Hmm, what to say?

I have terrible spelling, always have, since back when I was 10, reading at a 16 year old level and spelling at a 7 year old level. I'm improving, slowly. Punctuation, on the other hand, is slightly above average.

Crystalhall was actually a collaboration by seven transgender (no, keep reading, trust me) authors, writing a superhero round robin.

What they did was dream up a world- a world Marvel would be proud to call their own. Unlike Marvel or DC, they planned things out from the start. What powers can do. How they work. How they interact with society.

They figured out a way for mad scientists to be able to create such amazing inventions, yet not have those inventions able to be copied all over the world. They worked super powers into the history of their world, and the natural repercussions they had on history. They had a good reason for code names. They took the government into account.

The result is actually pretty awesome. There are about 11 authors there now, and they coordinate very well. Check it out if you want something to read- you won’t regret it. It updates weekly, and the whole universe weighs in at over a million words.

There are a hell of a lot of good fics out there that arn't on Fanfiction.net. Hell, I read dozens of good fics before I came to this site.

/ This is the single best fic, EVER. It's a Ranma story, though the latest arc, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, is a VERY good Sailor Moon Crossover. I cannot stress enough how good this guy is, even if you just skip to the last arc. Consistently exceptional writing, combined with an excelent plot. Change a few names, and the Author could have published this story professionally.

If there's one peeve I have with fanfiction in general, and crossovers in particular, it's the poorly understood phrase 'If you give Frodo a Lightsaber, you have to give Sauron a Deathstar'. Taken litterally, it makes no sense. But if you understand it, it's practically a bible for writing fanfction.

Stories revolve around conflict. Every story from a soap opera to a scifi, to a drama, to a mystery. Videogame, movie, TV show, book, comic, you name it. Stories need conflict, otherwise it's just hours of everyone hanging around doing nothing.

So fanfiction needs conflict too. Whether this is in the form of a great evil that needs defeating, or a natural disaster that needs surviving, or a romantic relationship, it still needs some conflict to drive the story.

But a lot of people forget this. They don't so much write, as masturbate. They take their favourite character, superpower them, and leave everything else the same. Then instead of a story about a hero who overcomes adversity, you've got a story about an unstopable god who solves every problem effortlessly. Which isn't much of a story, reading thousands of words of the author jerking off.

'If you give Frodo a Lightsaber, you have to give Sauron a Deathstar' means that, if you empower a hero, you need to empower the antagonist too, to give him something to struggle against.
