Poll: Should "An Odd Turn" attempt to stay faithful to canon, once its timeline hits that point? Or should it fully evolve into an AU, with canon being used only as a guideline and background support? Vote Now!

Author has written 1 story for RWBY. Huh, so I figure we just write stuff here? Sure... For all intents and purposes, my name is Orion Smith. Name I've had for quite some time... I am a White American Heterosexual Male who reads fanfiction of all sorts, from Harry Potter to Naruto to Highschool DxD to RWBY (hence the one currently in progress). Currently in college to get a degree in programming, I play mainly RPG video games, along with a number of shooters, and read various manga and anime (I need to get through that list...) My top anime/manga are: If you count it, RWBY; One Piece; The Gamer (Manwha, close enough); UQ Holder; Outlaw Star; Trigun; Nanatsu no Taizai; A bunch of others I'm too lazy to actually list. Current work in progress: An Odd Turn: Myself being your typical college male, I didn't expect some nonspecific deity to decide it'd be funny to drag me into the middle of the world of RWBY. Follow my story as I attempt to survive in a mostly hostile world with aid from the cast, while trying my damnedest to not be a Hunter! (Because generally actively seeking conflict tends to end with short life expectancy. I want to live!). So, recently, I've been asked for writing advice for stories. While flattered, understand that I barely have a clue of what I'm doing. Still, I can provide a little bit of help. For future reference instead of PMing me, unless it's specific questions, feel free to just use this. Some basic advice: Use proper punctuation and grammar, as stated. If a story's illegible, no one's going to read it. Also separate paragraphs cleanly. Unless you're writing a fight scene, everything put into one giant paragraph is difficult to read, so same reason as above. Also line breaks to signify a change in time or location that you don't feel like actually writing out. Personal preference, try to keep people saying things at the beginning or the end of a paragraph, to make it more clear who is doing so. Dialogue is actually really important, especially in our stories, so make it clear who says what. Try to match realism with fantasy. Yes, this is fanfiction. Yes, you can technically write characters to be gods among men who can do no wrong. Few people enjoy that though. All characters, either those you make or those you use from canon, are, in their worlds at least, human beings, with unique personalities and mannerisms. They also are not invincible. Take a look at DBZ: people who fight gods, right? More often than not though, they're on the receiving end of an asskicking before they can fight back. Try not to be significantly more powerful than canon characters either. True, it's a playground, but no point in breaking all the toys, right? Study some of the well-known writers. While I'm flattered that you think that mine is impressive, there are several of my own personal favorite authors. Along with the ones I have listed as favorites, there are also writers such as Saphroneth and TREBOR117. Study how they write, how they portray things in their own stories. Each person has a unique style, but the better ones tend to have some similarities, for ease of reading if nothing else. Finally, keep asking for advice and listening to criticism. Most people are willing to help if asked, and as you've probably seen if you've checked my reviews people will also leave criticism if they disagree with something. While it is your story, and thus you can blatantly ignore anyone saying how exactly you should write something (*cough*pairings*cough*) or if they disagree violently with something because they can't see it for themselves, many will leave advice or point out contradictions in your writing that you should pay attention to. Hope it helps! |
