Random facts about me: Name: Gamma Cavy here, Kes on Dragonfable. Gender: Female My stance on pairings and shipping: I'll read pretty much anything as long as its well written and there's an interesting story, but I can't write them myself. Don't ask me to give romance anything more that a side mention in my work. A little more about me: I have the unenviable ability to catch any disease that comes near me, which makes my writing time very spotty. Most recently It was pneumonia, which really sucked. I am an avid DragonFable player since before Nythera appeared, my profile pic is my DragonFable avatar, and I can usually be found there fighting side by side with one of my dragons: Veritas Violet-Wing, Tavimbria Azure-Eye, or Whereivas Silver-Crown. When I'm not there or here I'm watching Fullmetal Alchemist(2009 version), reading Pandora Hearts, drawing, or writing. I have three beloved pet guinea pigs, who purr at me often, and my all time favorite movie is Ratatouille. I am something of an artist, work with birds and goats, and love drawing dragons and birds. Pencil is my preferred medium, be it colored or normal, and I am of the opinion that people who use hard and soft pencils to draw with are over-complicating things, having gotten the same results with your basic pencil. Blanket statement regarding my writing policies: I will follow canon as closely as I can. If I find something that canon does not cover, I will make stuff up. If canon then refutes me, I will revise. Do not bother me with fanon; corrections require citations. If the author said it in an interview, but it doesn't directly connect to any event in the book, I will consider it. If an author has been self contradictory multiple times over many years, I will refer to whichever version of events suits the story I am writing at the time. If the correction requires owning volume ten of the supplemental material, and I do not, I will maintain consistency with what I have already written. Fanfiction is what literature might look like if it were reinvented from scratch after a nuclear apocalypse by a band of brilliant pop-culture junkies trapped in a sealed bunker. They don't do it for money. That's not what it's about. The writers write it and put it up online just for the satisfaction. They're fans, but they're not silent, couchbound consumers of media. The culture talks to them, and they talk back to the culture in its own language. Challenge: A Fullmetal Alchemist For-want-of-a-nail fanfic. The divergence point: be it luck, a lapse of judgement on Kimblee's part, or a dodge, Scar doesn't lose his arm. Scar's brother does not need to sacrifice his own to save his little brother's life. Scar and his brother survive that war, and the world takes a step sideways. Writing status: Broke both wrists. Ow. Not gonna write for a while. A word of warning: I'm a bad reviewer. I never really know what to say. I rarely review for that reason. In the event that I did, I was probably a whole lot more impressed by your story than the review was able to express. I try to give the kind of feedback I'd like to receive as a writer, I do not mean to criticism unnecessarily. If it's just an wordless fav/follow: I am deeply sorry. I know they drive me up the walls as a writer, because obviously that person thought something at least fleetingly nice about the story, but they are NOT TELLING ME! Feel free to poke me about them! It's easier for me to give feedback as part of a conversation. It's ticking me off. Hey, if I kill you, will it stop?" -Oz Vesalius Fanfiction Dictionary for Newbies AU - alternate universe. This basically means that it can't relate to the canon verse in anyway .eg highschool fics and vampire fics about stories that aren't already about highschool or vampires etc (ie not Twilight :P) If this helped you and you want to help out the innocent newcomers to fanfiction, copy and paste this to your profile and add the name to this list: storm-of-insanity, Gamma Cavy my deviant art account can be found by searching for "gammacavy. deviantart .com," with illustrations for my own work, and I will take requests for an illustration on your fics. In other words, a character crossplant is not a crossover. A boy raised in the ninja world called Harry Potter who’s not involved with Hogwarts, Britain, Voldemort, etc. is called an OC. Just because you call a random LotR elf ‘Harry’ does not mean it’s Harry Potter or a crossover. Call this the ‘if it looks like a duck’ principle. If it looks like a ninja, acts like a ninja, talks like a ninja, was raised like a ninja, and never had contact with magic or the magical world, it’s likely a ninja, not a wizard. 2. Share the pain, share the glory. Anakin Skywalker is the one Chosen to bring balance to the Force. Taking down Voldemort is Harry’s job. Even if it’s a HP/Star Wars crossover, and you think Anakin owns Harry, they are both leads and heros. Respect that, instead of flipping Harry the literary middle finger, and the crossover’s chances of being a success instead of auto-fail drastically improve. It’s one thing to expand a hero’s duty to encompass another universe; gloryhounding in favor of your preferred lead is an entirely different animal. Corollary: Reincarnation-style crossovers can avoid this issue entirely, but only if done well and carefully. If Harry’s the reincarnation of Namikaze Minato, something of Harry must remain – he must still use magic, still interact with the wizarding world/Harry’s friends, etc. – or you have ventured into the land of lead-replacement, another auto-fail. The only exception is when you are writing a humor story, and even then you should tread carefully. 3. A crossed universe must be internally consistent. This consistency will usually come at the price of an altered canon, with alterations varying from minimal to great. Wait, Merlin was an Ancient? That’s kinda neat, but not HP-canon relevant, unless the story in question involves Harry being a squib with the Ancients gifts. On the other hand, if the crossed universe involves Harry being a son of Sparda, then post-GoF canon is by necessity blown out of the water. One, because devils and demons will be a known if uncommon threat, and two, because the potential consequences of Voldemort’s rebirth are positively hellacious. Handwaving this is almost certainly auto-fail. 4. Good and evil are subjective. As easy as it is to draw lines in the sand, the Good Guys of respective universes are not always going to agree on what Good is. Buffy and the Scoobies kill supernatural stuff. Wizards are usually Ok, but anything they see as a demon is fair game. House elves, for instance. Or centaurs, or dragons, or some of Hagrid's creatures. Even more importantly, megalomaniacs out to enslave the world don’t usually team up. Use each other, yes. And even a megalomaniac out to enslave the world may find himself fighting with the forces of Good against a megalomaniac out to destroy it utterly. For a skilled writer, this can be very fertile ground. Very, very difficult to pull off realistically, yes, but to do so would likely transcend the bounds of epic storytelling. |
