Hi everyone! Some of you may know me from various fandoms. Hey to everyone from TUA and those folks at 's BB. :) You know who you are!
About my really long favs list: No, I don't have a limit. Favs list is how I keep track of updating fanfics. Essentially, it is also my recommends list. If you can't find something on there you like from the included fandoms, either you are picky in a very different way than I am or only like romance. Favs lists are about the only way look for new fics anymore, and I generally only read stuff I find on the lists of other authors I admire. This is particularly true of fandoms I have been reading a long time in.
Since I've gathered far too many fics in different areas that I can't say I have a top favorite fic, I'll list the some of most notable from a few various fandoms and genres, first few being the ones that are most above average. Be ready for a little bit of gushing over the first few fics. Just thinking about how awesome they are makes me want to start pounding away at the keyboard myself. XD
Underdark, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (new series) fanfic by Nekotsuki.
Character focus(es): Michelangelo, Leonardo
Genres: Drama, Family
Status: Complete
Length: About 40k
It has the perfect storm of everything I look for in a fanfic: Strong, strong writing with an excellent voice and great flow, spot-on characterization, fits seamlessly with canon (which is generally a must unless it's one of those go back in time or "what if" fics), and lastly a sense of buoyancy, ie, humor, (character-appropriate) that runs right along with drama and tension. Even my friend, who is as picky as all get out on writing style and plot quality, liked this one. A good ol' romp in the sewers with both the action and the emotion hitting all the right notes.
Til You Feel It All Around You, a One Piece fanfic by Tonko.
Character focus(es): Like...all the Strawhats, pretty much...
Genres: Friendship, Angst
Status: Complete
Length: About 60k
This fic is just well done, and the summary doesn't do it 1/64th of the justice it deserves. Takes the "X characters are turned into children, other cast members have to look after them" stereotypical fanfic plot and turns it on its head. It blows most of those pieces, which are just fluff, out of the water. Excellent character introspection and a really thoughtful piece (and if you can't believe such a plot could yield something of significance, better read this and find out why that belief is so wrong.) This fic is much more than just another adventure on just another island. It is highly engaging emotionally, crafted with great love for One Piece, and extremely memorable. This is a rare gem of fanfiction.
Absence, a One Piece fanfic by Elin B
Character focus: Luffy, Usopp... everyone.
Genre: Angst (Personally I would also add the genre "Family")
Status: Complete
Length About 115k
Post-timeskip AU. Another deeply thought-provoking piece (how is it this fandom has so many incredibly talented authors!?) as well as one that I have never read anything else like in any fandom, and doubt I ever will in this or any other. Yes, this is a death-fic—or, as the author states may be more fitting, a "grief-fic"—and is the most stunning, incredible tribute to the character who dies that I have read to date. What make this special in my heart is that it's not just about the death, it's about the life. It closely examines both the character's importance to the whole crew, as well as their relationship with every other member. Some characters may get a little more love than others, but everyone has a part. Yes, it will likely make you cry, but it is done with such love for the characters that I urge readers not to skip it if they think they can at all bear it (but do read this when you have a space of time and privacy to grieve along with everyone in the story, and just remind yourself that this isn't what actually happened in canon!) Given that the author herself said this scenario was difficult to take all the way to the end, the sheer detail and obvious dedication in this work is truly noteworthy.
Mistake, a Naruto fanfic by riversrunthroughme.
Character focus: Neji
Genres: Drama, Angst
Status: Complete (With complete sequel and incomplete not-really-sequel which is also recommended.)
Length About 4k
This author is just awesome. I'd recommend reading anything she writes, completed or no. The drama, oh the drama and lovely breathing characters. Her descriptions are rich and in this fic, the subtleties of the execution are really great. This author takes the Narutoverse and makes it gritty, with ninja actually being like real ninja. (Consider yourself warned.) As one reviewer pointed out: "This is the Real World of Narutoverse" And another: "This is brilliantly haunting and so painful in what you don't say, as well as what you do."
Regret Not A Thing, a Naruto fanfic by Mizerable.
Character focus(es): Sasuke, Naruto, and various others.
Genres: Drama, Angst
Status: Incomplete as of February 2011, no updates in the past year and a half (but very, very close to the end. Writer has been consumed with RL and a block. I warn that the story at this point is a cliffhanger, but I still recommended as one of my fave AUs for all the other things the story gets so right.)
Length: About 115k
Another intense one which takes the story of Naruto pre-Shippūden and beginning of Shippūden and reworks it in to something epic and intense--very intense. Again, consider yourself warned. Contains a BeingRedeemed!Sasuke, who is hardly as hate-able as cannon Sasuke. A nice rework of the Shippūden storyline into something which actually uses the Naruto characters well.
The Dark Lords of Nerima, a crossover with Ranma 1/2 and Sailor Moon by claymade.
Character focus(es): Ryouga, various others, Beneda (Youma OC. It's not bad--promise!!)
Genres: Adventure, Humor
Status: Nearly complete as of February 2011.
Length: About 237k
Crossovers are not to be taken lightly or done on a whim. There can be a lot of universe meshing problems and inconsistencies, which is probably why I have long perceived them as a rather gimmicky form of fanfic. However, when they are done well they are positively epic, just like this one (and some others which can be seen in my faves), and bear further examination, even by those who don't know one of the fandoms too well (like me, I knew almost nothing about Ranma 1/2 before I got into this!) Claymade handles the complications beautifully, and the almost startling amount of fight scenes managed to keep my interest.
Pranks a Lot, a Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series fic by Ryan Phelan.
Character focus(es): Mallory, Nosedive, Duke
Genre: Humor
Status: Complete
Length: About 2k
This guy does a lot of great little comedies for many fandoms, and this fic is no exception. He plays with the characters very well here in this under-appreciated fandom.
Nar, a Star Trek: 2009 fic by Miranda River.
Character focus(es): Spock, Uhura, some Kirk, Sybok
Genres: Romance, Sci-Fi
Status: Incomplete as of February 2011, last update eight months ago. Ending seems close-ish but pace of new chapters has greatly slowed.
Length: About 92k
For those who like romance, particularly the new movie's Spock/Uhura pairing. I don't do romance much but this one is too well-written to pass up. Explores the tension in their relationship and how that is resolved against a backdrop of human/Vulcan racial hostility and misunderstanding. Three words (or is it four?): Evil AU Sybok. Intense.
The Stargazer, a Star Trek: Original Series fic by Westel.
Character focus(es): Spock, Kirk, some Scotty, Jaresh (OC)
Genres: Adventure, Friendship
Status: Complete
Length: About 33k
There is something different about this one. Although the writing is not as strong as the others up here, there's something about the loving care with which the culture and characters of the new planet has been crafted which I like. The bad guy here is tough to figure out, but makes perfect sense once explained. Clever.
Development/consideration:
Head to Wind and White Horses: OP, Sanji-centric, adventure
The Psychology of a Shattered Mind
(The smell of clean salt has gone from his skin, a smell that was there when he lived free.)
One Piece; angst/H/C/Nakamaship Usopp-centric. While this began as a rather dark one-shot, I've been working at the continuation.
Extended Hiatus/Discontinued:
すずらん: Lily of the Valley
(When there is blood on your hands, when there is betrayal in your heart, and when home is only a place in your memory, can anything change that? Rock Lee is a traitor. This is where everything goes wrong.)
Village of a Thousand Bloodlines:
Tales
(In a village of purebreds, the common ninja is unnecessary.)
Naruto also. The concept of the fic is perhaps of more interest to me than the writing of it. This is basically based on something I came up with talking to my sister. We developed ours for an already AU Naruto world, whereas I am going to attempt to make this fairly streamlined with the most current info of the series. The village is based on the complete opposite situation of Mist, as it is a place striving to collect every bloodline they come across, having no "common" ninja on their forces. If I can ever get to it, the Uchiha, Hyuuga, Kaguya and Haku's clan will all have a feature, telling how they came to live in the village.
Proofreading/Completed (Because my work is never truly complete...):
Eggs Benedict (MD:TAS; comedy)
Let's Not Lose Our Heads (One Piece; comedy)
I would like constructive crit! CC will be saved to a file, praise appreciated, and flames, I don't know what you're talking about! Anyway.
You wanted to know about me? Oh, right.
Age: A question you shouldn't ask a lady.
Hair: Does it matter?
Eyes: Glasses. No, not literally.
Weight: What a rude question!
Preoccupation: One Piece, Mighty Ducks the animated series, Naruto, Xiaolin Showdown (why doth Scribbler not finish her awesome fics??), art (whoo for possible major?), languages, reading informative articles on (when they had them...), Digimon (once in awhile,) and fun anime like Fancy Lala.
I do not write porny romance, and am not particularly interested in reading it, particularly when the pairing is OOC for no good reason. In general, I don't read romance too often anyway. I like plain-old friendships a whole lot better, and believe it's high time to fill the world with awesome gen in which people aren't pairing off right and left for the sake of doing so. Yay forever friends!
