Author has written 2 stories for Harry Potter. Hi, EmmSea (or MC, or MarkC) here, I'm a middle aged Australian male. I spend at least 3 weeks a month on the road, and usually make over 75 flights a year, all over Oz. I discovered Harry Potter fan fiction a few years back and, with the amount of time I spend in terminals or on planes, it's been a lifesaver! I tend to read on an Android tablet, which is not the best way, but works in seat 27C on a Qantas B737. Also, being based in Brisbane, I get to cover regional Qld. Imagine a 6hr drive, for a 30min service call, then you get to drive back to home base. Radio out there ain't the best, and when I get sick of music, I fall back to Talking Books. I have the entire HP series, unabridged, read by Stephen Fry. Marvellous! Well worth taking along on a long drive. Spending so much time away, makes checking my Private Massages a bit problematic. I usually only get to check them on weekends. So, be a bit patient eh? Harry's pairings... I strongly favour Hermione or Luna pairings, Hermione 'cos it seems right, Luna for her off the wall outlook on life. I've also read a couple of stories with a Daphne pairing that, with her acerbic wit, seemed to work well. I dislike Ginny pairings, I see Ginny as either a simpering fan-girl, or a manipulative clone of her mother. I don't read Ginny pairing stories. I'm not really into harem stories, I think most are over the top -- hang on, witches, wizards and goblins isn't already over the top! I have read a couple of Harry/Hermione/Luna triads that, I thought, worked well. I think the uptight Hermione vs the mellow Luna differences work well. Other characters... Ron Weasley. I see as a lazy, greedy boy, who always takes the easy way out. I suspect he could be a modern Wormtail, I've seen him written that way and it works for me. Molly Weasley. Another greedy person, a manipulator with a propensity to force her wants with potions. I'm so glad she wasn't my mother :-) Spelling... Firstly a gripe. The HP universe is set in the United Kingdom, and the vast majority of the HP participants come from the UK or Ireland. So Harry doesn't kick Draco's 'ass', he kicks his arse. Also cars have boots not 'trunks' and they're filled with petrol not 'gas'. And maybe my biggest peeve, the school year starts in autumn, not 'fall'. There are a multitude of American-British converters/dictionaries on line ... (hint, hint). For myself, I'm Australian, as part of the Commonwealth, our spelling and grammar for the large part follows the 'Mother Country' i.e. it follows the UK. So, don't be writing telling me I've misspelt words if I use Australian/UK English in an upload, colour for 'color', and favour for 'favor' spring to mind. Thank you to all the authors who have given me so much enjoyment. MarkC Jan 2017 |
