Poll: Should I break Harry Potter: Junior Inquisitor into separate books? Vote Now! |
![]() Author has written 34 stories for Harry Potter, and Pokémon. So, here we have a profile page. Many people seem to use these as places to put stories about blokes on motorbikes that don't have breaks giving his helmet to his girlfriend so she doesn't die when he crashes into a wall to stop the bike as an example of true love or stories about a girl who avoided getting raped while taking a short cut home through a dark alley because she wore a crucifix and this is proof of God or stories about how there was a toddler who was buried alive in the 1930's and if you don't copy and paste that story into your profile her ghost will visit you tonight to tear out and eat your eyes and heart. I'm not going to be posting any of those things because I an not an idiot. The guy on the motorbike should stop accelerating and allow the bike to come to a stop on its own (particularly doable if he finds a hill and goes up it!) The girl who went down the alleyway usually finds out she avoided being raped because someone else who went down the alleyway ten minutes later was and if this is how you prove your God's existence then I don't think that that particular God is worth believing in (because he/she sure as f*ck ain't merciful!) and the ghost girl is just born out of people watching too many supernatural horror films. So instead I am going to use this space to talk about things that I am a fan of. Because a fan fiction website like this one seems to be the ideal place to do that sort of thing. Who'd a thunk? Harry Potter Okay, so this is my bread and butter. This is my primary reason for being here. Most of the fan fiction that I write is centred on this series and most of the fan fiction that I read is also centred on this series. Personally, I think that it is a great series, awe-inspiring, imaginative and deeply engrossing. The sandbox that is the Wizarding World is immensely fun to play in, however there are more than a few large-scale issues with the series. Love and the examples of it within the series can be a section all of its own. For now, here are, what in my opinion are, the top ten biggest things that the books could have addressed better or added in. 1) Harry's Unexplored Friendship with the Rest of the Quidditch Team. Okay, so Harry seems to get on reasonably well with Oliver Wood and has a decent friendship with the Weasley Twins, but what about the girls? Harry has a few issues with Angelina during his fifth year but beyond that, the dynamic between Harry and the girls is never really explored. You would think that being team mates would mean that Harry knows them quite well, but he doesn't appear to. Alicia is probably one of the least developed characters in the series while Harry and Angelina only appear to be on somewhat mildly friendly terms. As for Katie, until the sixth book came out, I don't think anyone would have suggested that she and Harry are friends. Personally, I have never found anything to suggest that Harry and Katie have ever spoken to each other. In fact, until the sixth book I don't think it is mentioned that Katie is only in the year above Harry. Before that I think everyone thought Katie was in the same year and Fred, George, Lee, Angelina and Alicia, but she's actually in Cho's year. The implications of Katie's age is actually quite important - Harry's first Quidditch Game for Gryffindor was also Katie's first time playing for the house. It would have been nice to see some kind of bond forming there. I'm not saying that she had to come on any of Harry's adventures, it's just a shame that Harry wasn't closer to his team mates. It might also have added a bit more gravity to her getting cursed in book six. 2) No Hufflepuff Allies. Alright, so Ernie, Justin, Susan, Hannah and Zacharias all join the DA. That's about as far as that goes. Yes, Harry did come to consider Cedric a friend, but that ultimately went nowhere. While Ravenclaw was represented by Luna, and to a lesser extent Cho, Hufflepuff house was left sorely lacking in developed characters, and let's face it, Harry really could have used an ally or two in the Badger's sett. 3) No Slytherin Allies. Snape, Slughorn and Narcissa are their own issue. During Harry's time at Hogwarts there are no good Slytherin students (or at least none that we know the names of). Harry really thinks that Draco is up to something in his sixth year. Approaching an agreeable Slytherin for information could have been an excellent plot line, especially when you consider that Harry did not trust Snape to stop Draco. As with the Hufflepuffs and the Quidditch Team, this is another example of untapped potential. 4) No Revival of the DA During Harry's Sixth Year So Harry thinks Draco is up to something. He tells Ron and Hermione but they more or less dismiss him. He tells Dumbledore who fobs him off with platitudes. Then what? What about the rest of the DA? Surely after the Battle of the Department of Mysteries Harry would have trusted Neville, Luna and Ginny enough to voice his suspicions to them if none of the others. You'd think at the very least that after Katie got cursed Harry would have used his valuable network to put out an alert, but no. Harry's obsession with what Draco is up to is not waylaid by Ron, Hermione and Dumbledore's dismissal of his concerns, so why then does not go to at least some of the others? 5) Hermione's Lacking Background. Despite being one of the main characters of the series (and arguably the books' primary heroine) Hermione's home life is next to non-existent within the narrative. We are not told where she grew up. We are not told whether she had a future career in mind before finding out she is a witch. We're not even told what her parents' first names are. Even with all this stuff coming out on Pottermore, we still don't know Hermione's parents names. We now know that Luna's deceased mother was called Pandora. We know that the Weasley siblings' paternal grandparents are Spetimus and Cedrella. We know the first names of both of Tonks' parents. We know Fleur's mother's name. We know Remus Lupin's parents were Lyall and Hope. But Hermione's parents don't warrant first names. And while we're on the subject of missing information... 6) No Birthdays for the Girls. So while the dates of birth for Hermione, Ginny and Luna have all since been revealed (19th September, 11th August and 13th Februrary respectively) not once are any of these birthdays mentioned in the books. Harry, Ron and Neville all have their dates of birth mentioned, but for some reason the girls' birthdays were unimportant. Even Hermione's. You'd think Ginny's would have warranted a mention in the fifth book as it happened the day before Harry's trial at the Ministry, but no. 7) No One Questions Dumbledore So according to J. K. Rowling, a big part of the books is about questioning authority. It is about not believing everything you are told at face value. When it comes to the authority of the Ministry, yes, questions are asked. When it comes to what the newspapers tell you, people come to not believe all of it. Yet when it comes to Dumbledore, there is a disturbing lack of questioning of him and his actions, and a disturbing amount of believing everything he says, especially when the people involved are Harry, Hermione, the Weasleys, Lupin, Hagrid or McGonagall. "Because he's Dumbledore!" 8) The Ineffectiveness of The Order of the Phoenix Let's face it, for the most part, The Order sucks. So much about them is questionable, from their members, their actions and their motives to their ability (or lack thereof) to come up with a decent plan or to do anything productive. Once Dumbledore dies, the organisation largely falls apart, so it can't have been that well organised in the first place. They fail in protecting Harry before his fifth year. They pretty much fail to guard the prophesy. They capture no one at The Battle of the Astronomy Tower. They all go into hiding once Voldemort takes over the Ministry and, let's be honest, that whole Seven Potters thing was one of the worst ideas in the long, sad history of terrible wizard's ideas. 9) Snape's Questionable Usefulness as a Spy. I could dedicate an entire section of my profile to Snape and my doubts about him, but for now let's just go with this. Snape is a spy for Dumbledore within the Death Eater ranks, that much is made clear. However, Snape's reports seem to be nothing more than "The Dark Lord is in a bad mood and is plotting how to kill Potter." - which, I'm fairly certain, no one needed explaining to them. As for the rest of Snape's spy work, there is nothing. Bridges collapse, giants rampage in muggle areas, werewolves attack kids, Ollivander and Fortescue are kidnapped from their shops, Emmeline Vance is killed on guard duty, Amelia Bones is murdered in her own home and from Snape there is nothing. From this we learn that one of these three things is true: 1) Voldemort doesn't actually trust Snape enough to let him know valuable information. 2) Snape knows this information but chooses not to pass it on. 3) Snape knew this information and told Dumbledore, who decided to not do anything. No matter which one is right, Snape's worth as a spy is called into question. 10) The Defence Professor Issue. You would think, would you not, that by the fourth book, after having dealt with Quirrell, Lockhart and Lupin, that Harry would have developed a reasonable amount of... wariness when it comes to the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor. Most kids would surely wonder what was going on had they gone through what Harry went through with regards to the Defence Professors, and would maintain at least a certain amount of caution around Moody. But Harry never seems to pick up on that fact. A Canon(-ish) Class List So anyone who reads my work may remember me stating once that I was working on an extensive project to record all the students at Hogwarts during Harry's time there and create notes about each of them with basic details such as parent names, date of birth, hometown, patronus form and the like for use in my stories. While that project is far from complete, I have successfully compiled a (somewhat) canonical list of all the students who were at Hogwarts during Harry's years there. What follows is a list of names, by house and year-group, of all those students, so that anyone else can use them. As far as I am aware, this list contains no made-up names, though parts of names might have been made up to allow me to fill in some blanks (for example, Katie Bell's friend Leanne is a canon character but her last name is never revealed, so I gave her one here) - also in some cases the house and the year of a student may be entirely made up by me as it is not given in canon. This list comes from a variety of sources, including the books, Pottermore, the films, the films' "making of" books, and the video games (mostly the game for Half-Blood Prince) Enjoy and feel free to use! Not available Girls: Not available Note 1: The reason there are no names for those students who were seventh year when Harry was in his first year, or those students who started Hogwarts during Harry's seventh year is because these names, as far as I can tell, don't exist anywhere. There isn't even a reference to who is Head Boy and Head Girl in Harry's first year. Note 2: Despite the idea commonly appearing in the fandom, Nymphadora Tonks was NOT a seventh year student when Harry first started Hogwarts. When we first meet her, she states that she has been an Auror for a year and had to do three years training before that. As we first meet her at the start of Order of the Phoenix, her first year as a qualified Auror matches up with the events of Goblet of Fire, while her three years of training happened during the events of Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban. This means she left Hogwarts a couple of months before Harry started. (Incidentally this puts her in the same year as Charlie Weasley.) |
