A story I would like to share, from your fellow fan fiction author JadeCrispy

I have an autistic brother. I never really noticed him much, mainly because he spends most of his time on the iPad or on his videos. He only watches certain videos. He also repeats the same scenes over and over. He tends to get angry easily and doesn't talk much. I didn't show much care for him, but I knew what autism was. I have told many people I have an autistic brother when I am asked to share if I know someone with disabilities. I prayed to god one day I will have the qualities to take care of my older brother because I know I will have to take care of him someday. I am not sure if my other older brother and my sister will help, but I know I will have to step in.

Today, during my catechism class in church, my teacher was taking about how life was precious, even the disabled ones. I then decided to share my story of my own autistic brother. Mainly, my mother's. I told my teacher and everyone in my class on how when my mom found out about my older brother being autistic, she got into depression. Then she met her primary badminton teacher who told her to get up and be strong. She also told her god will find a way for her. Then, my mom did get up and decided to find help groups for parents with autistic children in Malaysia. She found out there wasn't any help group so she decided to make one of her own. She and a few parents got together to help settle each others problems. My brother then was very troublesome. He got angry very easily, was very violent and could barely do anything. My autistic brother couldn't even use his fingers properly. He also has a craving for coke, so much that he would get up and take other people's coke. It was very stressing for my mom. But she went on anyway. Her help group got bigger and bigger, so big that my mom had to stay up late to finish her work. She even wrote newspaper articles with a friend to spread awareness about autism.

Soon, my mom and the family had to move to another country. There, she tried to find another help group but couldn't find any. So she started her own group yet again but this time online. It was yet again a huge group eventually. My mom also became a volunteer for a preschool for autism. Somehow, that autism centre got involved into a new autism school and my mom helped out. A new autism school was born and my mom continuously helped them with events. She even started an annual event with a few other volunteers for the school. What have I been doing? I was going to my own school, not helping my brother because I thought he was fine. Besides, I had to deal with my own problems, I was being bullied in school. Badly. But when I am with my brother, when he gets angry, I run away for fear of my own safety. I also sometimes scold him when he does the wrong thing.

My mom then helped another school set up and my brother slowly got better in his diagnosis. My brother could now do things by himself like changing or bathing. My father had to stay in Malaysia but he comes back to the country we live in every weekend to spend time with me and my two older brothers. Then my sister was born. She was just a baby then. My dad helps my brother with his disability by making him swim and cycle a lot. I always join them but I sometimes feel uncomfortable when my brother is around. My mom was also developing a system to help people like my brother get used to daily routines. It helps a lot of people. Then she realised it was too much work and went back to volunteer work by organising events. Soon, we had to move back to Malaysia again and my mom shut down the online group because she couldn't run it anymore.

Now, my mom is a volunteer for special need children, helping out centres and doing many things. She also gives talks to parents with autistic children. She is a role model in my opinion. How about my autistic brother. He is 19 this year, able to do normal routines by himself, can swim and cycle, and he is working in my father's office. His fingers work so well now that he can finish folding simple boxes in five minutes, which was really fast. My parents were surprised by this. My brother, from a huge mess into a normal person. He still can't talk and needs a lot of help but he can do things by himself.

When I finished telling my story, something overcome me. I started… to cry. I tried to smile it away at first but then I couldn't stop. I hid my face with my textbook and cried out. The thing was, I didn't even know why I was crying. My teacher noticed this and told me it was a beautiful sharing,t hat's when I let myself cry. A few of my classmates were concerned and hugged me or offered me a tissue. I really had no idea why I was crying so much but I was. After that class, I walked out and asked my father why I cried when I told the story, only to find myself crying again.

My father then told me I was getting mature. I was already mature for my age thanks to my bullying past but my father was telling me I was getting more mature. That I finally realised how hard it actually was for those disabled people. He said it was natural for me to cry, even he wanted to cry sometimes but stood strong. I thought of mom and dad how they went though all of this and cried even more. Then I said " What have I done all these years?" Nothing. I practically ignored him, no mater how much I tried to be nice to my brother. Then I asked my father if I have to take care of my brother when I grow up. My father assured me he and my mother will work on something and have saved enough money so that my brother can get through life. He also said it was nice of me to step in and help my brother if we all grow up. I kept crying, today was the same day I made a prayer to my god to have the qualities to take care of my brother. Looks like god answered my prayers.

When I got home, I said hello to my autistic brother and gave him a hug. He was emotionless but my father said he would have been happy. I would try and help mom and dad with my brother now. I know well enough. I love you mom, I love you dad, I love you my brother.
