Author has written 3 stories for Harry Potter, Valkyrie Profile, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I'm a 30 year old would-be writer who is thankfully blessed with both full time work and a bit of free time (blargh, where did THAT go?) to play around with. I mostly read Stargate SG1/Atlantis, Star Wars, and Harry Potter stories, and am very fond of crossovers (and now Dragon Age, courtesy of Isabeau of Greenlea and Arsinoe de Blassenville). I'm also planning to write some stories of my own to improve my writing skills- specifically dialogue and planning out longer (ie novel-length) stories- in preparation for writing my own original works. My first story here is a Harry Potter story that will play it fairly close to canon, at least in the beginning. I find that some of the most interesting stories are those that make just a couple of minor changes that in turn alter things more and more as time goes on- the butterfly effect, if you will. It will start with 1st year, and extend at least through 5th year. I have a general idea of my planned pairing, and I don't have any intention of 'bashing' any characters. I'm going to try to keep everyone's personality true to canon, though changes from how things happen in the books will obviously affect the characters' reactions and perceptions. Specifically, there won't be any Weasley/Dumbledore bashing, Dumbledore is not going to be a 'chess player' (though he will likely wind up being a bit more manipulative than canon Dumbledore, due to how the story plays out). Likewise, Draco isn't going to suddenly be a 'closet nice guy', as canon is pretty clear that the apple didn't fall too far from the tree there, and Snape is still going to be a jerk. I like reading well-written super!Harry stories, and will probably end up writing something to that effect at some point, but Correspondence Uninterrupted will not be that story. Harry will end up being more competent than canon!Harry, but he's not going to be able to conjure a battleship over Voldemort's head or anything. Hmm... something to submit for one of those old 'ways for Voldemort to die' lists though, maybe? That said, the direction the plot will end up going will have Harry getting 'extras' to compensate for his lack of several dozen years immersed in the dark arts. He has to be 'equal' after all, doesn't he? Note that there are some things going on, and that will happen in the future, that will provide Harry a bit more 'oomph'- he's just not going to be the all-powerful, kick the crap out of Dumbledore and Voldemort at the same time sort of super powerful we see sometimes (not that there's anything wrong with that- those can be fun to read too!). As will be true in all of my stories, deviations in Harry's power beyond 'canon' Harry will have in-story rationales. He's not going to just randomly become 'super' or even just randomly stronger than canon Harry without good reason. Please note that I do not write slash or smut. I'd put the standard 'I'm not a homophobe' comment here, but the people who tend to see a non-slash writer and care to comment on that preference tend to likewise ignore such disclaimers, so, yeah. Most slash readers/writers seem more than happy to let those of us who are not into that sort of thing have our own space as long as we do the same, but there's always a couple folks spoiling for a fight. So, eh. As for smut, well, I doubt I'd have much talent at writing it, and to paraphrase my favorite writer, I would rather leave it to your imagination than try to write it and do so poorly. That said, Correspondence Uninterrupted is year 1, (EDIT Year 2 now!) so obviously it won't be an issue regardless. But, for future reference... Also, I'm an American, so I'm generally unfamiliar with most British slang and terminology. I try to mix in a bit where I can, but to be completely honest I wouldn't be surprised if half of what I use is used incorrectly. British readers are welcome to correct and/or mock me as they wish. But in case people might be wondering why my stories lack much Britishness, this would be why. That said, I'm also trying to avoid using American slang, too, at least in instances where I'm relatively sure it's American only, rather than shared. While I'm not a British writer (obviously) I do try to show respect to the story and its origin. If my characters start talking like Americans all of a sudden, well, it doesn't really do much for story immersion, does it? I do not have a beta reader at this time, so all of my stories are released 'as is'- that is to say, I'm doing my own proofreading, and am apt to miss things. Proofreading is evil. If you catch something, be it a continuity error, grammar error, or, well, anything, please feel free to let me know. Thanks! 9/4/14- I appear to still be alive. I've even written stuff! Lost job, new job, etc. etc. There's always something it seems, which means I need to try to make the time somehow, or this still will never get written. And I mean to keep my promise about not abandoning stories, even it sometimes takes me ages to put a few thousand more words up. 1/6/19- Happy New year, uh, five times or so. I live. It's going to take me some time to go back through everything I've written, find old notes, etc., but I will try to resume writing something. |
