Author has written 3 stories for Wheel of Time, and Mass Effect. Something about myself I am an engineer that likes reading and writing - go figure. I hadn't written much in the previous year or the year before that, having found a full-time job that was very time-consuming after I had graduated. After that, I had served in my country's army, and receiving training through something that is roughly called Reserve Officers School during the 2015. After that I found a new, less time-consuming job, and the writer's itch found me once more in my idle time. For those of you who are familiar with my single old story, Ta'veren, I have bad news. I have definitely abandoned that story. Reasons are many, but the most important one is that I had probably evolved away from Fantasy genre. I think it was obvious even within Ta'veren that I was heavily emphasizing science and tech. Ultimately, I realized that I didn't like the characters of the Wheel of Time at all. Everyone had a stick up their ass, and not a single one of them had the guts, grit or balls to say "Fuck 'em! Let's go break this society to hell and watch it burn!" Because that's the kind of characters that I had grown to like over the years. They are simple. And they get things done. In truth, I've found very few book characters that are like that. One is Takeshi Kovach from Richard Morgan's sci-fi novel "Altered Carbon" and its sequels. Another one is Arlen Bales from Peter V. Brett's Demon Cycle. Like I said - few of them I've found in the books. Or maybe I just didn't find the right book. But when you look at the movies, you get Harry Callahan, the Man With No Name (The Good, The Bad, The Ugly), you get John McClane and Jules Winnfield, and Sgt. Damien Scott from Strike Back. Now switch that into video games and the number of those characters just skyrockets. My favorite character from a video game? Don't know. Commander Shepard? Alex Mercer? Gordon Freeman? The list is huge. It is therefore that I've decided to spend some time writing about Commander Shepard. He is, after all, one of the most flexible characters out there. He is what you want him to be. He does decisions that you want him to do. So I wanted to write something that would be my vision of him. |
