ha ha ha yeah so I haven't updated for like ten million years, but during this incredible hiatus I've been better than togashi hopefully. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this story and where I want it to go, because in the past I used to write the first chapter of things and publish it without really thinking of the layout and where the story's headed, which is pretty shitty of me. I've come to the conclusion that I want to redo it and push it in a slightly different direction. I want sakamae's role to be a little more similar to leorio's, in which leorio represents the majority of us: unlikely creatures with a hundred trillion cells and dreams and jokes and libraries and hot air balloons and dancing and electricity; with four chambered hearts and opposable thumbs - I want sakamae to be relatable. I don't want her to be like the fierce rare bright sparks in gon's starving eyes or killua's smooth bone-white fingers, and certainly not something so starkly dank with vacuum-like-eyes that go round and round and round and round-

and because my style's really changed as well (its not 10000% obvious but I can feel it). I know I could do so much better (lmao I always get like this with writing sorry) and I'm not quite ready to drop this idea, especially not when hxh is on hiatus and its illumi's chance to go through metamorphosis and jesus I have so many opportunities with illumi in this.

also, on the other hand, I want to write a relationship that grows. it doesn't have to gleam or shine, I just want to write a relationship between illumi and someone so like us (and each other) that isn't noxiously poisonous and doesn't romanticise bad things bc dating an ass-assassin is tough lol.

idk tbh, I think people are either going to love it or hate it??? It's not something to be taken seriously - there's no real, I guess, in-depth discussion of themes other than the pretty common ones in a naruto oc-'si' (it's not actually a self-insert, but it should be treated as one, considering she is reborn and yada yada). the point of THE KIDS AREN'T ALRIGHT is on naruto world building and character exploration (like kakashi, the hokages, uchihas). we're talking things like children running like cats (or cats running like children), the long night treading stars, cable television coils overhead in thick, twisting cords, a summer sun setting, how goldfishes look in ceramic tubs, dancing festival lights, the sand in between toes, draconian military clothing, 'your politics bore me', N A T I O N A L I S M imposed in school textbooks - throwing knives, stabbing, slicing, dissecting, cutting - how someone's eyes can gleam like a knife held up high under the sun.

and its in present tense so have fun and chill lol.

so... how to put this... it's taken a drastically different path from my original intention (a fun twisty-turny exploration of themes story) and into a mind of it's own. I'm not entirely sure where it's going to go, or how it's going to turn out, who dies, what changes, suiren's impact, but I know now that it's so much more than just something to take my mind off.

one piece; kid/OC (potentially the most developed lol). a well-esteemed surgeon who gets fucking high on surgery loses her medical license after a Noble dies during an open heart operation and slowly succumbs into a mess of a trainwreck. she flees to bank island and surprise! is caught in the middle of an open fire between DA KID PIRATES and idk pirates during a money run.

fun things about this one: her name is Lo as in Lolita and she dissected a majestic salmon successfully at the age of five. she comes from a whole family of surgeons (except her great-granddaddy, who's real famous and you'll find out why) and basically she's a trainwreck. expect shit like: shaking, scratching, rocking back and forth, staring up at people, kid's really awful backstory, the exploration of time, kid re-naming and rearranging each member that joins his crew, mythologies, islands of man-eating whale-sharks with gashing coral teeth; floating beluga whales with eyes that point towards the heavens (and whether that's up or down); seals with deer-antlers hunting majestic salmon; ghost birds that look like things crawled out of hades' mouth; fire-swallows with feathers that light on fire when dropped; selkie wolves, skeptic catfish, biding sturgeon and etc etc.

annnd most importantly, this is a story about rediscovery after being torn apart. it's a story about restitching. there's someone with rough, warm hands next to you and he guides your twitching hands as you heal yourself from head-to-toe, from age one to now. he's really bright and sometimes it scares you to think that he's here because it's him but he's here. it makes you happy. you haven't felt really happy in a long time.
