Cassandra chapter 34 . 7/11 I always like seeing the approaches that an author might have taken with a work instead of the approach they did take (and i love platforms that allow writers to post them). I quite liked the lemony narrator, but i’m reading in 2020, after he’s been revised, apparently (incidentally, i’ve always thought that Daniel Handler’s version was a bit heavy-handed, despite being the trope codifier—it is a very easy thing to over-do). My one nitpick (and i realize that i’m in the minority here) is that i didn’t care for the reveal that the narrator was post-apocalypse!Law all this time. It was a good concept, but i felt that it limited the narrator’s viewpoint in a way that didn’t mesh with the rest of story. Partly because the distinctive voice which i’d imagined for the narrator based on his wordiness and detached sense of humor didn’t really match Post-apocalyptic!Law’s voice as he’s presented in the story, but also because i’d gotten the impression by the end of chapter 32 that while Law was able to concede that Madelyn didn’t intend to be the monster she was, he also never really forgave her. So It doesn’t make sense to me that he would have shown the flashbacks to Madelyn/Blake’s life in our world (unless all flashbacks are happening entirely separate from the narration, which is possible). Again, this is just my own preference for keeping narrators omniscient and meta. All said, a very good read. |
Cassandra chapter 33 . 7/11 Stop making me feel things, Phalanx, I don’t like it. In all seriousness, though, i’m late to the party because i found this recently through its TV tropes page. Which means that i already had an idea of how it would end (my own fault for having already read several spoilers before deciding that i wanted to read it myself). Noneless, i found it a highly enjoyable read (my idea of a well-written work is one that compels you to keep reading, even though you already know what it’s about, and how it ends). I’ve never even read/watched One Piece before (seems good, just not my jam), but i felt this was excellent as a standalone deconstructive work. And now that i’ve read it, i think that my concept of what actually makes a Mary Sue vs. realistic character has been refined, as well. |
Cassandra chapter 31 . 7/11 Chapter 31: i suddenly have the urge to make some popcorn for that last section |
Cassandra chapter 29 . 7/10 Chapter 29: |
SnowingCrystals chapter 11 . 3/14 Damn, I really like Mar's parents, I hope they find her mother soon. |
SnowingCrystals chapter 10 . 3/14 Oh darn, poor mar. |
SnowingCrystals chapter 8 . 3/14 Poor strawhats. :( I guess that might be an explanation why the ship was trying to kill Mar, i probably thought she'd be like Luffy's 'twin' or worse. |
SnowingCrystals chapter 7 . 3/14 I love this. |
SnowingCrystals chapter 6 . 3/14 I actually like Mar, but that might because I don't like many of the other characters. |
SnowingCrystals chapter 4 . 3/14 I really love this. |
SnowingCrystals chapter 2 . 3/14 marie's parents, I feel so bad for them ouch. This is great, and I do like me a snarky narrator (as you said very lemony snicket, and I like that) |
SnowingCrystals chapter 1 . 3/14 This is amazing, I love it already. |
OnePieceDoesExist chapter 34 . 2/21 This was honestly one of the best fics I have read! You checked off every Mary Sue requirement, but one of your characters felt that way. Thank you so much for writing this! |
Guest chapter 30 . 2/17 WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT! (I'm sorry, but I don't think my brain can came up with anything comprehensible at the moment.) Mar's mom is madelyn? but how? when? How come I didn't know? But how is this possible? And why I am suddenly repeating everything I just wrote. Please give my brain a few seconds to process (WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT!) |
KeyDragon chapter 1 . 1/18 Ok so apparently you can only post 1 review per chapter so ima put this here. Ok so it's literally 4:30am and I just finished the re-read and I just. I don't really have any actual fully formed cohesive sentences that is't just me silently screaming at my wall and keyboard mashing but I did decide to generally dot down my thoughts throughout the chapters so: It’s a story about wish fulfilment (fuckin foreshadowed the end of the story in the first paragraph!) I used to 100% waaay more empathise with like early story mar. Straight up dropping real important hints about both timelines and shit in dialogue. (King of pirates, pirate queen etc) REALLY like how you can see in robins diary how MD Madeline affects people. And such an isolated outsider view which really shows how weird it is. Oof the graves is such a good good scene. It really starts to hit you that this is not going to be a nice story. Real punch in the gut kind of thing. Ok I’m fuckin dying that you managed to put a major plot point in a Star Wars meme dream. And on April fools day? Absolute master of diversion. Control see and control v is amazing. Also. Did you really name a vice admiral little bitch bc. Amazing. Hells yes for the reveal of actual power of logic logic fruit. Augh the reveal of Law is just godly. OMG the whole scene where Mar was knocked out and you were all “oh deus Ex machina etc etc” and didn’t end up explaining how it happened. AND IT WAS LAW USING HIS POWERS ! Amazing deflection I didn’t even realise at the time or think of it. I gotta say you manage to make literally any scene involving the graves or deaths of the straw hats just absolutely heart wrenching. Ayyyyyyyy Squall actually has some really interesting backstory! Ooooooohhhh nonononono. The death of chopper is so much worse than I remembered it being. Mrs Suesse being “not the daughter he knows”. Augh your wording is SO GOOD I’M OMG starting off the epilogue/ ch 33 with the same line as the beginning but then changing it ?! OMG RAYLEIGH AAAAAAA BC MAR CAN CONTROL REALITY SUE MADE IT SO LAW COULD REMEMBER HER Yeah so basically this was just as good, if not better, than I remember it being. Even 7 years after first reading it. Thankyou for this work which has stayed with me for basically my whole teens and into my adult life. It really means a lot. I hope you can still receive this after all this tine. You deserve all the praise I can give. (also still kind of holding out for that HP fic lol) |
