But particularly the people who do take the time to give me a comment, even if it's as short as "I want more," I appreciate you so much! You encourage me to keep doing what I love. About me: 24 years-old, engaged, and currently studying abroad in Japan. Majoring in Linguistics, minoring in Japanese. I like writing OC stories. There is just something about being able to inject a new character into a series that is just very exciting for me. I love designing that character to be flawed and as multi-faceted as possible, to give them room for growth and development through the course of the story. I want to write characters that represent real people. That's always a work in progress, and I'm always trying to improve on that front. I dislike the term Mary Sue. It is a literary criticism that is recurrently thrown at female characters that people dislike (you don't see male characters taking this criticism in the same proportion), and it is so vaguely defined that is completely unhelpful to any writer. Perhaps the intention is to say, "This character is poorly developed," but why not say that instead? I contend Mary Sue is disproportionately used far more against female characters and young female writers who honestly just want to have fun with their story. And if you want to help them improve because you see a spark of amazing creativity and potential in them, the least helpful thing you can do is say, "Your character is a Mary Sue." Announcements: Long time no see! I have been rather busy since coming to Japan, but I will be trying to be more active around here again. Expect updates to be starting up again. Upcoming
