Author has written 4 stories for Dragon Ball Z, and Harry Potter. Hi there... Well...a little about me... I was born on a cold sunday afternoon, my mother's water broke in church... oh... too early... uhm... Let's see... I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BA in Liberal Arts focused on writing with electronics and history influences. Long title... basically means I write mostly historical fiction and science fiction with historical influences (like peace treaties involving a marriage similar to medieval or renaissance times... set in the semi-near future where the "countries" involved are Earth and an alien race). My stories... Jamie Potter and the Arrogant Warlock's Curse -- fourth year finished, planing work on fifth year in progress - on hold while I work on Risen. People complain about the Lordships of Harry Potter giving him too much political power... I'm more interested in the other side of the equation... how does having all those Houses effect your personal life? Risen -- This is a bit darker in some aspects than JP&TAWC, a bit lighter in others, includes sex and other things (but not to the point of smut). I'm not giving as many author's notes on this one, though the research is still there and available if people want to ask about it. Honestly not sure how far this one will go... it's such a different writing style that planning and execution are odd at times... but it's coming along slowly for now. 3915 -- Not going to say much about this one yet... just an odd idea that popped into my head when reading a few "Don't Fear the Reaper" fics. -- Quick tips for writers -- I have a writing assignment for all of you writers and potential writers amongst us... Write your stories as normal... type it all up, as normal... then read it aloud (even if only in your head) so that you feel the breathing patterns... while this is only about 98% accurate try to take a pause on the commas for a quarter second, and a half second on periods. This will require multiple read throughs as you will want to read each sentence separately to allow you to hear the errors, before reading the entire paragraph to make sure the "narrator" and/or your characters can actually breathe... Hermione-like characters that can talk forever without breathing not-withstanding... Doing this will have several effects on your writing... 1 - as stated, it will make your characters feel more natural when speaking... and your descriptions will 'flow" better... 2 - you'll catch many more of your own errors as you read the lines back... normally writers have a devil of a time seeing their own errors as they tend to read what they expect to read (what they intended to write) rather than what is actually written. By focusing on breath control and looking at the commas and periods, you'll find yourself slowing down a bit as you read and will feel the errors you've made in your writing... not all of them, but more than you probably have in the past... 3 - you'll find that your normal speech patterns will shift a little to incorporate the slight pauses, making it easier for others to understand what you are saying... even when you talk really fast... Give it a shot. It's not like you'll be graded by anyone here... though your language professors might enjoy the change a bit. Writing tips... 1 - Make everything singular... "Hermione and I are going..." - "I am going" ... "Will you come with Hermione and me?" - "Will you come with me?" ... a lot of the time writers have a tendency to get confused on which version of the pronoun for oneself and get it wrong. Granted the local dialects and idioms will alter the dialogue to use the incorrect form, but the narrative should use pure grammar. 2 - Conjunctions or Your/You're and There/They're/Their - easy mode corrections! i - Write it out! It's easy to see there's something very wrong with this sentence... You are toolbox is over they are. by writing everything out the conjunction errors in words such as "they're" or "it's" are easy to find when you actually see them as "they are" or "it is/was" ... after the initial editing pass, go back and put the conjunctions in the dialogue... ii - Your and Their are possessive terms... if you can't tell what belongs to the character, then it's probably wrong somehow... Your toolbox... the toolbox is the possession being referred to as belonging to you. This one can be a bit tricky though as the belonging could be a reference to something in a different sentence, but often the word then shifts to theirs or them when referring to a group, or its', his, or hers for singular. iii - There is a location... drop the T... since Here is also a location, if the sentence makes sense, it's right... Your toolbox is over there. - Your toolbox is over here. And please remember to add the R to the end of Your... you toolbox is over there is just as wrong as you are toolbox... to/too/two... - two is a number... - too means "as well" or overly/extremely (-ie- "Too right!")... - to is a direction/action, though is often incomplete ("I wanted to [love you, [go to the show, [buy that dress]") by/buy/bye - bye is an absence or transfer (often used in sports) or a truncation of the term "Goodbye"... - buy is a verb for purchasing things... to buy = to purchase - by is agency... "X written by Z", "X given by Z to Y" -- by is also a relative distance... "they passed by each other" - "they passed near each other" Lightning/Lightening - Lightning is the natural phenomenon of charged particles - To lighten is to lessen... past/passed - past is time or distance - "it's in the past, leave it there" or "the ball went past her" - for a time try replacing the word with "now" or "future"... for a distance try "to" - passed is travel - "the world passed him by" - swap in "{has} gone by" and see if it still fits... It was PAST time she left or the time to catch the bus to school would have PASSED. past is fixed while passed can also be rewritten to active... "[Tommy] pass the ball!" - "Tommy passed the ball" The problem with English is it's not a Science but an Art... Two ships passed in the night; but in going past, failed to notice the warning signals so narrowly avoided colliding... Science - concrete, fixed rules (or laws) that always work - Grammar is a Science Art - fluid, mailable concepts that generally work - Language is an Art -- Other stuff... Favorite books... (there are many others that are good too... but I've actually reread most of these), Elizabeth Moon - Sheepfarmer's Daughter (Omnibus) - her new additions to that world are really good too, Current readings... Check out the favorite stories and authors listed below, typically I'll add the first story I like to my list and add the author if there is more than one story or a series from them that I like reading (or even re-reading). As you can probably guess I'm a voracious reader; my kindle has well over nine hundred e-files... I'd say e-books but some of them are sets of up to twenty books in one file so... yeah, there's that... plus all the physical books I read (my library covers over 200 square feet of wall space in my room), and all the stuff I read on line. On Fan-pairings... Preferred... Harry or FemHarry with Hermione, Daphne, Tonks, Susan, Luna (individually or in any combination thereof), Harry with Ahsoka and Aayla aren't bad either but I leave crossovers alone for the most part, FemHarry/Neville is somewhat interesting but I haven't really seen it written well yet, and if you haven't noticed... I don't really care for M/M much (though Sirius/Remus does work for some odd reason)... others on a case-by-case basis... Draco/Ginny or Draco/Astoria work surprisingly well... Rukia/Ichigo, Tatsuki/Orihime, Karin/Toshiro though it's been a while since I've read a good Bleach fic... Gohan/Videl, Vegeta/Bulma, Goku/ChiChi, Trunks/Juhachigou(18)... again... it's been a while since I read a good fic in this fandom... Disliked... almost to the point of revulsion... Harry, FemHarry, Hermione, or really anyone with Draco, Snape, Voldemort, Ron, Lucius, Barty, Albus, etc., etc. (it's just... no...)... Remus/Tonks (six years is one thing... thirteen is another), Harry/Ginny (fangirls *shudders*), Ron/Hermione (regardless of canon... even JKR said this was wrong)... Harry/Ginny sometimes works, and I even have a FemHarry/TomSr in my favorites, so it's not that the pairings can't work, but it's just so hard for me to believe that these pairings would actually work out in the end... You might check my other page... though I haven't written there for a while... https://www.fictionpress.info/~krysgriffin FictionPress.com is a spin off/sister site to FanFiction.net ... not sure if they automatically create accounts on both sites for new authors but they split my account when they started that site. A good rule of thumb for FanFiction that I've found is that stories that are less then a thousand words per chapter tend to be not very good, but there are some that are so don't discount them simply for that reason alone. Anyway... enjoy. Krys Griffin |
