My main ship is Harry/Hermione and now even JKR has admitted that Harry/Hermione makes more sense. www dot co dot uk slash tvshowbiz slash article - 2550453 slash JK - Rowling - admits - Hermione - married - Harry - Potter- instead - Ron dot html JKR has finally written something about the Potter Family on Pottermore, but it seems that she completely forgot about the Black Family Tree, so I am going to fix it. www dot. pottermore dot com slash writing-by-jk-rowling slash the-potter-family In all my future stories, this will be the background for the Potter Family: The Potter Family is a very old one, but it was never (until the birth of Harry James Potter) at the very forefront of wizarding history, contenting itself with a solid and comfortable existence in the backwaters. Potter is a not uncommon Muggle surname and the family did not make the so-called ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight’ for this reason; the anonymous compiler of that supposedly definitive list of pure-bloods suspected that they had sprung from what he considered to be tainted blood. The wizarding Potter family had illustrious beginnings, however, some of which were hinted at in Deathly Hallows. In the Muggle world ‘Potter’ is an occupational surname, meaning a man who creates pottery. The wizarding family of Potters descends from the twelfth-century wizard Linfred of Stinchcombe, a locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, ‘the Potterer’, became corrupted in time to ‘Potter’. Linfred was a vague and absent-minded fellow whose Muggle neighbors often called upon his medicinal services. None of them realized that Linfred’s wonderful cures for pox and ague were magical; they all thought him a harmless and loveable old chap, pottering about in his garden with all his funny plants. His reputation as a well-meaning eccentric served Linfred well, for behind closed doors he was able to continue the series of experiments that laid the foundation of the Potter family fortune. Historians credit Linfred as the originator of a number of remedies that evolved into potions still used to this day, including Skele-gro and Pepperup Potion. His sales of such cures to fellow witches and wizards enabled him to leave a significant pile of gold to each of his seven children upon his death. Linfred’s eldest son, Hardwin, married a beautiful young witch by the name of Iolanthe Peverell, who came from the village of Godric’s Hollow. She was the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell. In the absence of male heirs, she, the eldest of her generation, had inherited her grandfather’s Invisibility Cloak. It was, Iolanthe explained to Hardwin, a tradition in her family that the possession of this cloak remained a secret and her new husband respected her wishes. From this time on, the cloak was handed down to the eldest of each new generation. The Potters continued to marry their neighbors , occasionally Muggles, and to live in the West of England, for several generations, each one adding to the family coffers by their hard work and, it must be said, by that quiet brand of ingenuity that had characterized their forebear, Linfred. Occasionally a Potter made it all the way to London, and a member of the family has twice sat on the Wizengamot: Ralston Potter, who was a member from 1612-1625, and who was a great supporter of the Statute of Secrecy (as opposed to declaring war on the Muggles, as more militant members wished to do so) and Henry Potter (Harry to his intimates), who was a direct descendant of Hardwin and Iolanthe and served on the Wizengamot from 1913-1921. Henry caused a minor stir when he publicly condemned then Minster for Magic, Archer Evermond, who had forbidden the magical community to help Muggles waging the First World War. His outspokenness on behalf of the Muggle community was also a strong contributing factor in the family’s exclusion from the ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight’. Henry had two sons, Fleamont and Charlus. Fleamont, the eldest of the two, was so-called because it was the dying wish of Henry’s mother that he perpetuate her maiden name, which would otherwise die out. Fleamont bore the burden relatively well; indeed, he always attributed his dexterity at dueling to the number of times he had to fight people at Hogwarts after they had made fun of his name. It was Fleamont who took the family gold and quadrupled it, by creating magical Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion (‘two drops tames even the most bothersome barnet’). He sold the company at a vast profit when he retired, but no amount of riches could compensate him or his wife Euphemia for their childlessness. They had quite given up hope of a son or daughter when, to their shock and surprise, Euphemia found that she was pregnant and their beloved boy, James, was born. Charlus Potter initially worked for his brother’s business but joined the Aurors after World War II broke out. Unlike in World War I, where the magical community had stood aloof, World War II saw them dragged into it by the Nazi Reichmage, Gellert Grindelwald. By 1945 Charlus Potter was part of an International Auror Task Force assigned to hunt down and capture Grindelwald. But when the Task Force finally located Grindelwald’s hideout and stormed it, they found that Grindelwald had somehow already been subdued by Albus Dumbledore, at the time merely a Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts. While Dumbledore was publicly feted as a hero, many in the Aurors—especially Charlus and his fiancée and fellow Auror, Dorea Black, were suspicious of how a civilian schoolteacher had known where to find Grindelwald and why said schoolteacher would go into a warzone instead of passing along the information to the Aurors—suspicions that, when voiced, led to Charlus and Dorea being laid off, ostensibly as part of the post-war demobilization; but although they remained utterly convinced that some deeper conspiracy was at work, they never found evidence to support their claims. Charlus and Dorea married, returned to the family business and eventually had a son of their own, William Potter. Charlus and Dorea eventually died of Dragon Pox in 1977; their son William, who had followed in their footsteps and became an Auror, was slain in a battle by Death Eaters not long afterward. Fleamont and Euphemia lived long enough to see James marry a Muggle-born girl called Lily Evans, but not to meet their grandson, Harry. Dragon Pox carried them off within days of each other, due to their advanced age, and James Potter then inherited Ignotus Peverell’s Invisibility Cloak. For the anonymous guest reviewer of "Overworked Headmaster" who asked about money: I did not say that Harry and Elizabeth weren't independently wealthy. They are both independently wealthy on par with the Malfoy's. I thought I had already hinted as much with the fact that Karen doesn't have a job but is never needing for money even with two children to raise. The reason why she's being so conservative with money is partly because she comes from a less well-off background and partly because she doesn't want Harry and Elizabeth getting spoiled. However, although both families are wealthy, only the Black Family is old money. The Potter Family, as described in JKR's article on Pottermore, got their wealth by inventing and patenting potion recipes; as the actual inventing process would be a lot of work, that's why Harry describes his ancestors as earning their money "the hard way". Fleamont Potter quadrupled the family fortune by inventing Sleakeazy's Potion, which is why James didn't have to work. The Black Family, on the other hand, is old money and thus has not done any real work for a long time. Although Narcissa Malfoy is a cousin of Sirius, she's already received her inheritance and thus neither she nor Draco can make a claim to the rest of the family fortune (which, Elizabeth's deprecating descriptions not withstanding, is still considerable) as long as both Sirius and Elizabeth are alive; if they were to both die without issue, only then Narcissa Malfoy could lay claim to it. That section was just me poking fun at numerous fanon cliches which dial up Harry's wealth to absurd levels, without thinking through all the implications of it, and then doing nothing with 90% of it. All the excess properties that Harry gets routinely loaded down with in so many fanfics (and then most of it is never used) would also all have belonged to James. Realistically speaking, if James had really had a choice between remaining in Britain where there's a war going on...or moving to some place else where he just so happens to have another house, any sane parent would have left Britain and gone to the some place else. Especially if it's in a vacation spot like the Bahamas. Since James did remain in Britain, I am therefore assuming that the house he lived in was the only one his family has. For a certain anonymous guest reviewer of SOTE-ROTJ Redux who didn't have the nerve to login/register so that I could reply, you know who you are: Yes, I deleted it; there is no reason to approve a review containing such language, especially as you didn't talk about the story at all. Why did you write those things? What was it about my fic that led you to thinking that? I have a hunch, of course, that you are referring to the Luke/Mara pairing as I have heard that it has become a divisive topic in the fandom ever since Disney threw the old EU into the trash. But this is my fic and you knew from the summary that it was Luke/Mara, so why did you even bothering clicking on it? For anyone else who wonders, no, I have no interest in whatever horrors Disney has wrought with 'The Force Awakens' and 'Rogue One'; I haven't even watched them once. It isn't Star Wars without Mara Jade, Kyle Katarn, and Bria Tharen. |
