She ended up staying longer than planned, and had to walk home alone. She wasn't afraid because it was a small town and she lived only a few blocks away. As she walked along under the tall elm trees, Diane asked God to keep her safe from harm and danger. When she reached the alley, which was a short cut to her house, she decided to take it. However, halfway down the alley she noticed a man standing at the end as though he were waiting for her. She became uneasy and began to pray, asking for God's protection. Instantly a comforting feeling of quietness and security wrapped round her, she felt as though someone was walking with her. When she reached the end of the alley, she walked right past the man and arrived home safely. The following day, she read in the newspaper that a young girl had been raped in the same alley just twenty minutes after she had been there. Feeling overwhelmed by this tragedy and the fact that it could have been her, she began to weep. Thanking the Lord for her safety and to help this young woman, she decided to go to the police station. She felt she could recognize the man, so she told them her story. The police asked her if she would be willing to look at a lineup to see if she could identify him. She agreed and immediately pointed out the man she had seen in the alley the night before. When the man was told he had been identified, he immediately broke down and confessed. The officer thanked Diane for her bravery and asked if there was anything they could do for her. She asked if they would ask the man one question. Diane was curious as to why he had not attacked her. When the policeman asked him, he answered, "Because she wasn't alone. She had two tall men walking on either side of her." Amazingly, whether you believe or not, you're never alone. Did you know that 98 of teenagers will not stand up for God? Guy: Can you take off my helmet and put it on yourself? It's bothering me. In the newspaper, the next day, a motorcycle crashed into a building because of break failure. Two people were on it and only one survived. The truth was, that half way down the road the guy realized his breaks were out and he didn't want the girl to know. Instead, he had her hug him and tell him she loved him one last time. Then he had her put his helmet on so she would live even if it meant he would die. Boy: No The girl runs away in shock and pain and the boy runs after her and says: The reason you never cross my mind is because you're always on my mind. OBITUARY FOR THE LATE MR. COMMON SENSE Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and Maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get Parental consent to administer Calpol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing. A moment of silence. RIP We shall remember - Murphy's Laws of Warfare... Education is... One of the chief obstacles to intelligence and freedom of thought. Bertrand A. Russell (1872-1970) English philosopher, mathematician, and writer. The inculcation of the incomprehensible into the ignorant by the incompetent. Josiah Charles Stamp (1880-1941) British civil servant, industrialist, economist, statistician and banker. About education... Public schools are the nurseries of all vice and immorality. Henry Fielding (1707-1754) English novelist, dramatist. Education … has produced a vast population able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading. G. M. Trevelyan (1876-1962) British historian A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education he may steal the whole railroad. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) American president They say that we are better educated than our parents' generation. What they mean is that we go to school longer. They are not the same thing. Douglas Yates Men are born ignorant, not stupid; they are made stupid by education. Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English philosopher, mathematician and writer. It is little short of a miracle that modern methods of instruction have not already completely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry…. I believe that one could even deprive a healthy beast of prey of its voraciousness if one could force it with a whip to eat continuously whether it were hungry or not… Albert Einstein (1879-1955) U.S. physicist True education makes for inequality; the inequality of individuality, the inequality of success, the glorious inequality of talent, of genius. Felix E. Schelling (1858-1945) American educator Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly. Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-95) English biologist and writer. (they failed misarably, I do nothing except work in class and still get b's (a good 15% of the grade is based off of out of school work)) I am inclined to think that one's education has been in vain if one fails to learn that most schoolmasters are idiots. Hesketh Pearson (1887-1964) British biographer. I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. Mark Twain (1835-1910) American writer. Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught. Oscar Wilde (1856-1900) Irish poet and dramatist. Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality. Helen Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) English author, illustrator, mycologist and conservationist. The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men. It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense. A child educated only at school is an uneducated child. An educated person is one who has learned that information almost always turns out to be at best incomplete and very often false, misleading, fictitious, mendacious - just dead wrong. If I had learned education I would not have had time to learn anything else. If a man is a fool, you don't train him out of being a fool by sending him to university. You merely turn him into a trained fool, ten times more dangerous. With just enough learning to misquote. If the Romans had been obliged to learn Latin, they would never have found time to conquer the world. I prefer the company of peasants because they have not been educated sufficiently to reason incorrectly. Intelligence appears to be the thing that enables a man to get along without education. Education enables a man to get along without the use of his intelligence. You can get all A's and still flunk life. The one real object of education is to have a man in the condition of continually asking questions. Whatever is good to know is difficult to learn. I am still learning. When asked how much educated men were superior to those uneducated, Aristotle answered, 'As much as the living are to the dead.' |
