Surprisingly, it got so much love from the awesome AA on this site that it inspired me to complete it as a three-part series. ZERO EXCEPTIONS! 2) Spelling and grammar Nazis. Tons of writers ask for feedback or beta readers, so if you have an FF account and you notice an error in the writer's work, it's totally fine and probably appreciated to give the writer a heads up or constructive criticism - VIA PM! There's NO EXCUSE IN THE WORLD to rudely leave public feedback pointing out typos or errors as a "helpful" review. Do you think it makes you look smart? No, you look like an Ace Asshat who probably can't do any better, and you should know that everyone hates you. Bonus douchebag points if you're going around and correcting the reviews of other readers because you think they could have worded their feedback better. Seriously, get a life and try to find some other way to validate your pathetic, pointless existence rather than try to bolster your self-worth at the expense of others. 3) Unfinished and dropped stories, (especially really good ones at 20 chapters!)...and then I see the people writing new ones! Grrr...at least take the old one down so people aren't teased/kept hanging! I will NEVER post a tale I will not finish! Bad etiquette! 4) Writer folks who beg for reviews but never give any (it's a two-way street, guys!) and/or folks who just flat out nasty in the reviews they do leave. I have seen it way too often on other stories, and can only imagine how the writer must feel! Constructive criticism is one thing, but just negative flat-out nastiness is unnecessary and hurtful! FF is supposed to be fun guys! Can you do better? Are you Shakespeare incarnated? Yes? Prove it and post your stuff then! 5) People who can't take the time to reply or give thanks for reviews (which most of them repeatedly beg for!) Feedback is way too few and far between, and the way I see it, KUDOS of some sort isn't too much to bestow upon the people who are trying to write for reader's entertainment, and for taking that time out of their busy lives! But that being said, I think it's beyond rude for a writer to not even acknowledge or thank someone for taking their time to leave a comment! Bob Ross from The Joy of Painting acclaim used to get over 200 fan letters PER DAY and when people who regularly wrote to him fell out of touch, he'd CALL them just to see if they were OK. Ergo, regardless of how busy you are, if HE could make the time, there are ZERO reasons to be ignoring your reader reviews, no matter how many you already have; it just reeks of arrogance and douchebaggery. I personally welcome and appreciate them, and will always reply to them! 6) Writers so unappreciative of their readers that they actually believe it's kosher and not at all grotesque to be nasty about how busy/difficult their hard lives are so don't even think about pressuring them to ask when their story will be updated because how dare their loyal fans to give a flying leap about when they'll next update their story? Um, I get writing for yourself but... Why on Earth would you want to be a douche canoe to the people who are part of the reason you're writing in the first place? Would you rather be a writer with ZERO reviews and a story that nobody gives a flying leap about?! Yeesh, talk about biting the hand that feeds you! 7) Holding your work hostage by announcing in your story: "The more reviews I get or if I get X number of reviews, I will update this right away!" Are you kidding me?! How attached do you think people are to your work, you infuriatingly hubristic dipstick? Who Do You Think You Are, Fitzgerald? That people are clamoring over themselves for you to crank out your literary masterpiece? FFS it's FANFICTION! Either you write because YOU want to, or just be a normal person who appreciates reviews, which can certainly inspire a writer to update more frequently but here's something to think about special snowflake... There are thousands of other stories out there people will turn to for entertainment! You aren't the only shop in town, and if people aren't reviewing as much as you would hope to take a look at rules 1 through 7 here and see if any of them are a factor, hmmm? OK, rant is done!
