EDIT: Finally DONE! lol. Scroll below and check it out. 7-20-20: Am I the only one that never understood why some people put these "disclaimers" in their stories? (Example: I do not own any of the (blank) characters. They belong to (blank).) Like,... no kidding lol. I've always found it to be completely pointless. If we actually own our favorite fictional characters,... why would we be on Fanfiction of all places? Why would be on a fanfiction site writing stories about character that we would already own? lol. Maybe people just do it just because the next person does. Survivor - Mexico (Official Intro) Who's This? I'm KoopalingFan (KF/KFan). Basically some random dude on the internet that is huge fan of Smash Brothers. I mean, seriously. I remember the moment when I started to play Brawl's Subspace Emissary back in 2012 (after watching a walkthrough on YouTube). Ever since then, my love for the series grew more and more. As for my username, I would change it to something else, but I've been known as KoopalingFan for seven years. Why would I just now change it to confuse people? And besides, when I create usernames, I stick with them. Besides, I've discovered this site thanks to a Mario fic that I found on the internet. Want to get to know me? Tips On How to Make A Survivor Fic: Now, while I am currently working on my third season of Survivor, but after thinking it over, most likely there is someone in the world that would want to start creating some Survivor fics like I am doing right now, as well as other authors. If you are interested into making one, let alone a whole series, long story short, basically have entertaining characters, interesting strategic gameplay, and a strong narrative that would really paint a picture for the season. Minor details include decent challenges, interesting Tribal Councils, and memorable moments that would really make a story. For those interested, like I said, these are the main things you might wanna think about it. As for the longer version (that is if you want more detail, I'll happily fill you in if you feel that you need some advice (no need to be ashamed, as for none of us are perfect including myself, but that's the reason why we have to learn all we can.) Characters: Number of Contestants The max characters I'd do per season would be between 18 and 20, like the regular Survivor US seasons. Though if you really want to push the limit, I'd say 24 at the max. You want to have enough characters, though at the same time, there is such thing as having too many. Worst case scenario, it may turn potential readers off, say fifty for example... yeah, that means that it's going be a while to get through and some people simply wouldn't be interested in that many characters all at the same time. It'd also be a chore for the author to get through. That means fifty characters you need to work with, confessionals, character interactions, and generally just trying to remember who's there. That is a lot. I guess the one time I actually would not mind it as much is if you are only planning to do only one Survivor story. But even then, keep in mind that it's kinda going to be a lot. Character Development Now I have actually ranked all the real US Survivor seasons before, and the biggest factor for me are in fact the characters. For me, they either make or break a season depending on who's entertaining, strong strategically, or just simply being likable enough for me to give them a pass. Who wants boring, one dimensional characters that offer nothing to the season whatsoever? (This is one reason why I prefer "Emperors vs Knights" (my 2nd season) over my first season, "Kodai Island". There were some entertaining character and character moments, though at times, it was simply not enough.) Some might dismiss the whole concept of character development by simply saying that it's... "something other than strategy" or just "small talk", which greatly surprises me and something that I completely disagree with. Without fun characters and interesting story arcs, you get a boring season with nothing to remember it by. Balancing the "Edit" For those of you who are actual fans of the show, you may have heard the terms such as "the purple edit" or "invisible player". There is a video that you can watch in regards to the purple edit predicament (which does contain massive spoilers from multiple seasons), but long story short, it is basically a player that is rather "invisible" by barely being shown on the season comparing to other people. Now, because of the overall story a season may give us, not every character is as important as the next person (under the radar players do exists, but those are actually acceptable, because not every player needs to be on the radar 24/7). However, there is a difference between being under the radar and not being on the radar at all. That character becomes memorable for not being memorable. (Now, I was kinda guilty about this in Kodai Island, but that was before I finished every season and before I started to realize the problems of Survivor as of late. But still, even I was basically guilty of this lol). Now, I understand that if you have a lot of characters, it's kind of hard to balance the character edits and everything (trust me, it is, especially given the type of player a certain person is), yet it is definitely something that one should keep in mind. At least make sure the audience remembers as many people as possible. Try making a confessional chart (it's super effective) like fans do of the actual show to keep track of how many confessionals everyone has. If you want to know how to make one, Google your favorite season and type the words "confessional chart" right next to it to see an example, or simply PM me if you want any help. Gameplay: Strategy Strategy in Survivor alone is already complicated. Now imagine up to twenty people that you have to work with that may have completely different personalities with different mindsets. Yeah, quite a bit you're gonna have to deal with... especially considering the fact that you are only one person and that you can only do so much. It is not like there are actually up to 20 people on the island thinking for themselves with the host being there. You have to do all the work on your own, unfortunately... So you're probably thinking of how do you deal with this. My main strategy for doing so is to have my characters play and make moves based off their overall character, personality, and intelligence. Sure, if they have a certain strategic mindset, they would for them most part make the right moves to make for their own games. Though no one is perfect, so if there was a certain character that you may have where strategy is not really one of their strong suits, it increase their chances of messing up. Otherwise, even if the moves they can make to progress themselves further in the game are good, the thing you need to think about is how they exactly do it, based off their personalities. And as look as you keep thinking that, it makes things heck of a lot either. Starting with Emperors vs Knights is when this strategy when writing of how my characters made moves really proved to be useful for me. Twists/Advantages In case you haven't noticed, two of my three seasons involved "themes" or, the overall "twist". Regular Survivor typically does twists based off the castaways such as Heroes vs Villains, Fans vs Favorites, David vs Goliath, etc, otherwise known as the "theme" of the season. Or it'd be based off of game twists such as Ghost Island, Redemption Island, or Edge of Extinction. Though since the latter category isn't as well received, my seasons aren't based off of that, yet that's not the main point I want to make. Twists and advantages are kind of a thing in Survivor, especially nowadays. Since the TV show has been going on for 20 years with double the amount of seasons, it kinds needs a couple twists here and there to keep things fresh. Advantages tool, such as somebody receiving something like... an extra vote for example, which allows a player to go up to the voting urn at Tribal Council to vote not once, but twice. Stuff like that are what advantages are. People can also have hidden immunity idols which can nullify all votes cast against themselves. The problem? Lately Survivor acts like it can not have one season without like ten million twists in it, and it is one of the major flaws about the show nowadays. For those of you who are aware of this issue such as me, you don't have to worry about me having a twist every ten seconds... for the most part anyways until you read Kodai Island (yeah I'm bringing this up once again. Sure it's my first season, but it clearly wasn't perfect lol.) Not saying that there 999,999 twists in it, but there was like a couple twists that didn't really need to be there. So what does this mean for us overall? Of course you can't just have no twists at all every season, because that is literally just as bad and then people are gonna get bored. However, it is certainly possible to have a decent season without it being a contest of how many twists a season can take before it implodes on itself. It's called trying to find that middle ground. A few twists here in there in your seasons are fine. Simply just don't overdo it and make sure that they are balance and that they make sense. Narrative/Overall Story: Every season of Survivor is known for having a unique story or an overall narrative that takes place in order to give a certain season its name. For my series (except for my third season considering that it is not even done yet) both of them are both unique in its own way, as both of them had their own narratives. But in case you want a fic that has a specific theme, the overall story for the season would have to relate to the theme in some way, based off of how characters act, the strategic gameplay, and others things in between that would paint the narrative of the season. If you have a season that has no specific theme, however, it does not mean that it is not possible for it to have an overall narrative. Like I said, the characters could either make or break a season. Maybe the cast is what a season would revolve around, or maybe how chaotic and complex the strategy was... or maybe because of the location. Anything you want it to be, really. Yes, this part isn't as long as some of the other topics, but that is pretty much of all I have to say lol. Others: This category is for basically anything else, really. Like the challenges, Tribal Council, or this section could answer any other questions you may have. But I guess for now I can talk about the challenges and tribal real quick. Anyone who wants to make a Survivor fic should know about Tribal Council and about the challenges that people would need to face to send the losing team to Tribal Council for someone to be eliminated and be voted out of the game. And while I'm here, I guess I can discuss about pretty much the main problem when people write Survivor fics. They are simply rushed. Not saying that you have to have the longest story of all time, but I feel that for some Survivor fics people generally don't take their time with it, resulting in rushed scenes that could have lasted a bit longer. Of course nobody can just write a fic as if it is the exact same length as an average Survivor episode, but in order to feel like you are actually watching one, you'd realize that the episodes have more depth to it. For example, let's just back to what I said about character development and possible strategy... And you know what, throw in simply surviving in the wilderness. Rather than simply advancing the plot, if you feel like some parts are a little short, if there is a time, maybe add in a little character development or something in there as long as it is necessary, or maybe have a scene to where the survivors are struggling to cope with the new normal such as living on a deserted island or something. It doesn't have to be forced or anything, just describe of how certain characters would react to it. (And yes, I'm unfortunately kinda throwing Kodai Island under the bus again, but Emperors vs Knights ended up being longer because of me realizing that there wasn't enough character development or scenes of them simply living in the wilderness, and Mexico - Brain vs Brawn vs Beauty (my third season) is likely going to be longer than Kodai Island too in spite of it having 18 contestants in comparison to Kodai Island's 20 people.) While I'm at it, maybe I should all include that it'd be rather fun throwing in Jeff's catchphrases in there. (Not saying he has to be the host necessarily since inserting real people in fics are actually against the rules on here. (I threw in alternate names for some of the characters that actually competed on the show, since their names are mentioned in pre-season interviews, but after Mexico started, early in the fic I simply decided to not do it anymore and simply decided that I should only focus on my own seasons. Mixing real life contestants with fictional characters can be kinda awkward.)) But for whatever kind of host you have, I feel that inserting some of Jeff's old catchphrases would be interesting to see. (I'm actually surprised not many people do this lol.) For example: "The tribe has spoken." "Grab your torches, head back to camp. Goodnight." "(Insert your tribe name here), got nothin' for you. Head back to camp." Little stuff like that. Though you are not including the actual reality TV show host Jeff Probst himself, you are borrowing some of his old quotes and have your fictional hosts repeating them. Doing that not only continues to trend, but it makes readers actually feel like they are in front of their screens watching a season play out. Sighs Alright... That was rather long. Like I said, nobody including myself was perfect, but this is why this section exists to spread awareness about it all. I may add more stuff in the future in case if I find anything else to talk about in this section. If you want me to read your fic and critique, do not be hesitant to PM me and I'll give you reviews whenever I am not busy. And if you want me to list yours, let me know and I will add your fic to the list below. If you have an either ongoing/recently completed Survivor fanfic, shoot me a PM and it shall be mentioned here. Any feedback for them is appreciated (whether it'd be praise or criticism.)
