DEAR FULLMETAL MUFFINS: I want to reply to your reviews, but I cannot. Alas. For I do appreciate them and wish to thank you.

I actually even had something to say about one of them: I was going to say that I had fun throwing in Roy's brother, and that it was funny because it has taken me so long to write this story that I forgot Roy had a brother, and then recently referred to it again in a (not yet posted) chapter. I wonder if anyone else will remember Roy's brother by the time it gets posted. hehehe.

In the middle of writing a point-by-point comparison essay for my high school English class, I checked my email and found a wonderful review waiting to be replied to. I clicked the reply to button, and when I was finished, decided to look over some of my previous reviews to make me happy.

What I found was that fanfiction has been converted into one of those sites with an obsession over icon photos. I didn't really mind when the icon photo appeared on fanfiction profiles, because it made them more colorful and it didn't really get in the way of the profile itself. But now with icons appearing everywhere in tiny, hard-to-look-at thumbnail images which take up too much screen space and distract by flashing and looking weird in thumbnail size, fanfiction has become ONE OF THOSE SITES. I like having a cute picture of myself on my Facebook profile as much as the next person. But FanFiction.net has always been about the writing. Plain black and white text, no special effects. Not a lot of little ad-on programs and functions. As it's being renovated recently, I find myself detesting it more and more. I loved the simple layout I've grown used to over the past three years. I saw very little lacking. Now I see a visually displeasing layout combined with that annoying obsession over icon photos that I used to be able to escape on fanfiction. Why do we have to have a picture?! Since when was a penname no longer sufficient for the amount of self-expression needed? FanFiction is all about expressing yourself in your writing! It's the simple text, the artistry of the language, that's important here! I feel as if my safe little haven is being encroached upon by the addition of this feature. Now everyone has to find and display a cool, cute new icon. It has to represent us somehow. Be from our favorite fandom, display, in large stylish font, a message we adore. Anyone who neglects to upload an icon is subconsciously branded as an outsider, someone who must be socially inept.

The concept truly bothers me, although I return to my original statement that the worst thing about them is they take up too much space without being visible when you're trying to look through your reviews.
