I'll add more as I think of it... About my view of fanfiction - Firstly, I don't believe in mary sues. This is FICTION, people. The authors get to write about whatever they want, however they want, and make up whoever they want. If the author is writing in a way you don't like or has characters that seem "out of character" to you or has made up their own characters that seem too perfect to you, TOUGH. It's their story and if you don't like it, just stop reading. There is no need to leave a nasty review. It just makes people either angry or sad and there's no point to that. Constructive criticism is different from a flame review. Secondly, I don't believe there is such a thing as "out of character." In the world of fiction, you get to do whatever you want. In the world of fanfiction, the rules are the same - there are no rules. If someone takes a character like Draco Malfoy for example, and gives him a back story like abuse or neglect or not wanting to go with Voldemort's wishes, and that in turn gives him a softer side, what's it to you? It makes sense. I've seen this too many times to not say something. And, even if the author doesn't give a back story, they're STILL allowed to change the characters of the original story they chose to write about. Thirdly, writing is all about fun. Have fun with it. Be creative. There are no limits. Shed your limitations, and those that other people impose on you, and write about whatever you want. So go have fun :) |
