![]() Author has written 26 stories for Hogan's Heroes. Papa Bear Awards Committee member, co-chair of the 2021 awards, and occasional Reviewathon sponsor. I am an avid READER. I read almost everything in the Hogan's Heroes fandom here and I dabble in reading AO3 stories, but with a bit less enthusiasm -- it seems to me the on balance the writers I find compelling primarily publish their work over here. I enjoy works that show knowledge of canon and history, but I'm open to having my boundaries expanded with well crafted AU and out-of-character stories. I am intrigued by character studies and love a good caper. I generally skip over Mary Sues, graphic depictions of torture or rape, science fiction, religious themes, crossovers and stories that lean heavily on original characters. Constructive feedback matters, so I used to be a very active REVIEWER. But the review culture on Fanfiction is sadly in decline. My sad observation is that people like to get thoughtful reviews, but very few people bother to give them. It's increasingly awkward for me to be one of the few reviewers around, so I now find myself writing only a fraction of the reviews that I used to write--five or six a month versus 30 or more. I experience the decline of interest in reviews as a real loss, because I have always believed our ability to have a dialogue about stories is a sign of a vibrant, engaged community. However, if you want me to review your work, just ask me and I will. (Unless it's one of the categories I mentioned above. I cannot read stories with torture, rape, and obvious self-inserts.) If I do review your work, I hope you'll reciprocate by occasionally reading and reviewing mine, not just to make me feel good, but to have a real dialogue about the stories. I've been a fairly high-output WRITER, but so far I've produced far less in 2020 than I did in 2018 and 2019. I still have a lot of stories I want to write, though. I began contributing stories regularly in 2017 and got up a good head of steam in 2018, completing six stories, and was honored to receive 10 Papa Bear Awards, including the Gold Award for story of the year for "In the Name of the Father." In 2019, I completed 13 stories, and was delighted to receive 18 Papa Bear Awards, including Gold awards in seven story categories and a Bronze award for story of the year for "Dresden." I would say that in my writing, I focus a good deal on character formation and motivation--basically, trying to answer the question, "What makes characters act as they do?" Finally, I'm a willing BETA. Need a second pair of eyes on a story? I'm glad to take a look, particularly with shorter stories (under 3,000 words). My strength is smoothing out any bumps in your writing and making it as lively and engaging as possible. But if you're struggling with a plot hole, I'm not the best person to consult. |
