Katie and I (and Kiera), have also started a Sonic Harry Potter AU blog (). It's basically Sonic's world with an infusion of magic and other cool stuff. ABOUT ME

Currently: Enrolled in a creative writing MFA program. Improving my writing a bit every day.

Call me Ashe. She/her. I'm a gay asexual with the greatest girlfriend ever. Everyone should read her work and ogle her art. My best friend is really cool too. Also my child Blurry deserves tons of praise. Basically I'm the mom of the Sonic fandom.

In the Future: I've been writing for ten years and it’s become a large piece of my life. I can’t see myself doing anything different, so I hope to become an editor and writer.

My fics: are about Sonic the Hedgehog. I take pride in original ideas and twisting cliches. My focus is the bigger picture--the domesticity of life and the deeper meanings that come from the deeper reflections of characters. I get uncomfortably inside heads and focus on inner motivations while also fleshing out characters to be more rounded. I'm just really interested in the scenes between scenes; the stuff that usually gets skipped over in favor of plot.

What does this mean for Sonic? He is not a jerk. He lives in the Workshop. He considers himself a big brother and protective figure in Tails' life. He is sarcastic. He is not jaded. He mumbles in his sleep. He's obnoxious and difficult when ill. He is humbly prideful. He has profound thoughts and a large vocabulary. He reads. He sits still and has deep conversations with his few friends. He is not stir crazy after a few seconds of laying on the couch. He likes idleness and enjoys mundane moments because his life is one big adventure after another and even he needs a break. He runs. And runs. And runs. Not away, but toward. Toward his friends, his destiny, and his fate. He's not disjointed or emotionally separate from his situations. Did I mention that he's not a jerk?

My longer plots are usually involved while still being linear. My focus is usually on oneshot collections, as I like to form a larger story out of smaller ones. However, I do write continuous tales as well. No romance. No OCs. Game-verse is my bible. Sonic and Tails brotherly to the end. Also, the OVA rocks my socks.

On Characterization: if you read some of my older stuff, you'll see that I was an angst baby about everyone being out of character. I always made notes about it. I always tried to excuse it. Often, I would get people assuring me it was fine but I probably didn't believe them. The reality was, I didn't believe my versions of the characters weren't like everyone else's and they were just this side of wrong when it came to canon. Now, don't misjudge me: they weren't wrong in the sense that it was bad. They were wrong in the sense that they weren't right. They weren't spot on.

It's taken a few years, but now I know why. My characterization is bang on for the way the OVA (the 1996 movie) characterizes Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Tails and Sonic bicker. Knuckles is an active friend in Sonic's life. Sonic is lazy and a bit grouchy and snappish but he still has a good heart. Sonic likes to lie around and likes to complain, even if it's good-natured. He's critical of everything and doesn't necessarily go with the flow as much as games Sonic. This is the Sonic I write. If you're expecting the Sonic of the games exactly, you'll be disappointed. However, I may be biased, but I think my Sonic is pretty swell too.

Since 2007, so about ten years now.

So, you're a grad student? What are you studying?

Currently, I have a B.A. in English, and I'm working toward a Masters of Fine Arts in creative writing. Go figure.

Fic Recommendations!

I’ve been around the block a few times when it comes to the Sonic archive, and I can pretty much talk about all of the major (older) fics by name. However, for brevity, I’m only putting up a few fics that I think every Sonic writer/reader should look at.

Rising Star by JudasFm – whether you’re new or you’ve been living under a rock, you need to read this one. It is one of the most well known Sonic fics, and for good reason. Spot on characterization, beautiful brotherly bonding between Sonic and Tails, and it stays perfectly true to Sonic 2.
Burning Arrow, Wildfire Heart by Taranae – another well known one, but it’s justified. An adaptation of Sonic and the Secret Rings, it is hilarious, has great character interaction, and is fun to read.
Tails Underground by Asher Tye – a beautiful Sonic Underground fic that shows the sibs meeting Tails. He’s not your usual genius fox kit though; he’s a part of an assumed disappeared civilization. The background information in this one really shines; you can tell that the author took his time and thought everything through. Once again, the characterization is sublime and the story will grab you and never let you go.
Sojourn by Awdures – If you’re looking for a fic full of Sonic and Knuckles interaction, this is what you need to read. The characterization is so perfect I could cry, and the story is beautifully written. I go back and read it every few months; one of my favorites.
A Day in the Park by FigTreeofyourImagination – I’ll flat out admit, this one is surreal. But, it’s hilarious and a breath of fresh air when compared with all of the other fics that are out there. Gut-bustlingly funny, this story pretty much throws all preconceived notion on Sonic and throws it out the window. Everyone’s OOC and Sonic and Shadow are twins and magical. You have to have an open mind to read this, but you’ll be so glad you did.

I don’t favorite lightly, so any of the stories in my favorites are winners. These are the specific ones that left a very deep impact on me.
