Author has written 24 stories for X-overs, Princess Bride, Doctor Who, and Of Mice and Men. Greetings, Earthling... ...welcome to my profile! You may be here because you've read something of mine - in which case, awesome! Thanks! I hope you got as much pleasure out of reading it as I did from writing it. Or you may be here because I've reviewed something of yours. I'll let you know, then, that I try and put some sort of concrit on almost everything I read. It may be typos, grammar tips, continuity, sentence structure, bits that didn't convince me... What it is and how much there is depends on a lot of things. Please don't take it personally that I've put something that I think could be improved. The reason I give concrit is because that is what I want to receive. I am a beginner writer and would love to improve, and there's plenty of people on here who are far more experienced than me - so go on, be harsh! If you didn't like my fic, tell me...but more importantly, tell me why. Exceptions to my concrit rule are: crack-fic, very short ficlets, fics in other languages and fics by people I've been reviewing for a while and am familiar with who've heard it all before. If you really don't want me to concrit your fics, let me know. If you say so nicely, I may just leave noncommittal comments in the future to say I've read your writing, since I like to let people know, but...well, what am I supposed to say if I can't put concrit to balance out the positive? If you call me a troll, a flamer or some other manner of equally charming affectation (and yes, I've been called things here and there), I will quite simply just stop reading your fics - I have very little time most of the year, and none to waste on people who can't appreciate the time people give them to leave a helpful review and can't handle the idea that no-one is perfect. A bit about me...well, I'm a vet student hoping to go into academia in the field of avian pathology. One implication of my being a vet student is that for most of the year, I'm either up to my eyeballs in work and assessments or up to my elbows in a large animal. When I am here, however, I will find the time to review everything I read. Wouldn't it be great if everyone did the same? C'mon, people - let's make the Doctor Who fandom known as a happy place where the reviewing is free and easy! For all too much of my time, my creativity is locked in a rusty little cage on the top shelf of my mind. Writing is my way of opening the door to that cage and letting that creativity out for some exercise and a bit of a fly around. Much like the slogan of this site - "unleash your imagination". I write purely for pleasure - much of that pleasure, though, comes from improving my writing skills, which is why I want concrit, to raise my standards. I don't want to get lazy and just "make do" with anything that comes out. I'm writing in the Doctor Who fandom at the moment, and you can probably tell my character preferences from a mile off! I'm not a terribly prolific writer, and I'll only really ever work on one thing at a time. I've also got some original fiction planned out, and when I feel I'm up to a moderately decent standard with fanfiction, I intend to sit down and write a science-fiction fantasy novel. I'll say it now - I'm a prog rocker. Give me Pink Floyd, Rick Wakeman, Peter Gabriel, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Alan Parsons, Jeff Wayne, Mike Oldfield, Genesis, Supertramp, Focus, ELP... I've heard progressive rock described as trippy-weirdy, pretentious, complex, loaded with esoteric allegory, self-indulgent - and sometimes I worry that that's how my writing comes across. Still, it takes all sorts, right? Oh, and I'm a sucker for Metallica too. \m/ (-.-) \m/ My tastes in reading are a little harder to define. I don't like pairings - I can't/won't write them, and will tend to avoid them in reading, although since 90% of fanfiction includes some sort of pairing, my choices would be very limited if I didn't read any. (Actually, lately I've found myself with a bit of a soft spot for the Master/Rani ship...double the awesome! And I've dabbled in Doctor/Master subtext, which is growing on me...) I used to confine myself to serious sci-fi stuff, but as I've spent more time on this site, I've gotten used to ideas that were initially weird to me, so I'd say I read pretty broadly now. My favourite kinds of fanfics would probably be allegory/extended metaphor, angst/psychological and, in drastic contrast, humour/crack-fic. It does have to be well-written, though. Use a spellchecker, proofread, get a beta if necessary...it just gives a fic a polished sort of feel, gives the impression that the author's put a lot of work in. If your fic starts with an author's note along the lines of "sorry if there's mistakes, I haven't proofread/don't have a spellcheck/wrote it at 4am on a sugar high", I will stop reading there and then. If it wasn't worth your time to check it through before uploading it to the internet, it's obviously not going to be worth my time to read it. - "Your Lord and Master stands on high, playing track three..." - My Fics - A Reader's Guide: I have three quite distinctly different writing styles, and I know that just because you enjoyed one of my fics, doesn't mean you'll like all the others. So, to make life easier if you fancy reading something of mine (also so I can keep track of stuff), here's a list of my uploaded fics sorted into the three different styles: Serious Stuff: Fun and Humour: Cracked and Cynical (the weird stuff): Hopefully you can get along with one of the three. :) "For the Time Being: The Lodger" is a bit of an anomaly. It has mood swings - it can't decide whether it's guilt-ridden angst or bantering fun. Much like the characters involved, I guess... "Once Upon a Time" will become a compilation of oneshots of various genres. - "'The angels have the phonebox' - that's my favourite. I've got that on a T-shirt..." -Omagoshfanartings! If you've read "For the Time Being: The Lodger", you'll get why Ilssii-Koschei's little cartoon "Socks", at http:///d4izyx7, makes me smile. Thanks! :D - "I only need two things: your submission and your obedience to my will..." -I submit nearly twice as many reviews as I receive, and I like to receive them as much as the next person. :) Flamers will be eaten by the Master. Don't ever tell me they're going to retcon out the Valeyard. That's like telling little kids that Santa's not real. - "You are elevating futility to a high art. There is nothing you can do to prevent the catharsis of spurious morality..." -Currently working on: "For the Time Being" has become a series - "The Big Bang" will be coming soon. There's also the Bloopersverse fics, "Time and Time Again: The Bloopers" and "Time Waits For No Woman", which are ongoing works. And I doubt I can stay focused for long, so you might see the odd spontaneous one-shot popping up now and then. Future fanfics are currently in the form of a mosaic of post-it notes on a Wardrobe Door of Wisdom, with ideas for more plots than I will probably ever get time to write...watch this space... - "It seems to be a rather interesting extra-terrestrial lifeform..." -I also have a deviantART account: http:/// - this contains a few original fiction short stories and some Doctor Who-related odds and ends (all fanfiction is here, though). In the past, I've dabbled in blogging - that little museum of old musings can be found at http:/// Stop by on my LJ if you fancy helping fill out the Epic Pairing Table of Doctor Who Fandom, a collection of little Xs in squares and links to examples of every pairing that's ever been attempted in the DW fandom. - "Can't have you going around with a time-travelling teleport. You could go anywhere - twice! Second time to apologize..." -Feel free to PM me if you have a fic you'd like me to check out, and I'll try and find the time to read and review. Word of warning - I have a hawk's eye for typos, and few qualms about picking plot holes in your wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff! And do PM me if you're curious about any of my fics, if you've got any questions or want to point out plot holes...or even just to say hi and discuss sci-fi and fanfiction! Over and out. -Aietradaea:) - "Although I may appear to be my usual suave, urbane self, I am in fact using up massive amounts of energy to sustain my presence..." -Artistically inclined, even though rather avidly dreaming about epic angst. |
