I'm a 20-year-old university student. I'm a sociology major but I'm more or less interested in almost all fields of science and philosophy. I don't plan on actually writing fanfics, I set up an account because of the benefits the site offers to readers. I've watched a lot of different sci-fi series: Firefly, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, the different Star Trek series, Sanctuary and Doctor Who. I watch some non-sci-fi shows, too. As for my taste in (fan) fiction, I'm very rarely interested in romance. I don't mind it if it's not the main plot and the pairing is plausible. I'm not very passionate about any pairing and I strongly prefer gen. When I do ship something, the relationship is between enemies with a love-hate-relationship who couldn't believably be happy together under any circumstances. Happy couples are boring. My favorite ships are Doctor/Master and one-sided Sheriarty. Of course, I wouldn't approve of relationships like these in real life. Many of my favorite stories are dark and I'm a big fan of the kind of AU fics that ask "what if". I read a lot of long, plot-heavy fanfics. In the Stargate fandom, I particularly like fics where Daniel is a Goa'uld/Tok'ra host. Crossovers are nice too but writing them well is tricky. The reason is that in most imaginable crossovers, the canons simply aren't compatible: characters in one series may be far more powerful than in the other, the canons may contradict each other, the stories may have very different tones etc. For instance, a Doctor Who/Battlestar Galactica crossover would probably start with the Doctor trying to end the conflict between humans and Cylons. The humans and the Cylons might both think the Doctor was working for the other side and he'd be experimented upon. The events would result in large changes to BSG canon. |
