I have a thing for dead characters. For some reason I find their death affords them a depth unattainable to living characters. Don't ask.

Detailed summary: What if Near had to deal with a case akin to the one his predecessor had to solve with the help of the FBI agent Naomi Misora? What if the story was just repeating itself?
Near is the new L. After the Kira case, he sees himself involved in a new strange case. The only thing he can understand is this: Mello is still alive and is determined to catch his attention at any cost. And he succeeds in a quite unexpected and extreme way. Unfortunately, the world's new greatest detective finds himself unable to figure out that mystery, at least not without a little help... Once he has accepted his only weakness, he finds the woman of the situation: the french criminologist and lawyer Elena Cabestan. Thanks to her help, the two famous geniuses will learn to understand each other as hatred and rivalry will eventually turn into love.

Detailed summary: Light Yagami looses his parents at a young age and is admitted into the Wammy's House at nine years old. There he meets twenty-five mysterious pupils whom are all called by a letter. The oldest and cleverest student of them all answers by the letter L. As soon as R enters the House, a strange mutual fascination settles between him and L, even though the two boys are separated by a seven-year-old age gap.
As they grow up, they develop a profound, ambiguous relationship, earning the other students' and directors' wariness.
