I am an Academic Librarian by trade and a geek by genetics.
Statement on Fandoms:
Here's the thing. I'm a librarian. Librarians pretty much like everything or at least a large wide bi-polar cross section of everything. So you will see me writing about many and varied fandoms, ships, and plots. I don't have "one true" anything. I do, however, like stories where there's some real meat to the characters and I love playing with unconventional 'ships. And I have been known to take a request now and then but it has to be very very interesting. I also tend to write AU's since my getting pissed off at the "official" version tends to be a large motivator for getting out my quill pen.
Why I have so much WIP:
See statement above. Librarian. Short attention span. HOWEVER - I do promise that unless I die unexpectedly I will finish them all. I've actually forced myself to not post any new multi-chapter stories until I finish all the outstanding. I'm working my way through. It will take a while. Good news is the HUGE number of new things I've got happening that you'll get to see in large chunks once I start posting.
Why I have typos:
I often operate without betas, usually because of time restraints and because I haven't found people that are both available and good. There are some exceptions to that- some have come and gone, or others that work with me on particular ships. If you likely my story but complain that it needs betaed - well, how about volunteering? Face it people. Fanfic is a hobby that we all do for free. Professional editors are not falling out of the sky on to writer's front lawns begging to give it a go. We do the best we can reading our own stuff - which pretty much means we will always miss a wrong word or a misspelling or a dropped participle... Nobody can edit their own stuff with 100% accuracy. I don't mind you pointing out my mistakes in a review or PM - actually, I love it. But I don't respond to people who get snobby and nasty about it. This should be an inclusive community of people who write and read for the love the word and the story. If you don't feel the love, don't share your words.
Why am I still on :
This is an easy one. I've been here since back in the heady pay-for-alerts days in the early 2000's. I can't say I was here from the start - I wasn't. But I wasn't that far off! I have lots of reviews stored here - both on my stories and that I've left on others. I also happen to love the metadata and filtering abilities...but that goes back to the librarian thing. I will be cross posting to AO3 (Archive of Our Own) under the same name but I intend to keep this as my main repository of my work as long as I can. I don't consider to be "censoring" because using this site isn't a human right - it's a private website! Now if a government says I can't write it or post it that's censorship. A magazine refusing to publish an article, or in this case a website refusing to post a story, that violates its policy isn't in the same camp. Since I work with teens a lot, I get why they don't want anything too explicit. I don't think it's realistic, but I respect it. I don't believe any of my current stories violate the policy, but since the line between M and X is rather blurry, expect anything new that gets close to the mark to have links out.
Other names I go by:
My real name is Shannon and in the handful of print zines and ezines I publish in (all Star Trek) you will see my stories under that name. When I started posting under Saavik I was only writing Harry Potter and I was 18 - goddess that was a long time ago. I didn't realize I'd be branching out, so while the name is okay for HP, it's rather bad form to use a characters actual name for that fandom! (I think.) So you will see most of my ST stuff under Shannon and everything else under Saavik or Saavik13.
