![]() Author has written 8 stories for Lord of the Rings, Thunderbirds, Magnificent Seven, and Naruto. Name: Sarah Age: 21 Address: Aha, you didn't seriously think I'd post it here, didja! I will give you a hint though. I'm somewhere in England. Most of the time. General Explanation Okay, as I've been visiting this site for two years now, and had the same bio for all that time, I've finally decided to update it a little. Some of my ideals have changed, some of my favourites have fallen by the wayside in my pursuit to find the best fics around. So, time for a spring clean of the profile. Even if it is september now... Now, when I was only a recent addition to this site, I decided to start slowly and create something which wouldn't stretch my creative side too much. Unfortunately, that plan resulted in this pitiful excuse for a profile, where I basically burble on about nothing for a hundred lines in the hope of making myself feel better for having finally submitted something. But then again, maybe all was not lost. As really, I wouldn't be looking at this again for a while, and could happily ignore it, whereas you, my poor audience, are still having to sit through it two years on. Quick, click the 'back' button now! Escape while you can! Before writing the normal bio, about what shows I like and which sources I'll most likely use for future fics, I wanted to explain about the pen name. Being a very indecisive person by nature (it took me two days to decide on my first email address), I had to consider what I want other people to know me as. So, eventually I decided on the rather presumptious name of 'Freeflow'. 'Why!' I hear you call, throat raw and desperate from the crippling suspense. Simple; that is how I write. I find it far easier to let any story that my imagination devises (I take no credit for it at all!) just run out on to paper, playing itself out in its own way, than to plan a structure or plotline before starting. Once my brain ink has run dry, then I go back and punctuate and edit until it's suitable for human consumption. Phew, well, now that I got that little tidbit of information off my chest, on with the bio show! Likes and Possible Sources This list could go on forever, as I love a great many books and TV shows. However, at the moment, there are a few that win out over others, so I'll start with them; Books - I recently graduated with an Honours degree in English Lit at university, so books are what I love. You name it, the likelihood is I've read it or have heard of it. Well, if it has aliens or mutants in it, that is. Oh, and a little bit of Shakespeare never hurt anyone either! Some of my favourite books are - The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Dylan Thomas poetry, the Red Tree (a children's book, but beautiful in its subtle message) and Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Fabulous. With over 2000 books already in my ever growing collection, I think it's about time I began to write a few stories and poems of my own. TV Shows - It is a widely recognised fact by all those who know me that I am a certified GEEK. I love all sci-fi shows, especially the various Star Trek incarnations, Andromeda, Dark Angel, Battlestar Galactica (original and updated versions) and even Veritas: The Quest (if that qualifies as science fiction). However, my geekiness does not stop there, because unfortunately for my sister (who is terminally embarrassed by this fact) I am also in love with old cop shows. Starsky and Hutch, Miami Vice, The Professionals, The Champions (okay, so they had super powers, but they had a great theme tune!), they are all my passion, and I cannot get enough of them. Along with Bonanza, Carnivale, The 4400, Magnificent Seven, Supernatural, the OC and The Dukes of Hazzard to name just a few, I have accepted that I am a hopeless case, and that I will never be cool. Oh well. It's good to be different I guess. Anime - This is the section that needed the greatest overhaul, as I have become immersed in Japanese productions over the last year. My first love was Gundam Wing, and it will always have a nostalgic resonance with my school days, but in college I'm afraid I regressed to Beyblade and Yu Gi Oh, which is aimed at a distinctly younger audience. But what can I say? I love pretty cartoons and friendship plotlines, and they both called out to me. More recently, Naruto has captured me, and Shippuden has become a weekly luxury that I find myself looking forward to more and more. Along with firm favourites Weiss Kreuz (mmm Aya!), Get Backers (funny and fast paced), Peacemaker Kurogane (absolutely gorgeous if heartbreaking), Wolf's Rain (devastatingly pretty) Saiyuki (which is completely perfect in every way, whether you want funny, beautiful art or complex plotlines) and Descendants of Darkness (fabulous characters and intricate arcs), I love numerous shonen ai series, like FAKE, Gravitation, Saint Seiya and Loveless. Although I'd probably have a hard time actually writing something based around anime, I love to read it, and yes, occasional yaoi too (mainly because its so hard to find fics specifically written without it! But hey, you have to be flexible and try a little piece of everything at least once, right?). Oh, and my new love, the Final Fantasy CGI movies, even though I'm not sure that they belong in this category, but I don't have any other place to put 'em, unless I start off a new 'films' list! (And trust me, I could go on for hours with that one!) Dislikes and Probable Rants This list is considerably shorter than the last, thanks mainly to my ability to tolerate most things. Everyone is different and needs to express themselves in their own unique way, but there are some things that wind me up; Excessive Expletives - This can be taken in two ways. Firstly, and literally, this rant means that I dislike the use of words just because they are available; filler plotlines, characters that in no way advance a story or the over use of adjectives that only serve to crowd a description. Secondly, I dislike the excessive use of swearing in texts. I understand that circumstances can sometimes call for such phrases to be deemed necessary, and let's face it, the majority of TV shows are unrealistic in their lack of swearing, however, the overuse of such words can be offensive, and more often than not, serve to drag the story down. In my view, the majority of shows that fans write about are favourites because of the pleasant atmosphere they create for an audience, and I believe fics written based on these shows should reflect that. Phew. Rant over. See how you got me started there? Once I get goin'... Premature Cancellation - Certain death for any self-respecting TV series, 'permanent hiatus' is like a knife to the heart. Why! Veritas? Why! Dark Angel? Why! Magnificent Seven? Why! Enterprise(Oh,I'll get back to YOU in a minute, mate!)? Why! Firefly? Why! Starsky and Hutch?... Oh right, they're like 60 year olds now... Oh well. That's what fanfic is for, right? Character Death - Why on earth anyone in their right mind would want to kill off a major character in any show is beyond me... I mean, take Trip in Enterprise (I told you I'd be coming back to you!). The final episode of the final season, possibly of the final Star Trek series. EVER. Why in all the known galaxies did they kill off the best and most interesting character in the final episode? Did they do it to further a storyline? NO. Did they do it so that the actor could be free to work on other projects? NO. Did they do it to save Earth, humanity or even Enterprise itself? NO? NO. It served no purpose at all, other than to royally screw up my viewing pleasure and ruin all possible repeats in the future. The same goes for fanfics too. I know it causes major angst amongst characters and creates juicy psychological damage for the remaining cast, but come on, you're playing with my emotions here! Just for future reference, none of my stories will be death fics. Or slash fics. (Although I have grown to like some of the anime pairings out there...) Screwing around (literally, in some cases!) with original characters leads to confusion, as you often don't know where you stand in terms of reading one authors fic, then someone elses. And that way lies doom. Fics I Love I have just looked over my Favourites List for the first time in a while, and have to say, it may be time to go back and read the stories there again. I know I've gone on for ages in this bio, but even if you skip everything else up to this point, please take the time to look at those won't be disappointed, as every one of them has solid plotlines, believable characters and an overwhelming sense of professionalism that will leave you wanting more. And for those who don't just want a story or two to peruse, dip in to my Favourite Authors list to find those I consider some of the best writers on the net. There's a range of different fandoms, reflecting my many interests, so I'm certain there'll be something there for everyone. And each author would love the extra hits and reviews, I'm sure! Okay, so that's me done. Profile? Check. Mandatory facts? Check. Square eyes? Check. Fingers red raw? Check. Ready to initiate fic writing sequence? Affirmative. Initiating in 5, 4, 3... See you on the inside... Update for 2008 Okay, I know no one may be interested, but for those wonderful people reading my LOTR fic, don't forget me. I am still around and writing, but have been completely swamped by my first semester at Masters level, and have had literally no time to write anything fun. If it isn't an essay, it is not on the priorities list at the moment, and for this I apologise (especially as I've just posted a Thunderbirds fic - but honestly, I wrote that in about twenty minutes and all because of an image I could not shift from my mind. It was for the good of my education that I had to exorcise that particular inspiration, believe me!). However, my last essay of this semester should be done by the end of January, hopefully leading to a slight grace period to get back to fanfic before dissertations take over. Oh what a wonderful life! (And to think I'm actually paying for this torture!) So please don't give up on me, as I will finish that tale if it takes until I finish my PhD! See you all soon xx |
