I am a relative latecomer to the world of fanfiction. I don’t even have a good excuse, having had a flatmate in graduate school who was an avid reader and writer in the community. It may have taken me too long to get here, but I am making up for lost time.

It is thanks to Avatar: the Last Airbender that I finally took the joyous and long overdue plunge into this world. On a rainy vacation in Vancouver, friends of mine sat me down to watch the first season of the show when I asked where their cat Momo got his name.

I stayed up for the next day and a half to finish the series, opting for lounging on their couch rather than visiting the sights. My only complaint is that they did not introduce to me to the show sooner.

Obviously loving the show instantly, I was irked by the finale, in particular by the final romantic pairings. Isolated idiot that I was, I googled to see if anyone else thought Zuko and Katara would have made a better couple. I clicked on my first Zutara fanfiction, Kimberly T’s fantastic ‘Promises to Keep’ and lost my entire social life for the next several weeks as I binge read hundreds upon hundreds of stories.

Wanting to contribute to the community that has given me such escapist pleasure these last few months, I have begun writing my own piece. My only hope is that it will encourage others to do the same.
