UPDATE: I'm so sorry for abandoning FF. I've been going through a lot of stress and have been pretty depressed. I might have GAD and depression, but I am yet to be properly diagnosed. I've been thinking about life (and death) and realise that I can't leave my FanFiction account alone, what with all the request for more story chapters and praising comments. I've uploaded 'The Curse of Immortality', which may or may not say something about how I feel at the moment. I write tragedy and horror when I feel sad or anxious - which is the majority of my life - and write friendship and romance when I'm happy and at peace - which is not as much but still present.

I have a hard time accepting criticism because my whole life I've strived for perfect scores, appreciation and recognition. When I am flamed for a weird story structure, too much tragedy or just criticised for the story content, I feel personally attacked. I don't feel like I achieve anything when I write stories for myself and so write on FanFiction to show my talent and continue improving my writing skills. I want to feel safe here, but when I get an abusive, sarcastic or negative review for a story I worked hard on, I feel worthless. Like I'm not good enough.

When I get positive reviews, I want to cry. I feel like I've impressed someone and proven myself wrong - I do have worth, I am good enough. So if anyone out there is reading this profile (of all things) and you like what I've written, thank you. I've been noticed, among the thousands and millions. Someone actually likes me.

My stories are often a reflection of my mind and soul. I talk about things as fiction when I can't talk about them as fact. If my story has an odd structure, it's meant to be read as odd. If a pairing falls out of love, I'm falling out of love. If a character dies in a brutal and bloody way, there's probably something else going on in my life that might reflect an equal amount of pain. It goes on and on that way, and can't be changed. I won't write about something that I know nothing about.

So for those people that wrote positive reviews on anything I've written, thank you. For those who saw good things and bad things yet commented both honestly and professionally, thank you. For those who couldn't see past their narrow view of what's right and what's wrong and impulsively set my comment sections aflame with negativity, I pity you. But no matter what you say, I will never apologise or take down what I have written. Ever. If you find it offensive, click away and never click back. That way, you won't be hurting anyone. You don't have to waste time expelling preconceptions and hate-filled values into my review section and I don't have to know what you really think.

By the way, if you think one of my fics is really bad, check the Last Updated part. It's probably a few years old.

On the subject of Canon and Non-Canon Pairings:

Yep, I'm going there. But I'm sure someone out in the World Wide Web has already gone there. I just want to fling out some philosophical goodness in the name of FanFiction. Never thought FanFiction could get philosophical? Read this shit.

In some way or another, a FanFic writer has come across Canon Wars. I have, many times, tried to break them up and failed, while also getting kicked in my beliefs. I don't know whether what I say is going to make them stop (probably not) but they really need to.

Why? It's tearing up our communities.

I am a Sonic the Hedgehog fan. Simple and plain. I have loved the games and the TV shows and the comics since I was young. I collect the merchandise and watch Sonic-related news channels on YouTube and subscribe to YouTubers that play Sonic games with mods and customizations to enhance the gameplay experience (see Cobanermani456 and Tails Channel). That is how I support the Sonic fan community. But I also contribute to the community; my FanFics. As it suggests, it's all fiction. I dont hold onto the belief that this is real, or that this is true to the storylines of the games, TV shows, comics, etc.

However, there are many writers out there that DO believe in what they're writing and DO believe what they say is true. These writers are 'Canon Writers'. Of those self-proclaimed Canon Writers, only 3% of them are as they say they are. They write about what has happened already in the Sonic universe and they stick to the storyline. They do not postulate on what might happen. The other 97% of writers are better known as 'Canon Pairers'. These writers write only about a particular pairing between two characters that is deemed to be 'canon', or honest to the storyline, and postulate about what the future might be for these characters. This is their sole focus - the romantic and/or sexual relationship between two characters that might be or might've been or are a couple.

This is not the issue. If two characters are dating (or share some other type of relationship) within the storyline of the universe then it is canon to write about them being a couple. There is nothing wrong with writing about pairings. Where things become out of hand is when Canon Pairers start arguments with other Canon Pairers that contradict with their pairing. A good example would be SonicXAmy Pairers and SonicXSally Pairers. This is how it usually goes:

Sonally Pairer: Sally is the only true lover for Sonic. Get out, Sonamy fans!

Sonamy Pairer: That's not true. Amy has always been Sonic's love interest. How about YOU get out?!

Sonally Pairer: WRONG! Amy is just a fangirl. She will never date Sonic, unlike Sally. Get your facts straight!

Sonamy Pairer: I thought Sonic and Sally broke up. That means they aren't in love anymore and Amy has all the right to date Sonic. It's not like he's unavailable.

Sonally Pairer: It will never happen. Sonic doesn't like her that way. She's just a whiny little brat. She's useless!

Sonamy Pairer: If she's so useless, why is she in the comics and the TV shows too? Unlike Sally, who isn't in the games, only in the comics and that one old TV show. Comics aren't canon anyway. The games are right.

Sonally Pairer: Don't step on MY TURF! IF YOU WANNA GO, THEN LET'S GO!

Sonamy Pairer: WHY DON'T WE TAKE THIS SHIT OUTSIDE THEN, COMIC BOOK WHORE?!

Sonally Monster: WANNABE!

Sonamy Monster: NEVER TO BE!

This can happen for other pairings too: KnucklesXRouge v ShadowXRouge, TailsXCream v TailsXCosmo, SonicXBlaze v SilverXBlaze, TailsXCream v CharmyXCream, SonicXAmy v SonicXMina, JetXWave v StormXWave, KnucklesXRouge v KnucklesXJulie-Su, etcetera.

I think people are forgetting two important facts: one, life is complex and people may have many love interests. There aren't many people out there that can say they've been with their partner all their life. It's very rare, if at all. So why not reflect this in fiction? And two, this is FICTION. It's not real, no matter how much you want it to be. I think these Pairers shouldn't be so invested in their pairings that they attack others because it doesn't align with their beliefs. This is called ethnocentrism, to give it a fancy word. It is the judgement of one group of people based on the values and standards of your group. In this case, Sonamy Pairers and Sonally Pairers are judging each other based on what they believe to be true, when it may not be true for the other group. This is how racism and homophobia and religious wars start in real life.

I am not saying don't include these aspects in the FanFics that we write. But don't encourage it in our community. Let us be relative to one another, because we are a community. Instead of talking about who is superior or inferior, why don't we talk about our similarities. Sonamy Pairers and Sonally Pairers have something in common; they both love Sonic. Talk about Sonic. Same goes for every other pairing that exists - not just for Sonic the Hedgehog, but all sub-cultures that exist as fandoms. Let us be united.

Of those reading this, you could say: Aurora, you write about Non-Canon pairings. They don't even exist. How can you even talk about Canon Pairers when your pairings are mostly Yaoi?

You are right. I don't write about Canon Pairings often. I write about things that wouldn't even be accepted in the world, let alone in a kid-friendly franchise like Sonic. But I think that is what makes it different. I KNOW what I write about isn't canon. I KNOW it will never happen in real life. Not to toot my own horn, because there are Non-Canon Pairers out there that do think their pairing should exist, but the majority of us don't start wars over whose pairing is better. In fact, we often crossover with our pairings to include the pairings of a friend. We can write about multiple Non-Canon Pairings, even though we might favour one over the others. Yaoi writers are even more desperate to stay in touch with their fellows because we get the most hate over what we write about. Nobody wants to read gay or lesbian FanFiction unless it's making fun of it.

Non-Canon Pairers write about things that nobody wants to talk about in normal conversation.

I could NEVER hope to sit down at the dinner table and tell my family that I just wrote a gay love story about Sonic and Shadow. I would be met with disgust. Likewise, I could not talk about my love and respect for works of Yaoi and Yuri to my friends or talk about Marriage Equality to society. I would be ignored or heavily reprimanded.

This is my domain, on FanFiction, to be myself and express how I feel about life. As it is for many fans. Whether you write about Canon Pairings, Non-Canon Pairings, both or none, we should all feel safe and able to write about our fancies. We shouldn't be insulting each other at all. There should be no flames here but the flames in our hearts that coax us to write.

We writers are all liars in the end. But that doesn't mean we are not seeking our own truths. Let us do what FanFiction promises we can do: unleash our imaginations.
