![]() Author has written 23 stories for Canterbury Tales, Peter Pan, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Doctor Who, Zorro, Robin Hood BBC, and Pride and Prejudice. Oddly enough I've always considered 13 my lucky number, and I've now been a member for 13 years, so it's about time I revised my profile again. I've definitely done more reading than writing around here, but there are such talented writers in so many fandoms, I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the reading. I'm still enjoying that even as I've restarted writing on my own things. So for background, I consider myself a child of the 1980s, though my user name is inspired by the late-nineteenth century best-selling novelist, Marie Corelli, who now languishes in pretty much reasonably deserved obscurity (though some of her books are still pretty readable--she wrote truly purple prose that could be almost hypnotic in its intensity). She was a bit of a diva, who thought her writing was transcendental genius on par with Shakespeare instead of someone who just managed to catch the tide of popular culture of the time, and she had some truly Mary Sueish characters. I'm not sure what it says about me that I chose this, since the only thing we really have in common is an unreasoning love of the em dash and parenthetical statements, or maybe dream imagery. It could be the dream imagery. I love reading with a passion, and I love to write (though I went through quite a nasty bout of writer's block that lasted years); I have a tendency to write at a slowish pace. And after that nasty bout of writer's block that made "One More Rich in Hope" take three years to complete, I'm determined to never again to start posting another story without the draft being finished. "Love Has No Rhyme and No Reason" is not really an exception as it's really a series of episode-based stories set in the same alternate universe. Each story in that one will be complete before it's published. I love Doctor Who (almost all of it, even the wobbly bits), Zorro (both Disney and New World), Scarecrow and Mrs. King and at the moment I'm mainly working on stories for these (well, New World Zorro rather than Disney, though if I can come up with an idea for the latter I'll write that too). I must admit I'm rather fond of doing crossovers when I've got the right material, even if it's a stretch. Also, I'm not sure how I forgot to mention my love of Jane Austen when I wrote this profile the last time, but I do love her. Ironically or perhaps not, Emma is my favorite of her novels while Pride and Prejudice is the one I love reading (and now writing) fanfiction for. And another irony is that I actually am quite fond of the 1940 movie version of Pride and Prejudice because it was watching that that finally got me to read the novel for the first time, the irony being that if I'd read the book first I would have completely hated the film for how different it was from the novel. My favorite adaptation is, of course, the 1995 Colin Firth version, as it is truly well done and engaging even if I cannot stand how they portrayed Mr. Collins as a greasy toad (I actually like the 1940 version of him best as I could actually see Charlotte and him being tolerably happy together). Unfortunately for the 2005 version it stands in the shadow of both the novel and the 1995 version and while I find Mr. Darcy interesting enough, there's too much that annoys me. And while Firth is my ideal Darcy, I'm not sure I've ever seen a completely ideal Elizabeth (in many ways I think she's the much more difficult character to portray). I have seen the 1980 version and while there are some things I like (Wickham and Collins), it was rather too stagey and uninspiring for my tastes. I in fact can hardly remember much of it at all. BBC's Robin Hood was an unexpected fandom to inspire me to write. I never expected to like it or Sir Guy as much as I did (or have anything make me jump from the Robin/Marian ship), but then I've always had a weakness for certain kinds of villains. Beyond those, I'm interested in the Discworld books (primarily City Watch ones), Star Trek, Leverage, The Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes (in many forms, but Rathbone will always be my Holmes), The Shadow (pulp and radio), Doc Savage, and Old time radio mysteries, mystery novels, and old movies in general, but especially mystery and sci-fi pictures. I'm most fond of intelligent heroes as well as intelligent villains. Also, beyond fanfiction, I do have a fondness for making fanvideos, and I'm also LaCorelli on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/LaCorelli) where I've done videos for Zorro, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, and Doctor Who. In other words, pretty much the same shows I write fanfiction for, though I might expand beyond that if I can ever get back into making them again. And that's about it for now. |
