Author has written 6 stories for Labyrinth, New Jedi Order, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Naruto. I'm a young college student with an obsession with stories of any type. As such I tend to be interested in a wide variety of fandoms. I write fanfiction usually to satisfy some craving that I'm left with after the original story is done, though sometimes I write it just for the sheer amusement of the story. I tend to view fanfiction as a way to practice writing. Thus, when you leave a review, I would appreciate more that a simple "I liked it/I hated it." I would like to know what specifically you liked/didn't like about my writing. In other words, I want a critique. Pet Peeves in Fanfiction: Character Bashing:I hate this. People take a perfectly good character and make them act completely OOC just because they don't like them. Two examples that really piss me off are Anzu of Yugioh and Aerith of FFvii. Anzu is a pretty confident kickass girl who I wish I was friends with, but she often gets made out to be a petty slut who's using Yuugi to get at Yami. Seriously guys. She was Yuugi's friend way before the whole thing started. She doesn't deserve that. Yes, she does the friendship speeches in the English dud (I mean dub), but let's be honest, all of the main characters do that. And who wouldn't be confused by the whole "best friend having another personality in his head" thing (I know I would). Frankly, I think most of the people who bash her are just jealous that she gets to hang out with all these awesome characters. Aerith is kinda similar in personality (minus the friendship speeches) and get's pretty much the same treatment, mostly by Tifa/Cloud supporters. That's another reason people bash: because the character is somehow interrupting their "OTP." Now I like Tifa and Cloud together, but I also happen to like Aerith. (It should be noted that this works both ways, i.e. Aerith supporters bash Tifa. I just happen to read more Tifa/Cloud). Completely, Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt, Non Canon Pairings: Look, I'm not talking about those pairings that never actually happenin canon, but are still a possibility (for example, Jareth and Sarah of Labyrinth, or Faith and Spike of BtVS, or even Kyp and Jania of NJO). I'm talking about those pairings that are absolutely ridiculous, as in how the heck do you even get the idea that that could ever happen? Examples: Fred/George of Harry Potter. Twincest... ew. Just... ew. Another one is Ranma and Kuno of Ranma1/2 (shudder). Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind of FFvii (Cid is marriedto Shera people, and Vincent still isn't over Lucretia). One that I dislike, but can at least put up with sometimes, is Jonouchi and Kaiba of Yugioh (let's see, Jonouchi stares at Mai's boobs all the time, Kaiba just hates everyone... yeah. You do the math. Personally, I think this one was just thought up to finish off the group of Yami/Hikari pairings). You'll note that most of these are slash. Let me get one thing straight. I am not against Male/Male or Female/Female relationships (read Smirks if you don't believe me). However most of these pairings that I think are just wrong are slash. People take characters that are pretty obviously straight (most of the population is heterosexual) and put them together with other people because... you know what? I don't even know why. Because they think the characters look good together? Because they're hormonal young girls who think guy on guy action is hot? I don't understand it and I don't want to understand it. People... please let's stick to canon. Run on Paragraphs:I don't like bad spelling. I don't like bad grammar. Fine. I can still deal with them (though there is a spell check thing for a reason. even provides one for you). What I really hate is when people can't even format their paper correctly. There is a rule in stories that I learned in, what was it, second or third grade I think, concerning dialogue. To wit: When a new character speaks, you start a new paragraph. Look people, I'll read almost anything with a plot, but trying to get through your mess of overlarge paragraphs is just a headache I don't want to deal with, not to mention trying to figure out who's speaking when. Make it easy on us please. Mary-Sues: Do I even need to explain this one? Male Pregnancy: This one just irritates me. It's not physically possible, for one, and dare I ask where the baby would grow? How would it be born? I guess in my mind doing this equates with ruining what made the relationship special. You're trying to turn one of the men into a girl, in a way, as if to make the pairing fit more into the "normal" stereotype. I'm not really explaining this well, but it just feels wrong to me. If you really want your gay pairing to have a child they can adopt. Ok, rant done. Sorry about that. I should probably make one thing clear so that people aren't surprised when it happens. I only support canon explicit or canon implied pairings (I think I said something like this earlier). However, I don't have OTPs. Therefor, I might support multiple canon implied pairings with the same person. For example, and this is intended for all you people who read Smirks in particular, I don't just support Yuugi/Yami, I also support Yuugi/Anzu (gasp, I know. I've betrayed you. Get over it). By the way, I really need a beta reader, specifically for Nine Seals for a Fox, so if anyone knows or is one and is very familiar with the Narutoverse I'd really appriciate it if you sent me a message. |
