Ahnkmor is a desert nation bordered by the Silver Sea, Praxus Crystal City, and Kalis. The desert nation is distinguished by its medicinal studies and innovation. The largest and oldest of its cities, Oasis, near the southern border with Kalis is a popular tourist destination. Oasis carries an eclectic combination of architectural styles ranging from modern to ancient Ahnkmorish with influences from their ten centicycle occupation by Crystal City. The Oasis Spring Bazaar brings in thousands of tourists as traditional crafters from the still primarily nomadic Ahnkmorish population gather in the marketplace to sell their goods. Geography: The harsh landscape of Ahnkmor keeps most visitors sequestered in the cities. With frequent sandstorms, little water, and more venomous animals per square akaina than any other city-state, the Ahnkmor tourism board advises against non-natives trying their luck in the wilds. Religion: Traditional Ahnkmorish religion, called A’slaf, is still heavily practiced in the hunter-gatherer tribes, despite the long Crystal City occupation. A’slaf incorporates the worship of ancestors and natural elements such as wind, fire, and rain as well as belief in a pantheon of greater powers. The primary deities are Daya, the goddess of life; Ni’haya, goddess of death, and the great sun, Shams. The six moons are also important, but worship varies between the tribes. Economy: Among themselves, Ahnkmorish still primarily use the bartering system. This makes Ahnkmor the poorest city-state in terms of GDP. In the cities such as Oasis, credits are becoming more accepted, but during the Spring Bazaar there is a mix of those who will accept credits and those who barter. With the mix of credits and bartering, the Ahnkmorish economy is not considered stable and as such, sees little interest from outside investors. Population: 26 million Spoken Languages: Kalimat, Iax Official Language: Kalimat Currency: Bartering, Standard Credits Government: Tribal World Council Representative: Sable Primary Exports: Minerals, precious stones, ore, raw materials for manufacturing medicine. oOo Crystal City Background: Once an empire that occupied 70% of the world population, Crystal City is now the smallest sovereign city-state on Cybertron. Settled deep in the Crystal Mountain Range, Crystal City is bordered by Praxus, Ahnkmor, Iacon, and Kalis. Most of the stone has been stripped from the mountains, revealing veins of diamonds, quartz, and gold that reflect the suns giving the city its name. Crystal City is the religious center for Disciples of Primus. The city-state is famous for its crystal sculptures and architecture. Admittance to the city-state is difficult with an expensive and complicated visa process. Visitors are not permitted to enter the city center where the monks live. After the bloody war with Praxus that ended Crystal City’s occupation of the continent, Crystal City has also barred any Praxians from crossing its borders. Geography: Crystal City is built into the Crystal Mountain Range with the city staggered at various heights based on the terrain. Nights are often cool even in summer while winters are long and heavy with snow. Crystal City is close enough to the base of the mountains to have a short growing season and cold hardy crops are grown in available space. Religion: As the sparkplace for the monotheistic Disciples of Primus religion, Crystal City accepts and trains new disciples every vorn. Applications have begun to drop off over the last few decacycles, prompting discussions of streamlining the visa process and revamping outreach programs. Economy: Crystal City’s economic stability has come under question in recent decacycles. As a city-state that relies primarily on tourism and tithing, the economy has begun to slump as fewer tourists arrive each vorn. Population: 700 Spoken Language: Iax, Prisus Official Language: Prisus Currency: Crystal City Coin Government: Theocracy World Council: Primus’ First Disciple, Lihtan Exports: Religious materials oOo Gygax Background: A city-state in the southern hemisphere, Gygax is bordered by Kalis, Iacon, Simfur, and the Pale Ocean. Gygax is best known for its unique architecture. As natural burrowers, most Gyish cities are below ground with histories that stretch back eons. As populations grow, the Gyish simply add new layers to their cities, burrowing deeper and deeper. As a result, the cities that are seen above ground are ancient mazes slowly being reclaimed by the forest around it. The bustling markets below ground can be a little claustrophobic with their narrow passages and low ceilings. With its plethora of stone deposits, the Gyish burrow cities are structurally sound and fully reinforced with modern technology. To accommodate tall, broad, and winged mechs, some shops have set up second locations above ground. Geography: Gygax is characterized by dense deciduous forests, mountains, rivers, and its black sand coastline. A quarter of the eastern forest has been rendered uninhabitable by a massive wildfire. Many Gyish from the region were forced to relocate to other cities. Structural engineers who ventured into the cities caught by the fire are still working out estimates for time and credits to make them safe. Religion: Few Gyish practice any form of religion. Those that do identify with a religion name Disciples of Primus, though remnants of the old Gyish religion are still visible in their burrow cities in the form of altars. There are small sects that still use the altars, though they have always been very private about their practice. But as fewer and fewer Gyish use religion, the sects are beginning to allow outsider ethnographers in to capture and preserve their ancient rituals. Economy: The eastern wildfire caused a massive recession in Gygax. As thousands were displaced and the cost for repairing the cities continues to climb. Gygax blames the ongoing civil war in Simfur for starting the fire and have demanded Simfur cover the cost for rebuilding. Tourism is still strong along the coastline, keeping Gygax from spiraling into economic depression and the city-state is doing more to promote other less visited regions to tourists. Population: 75 million Spoken Languages: Iax, Gyish, Siux Official Language: Gyish Currency: Gyish Bani Government: Chirocracy World Council Member: Thrasher Primary Exports: Stone, timber, fiber, animal products oOo Iacon Background: Iacon is the most industrialized city-state with border to border cities. At the center of the continent, Iacon is bordered by Praxus, Crystal City, Simfur, Gygax, and Kalis. With luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture, and tropical weather, Iacon is the top vacation destination for those with plenty of credits to spare. In a city dominated by skyscrapers, the tallest and most spectacular are the Crystal Towers where the ruling family lives. A true monarchy, the Primes trace their heritage back to Iacon’s ancient Crystal City occupation where the first Prime, a Disciple of Primus, was given the duchy to rule. After the collapse of the Crystal City occupation, the sitting Prime named themselves Monarch. Now, Iacon is leading the world in entertainment and technology. Geography: Once a sub-tropical forest, Iacon is now a jungle of skyscrapers. With rivers and a heavy rainy season the city-state has state of the art irrigation and flooding systems in place. There are still echoes of the natural world in the various animal parks scattered throughout the city-state and the Crystal Tower’s famous menagerie. Religion: Iacon still shares a close bond with Crystal City and many Iax name Disciples of Primus as their practicing religion. The relationship has become strained over the years as Crystal City becomes more assertive in how mechs should practice the Word of Primus. Economy: Iacon leads the continent in GDP. The net worth of the ruling family is more than the combined GDP of Ahnkmor, Kalis, and Polyhex. With no signs of slowing, the Iacon economy continues to steam forward with technological innovations and entertainment leading the way. Population: 112 million Spoken Languages: Iax, Gyish, Siux Official Language: Iax Currency: Iax Standard Credit Government: Monarchy World Council Member: Sentinel Prime Primary Exports: Entertainment, technology oOo Kalis Background: A city-state in the southwest, Kalis is bordered by Anhkmor, Crystal City, Iacon, Gygax, and the Pale Ocean. Kalis suffered the most under the Crystal City occupation with the monks conscripting them to the frontlines of their armies as they marched across the continent. The natural blades Kalis have on their joints and along their heads that they use for harvesting bark, leaves, and for trimming branches in their arboreal homes the Crystal City occupiers used as weapons. Making up the majority of the Crystal City army during the occupation decacycles, the population suffered heavy losses. Kalis make their homes in the towering trees that cover the city-state. Their homes and buildings living architecture built over the span of vorns as limbs and vines are carefully trained to create walls, doorways, and windows. Geography: The northern most point of Kalis that borders Ahnkmor is drier with shorter trees and thornier plants, but the rest of the city-state is lush tropical jungle that taper into a mix of deciduous and evergreen forests near the border of Gygax. The old growth jungle of Kalis is one of the few places on Cybertron that hasn’t been harvested for timber. A refuge for plants and animals that fled the development of Iacon, Kalis has an incredible array of flora and fauna. Religion: The native religion in Kalis is called Osisi. There are four different worlds that are all connected by a great tree. The first world exists in the roots of the tree where sparks are prepared for their journey. The second world is the mortal realm where the sparks are tested on the lessons they learned in the roots. The third world is in the branches of the tree where sparks are judged by the gods. And the fourth world sits at the very top of the tree where the gods reside. If the spark is judged to not have learned its lessons well, it is returned to the roots to try again. If a spark does well, it is welcomed into the godly world. Many of the details of the different worlds were lost during the Crystal City occupation, but enough survived in oral tradition that Osisi remains. Economy: Kalis is the poorest city-state. Lack of medical supplies enabled a pandemic to sweep through the city-state a decacycle ago killing tens of thousands before the World Council declared it an emergency and sent aid. With very little urban development, most Kalis survive as fruit and flower harvesters living in the traditional tribal lifestyle. Plans for developing the Kalis coastline for tourism have routinely fallen through from lack of funding. Poverty, starvation, and lingering fears over sickness keep most Cybertronians away Population: 10 million Spoken Languages: Kalish, Iax Official Language: Kalish Currency: Kalis Uryu Government: Gerontocracy World Council Member: Fuschia Primary Exports: Fruit, timber, houseplants oOo Kaon Background: The northernmost city-state, Kaon is sparsely populated like Ahnkmor. Known in ancient times for their fierce warriors and often barbaric practices, modern Kaon is known for its weapons manufacturing. With Praxus at its southern border and the other three sides bordered by the inhospitable Silver Sea, Kaon became impossible to reach by land once Praxus closed its borders. Without a warm water port, the only way to reach Kaon is with air transport. Nomadic tribes that follow the vast herds of jelen still populate the interior of Kaon, but roughly half of the population has relocated to the cities along the Praxus border such as Hazard where the manufacturing jobs are. Civil unrest has begun to take hold of the cities as more and more mechs move in making jobs harder to find and driving down wages. Geography: With dramatic fjords, snow capped mountains, and cold stretches of tundra, the interior of Kaon remains undeveloped. Steep cliffs and rocky shores make the long coastline unsuitable for shipping ports. The city-state spends half the vorn in darkness and the other half in light based on the axial tilt of the planet. The climate is easier to manage at the base of the North Praxus Mountain Range where the largest cities are. Religion: One of the only city-states not occupied by Crystal City, the Word of Primus has still made its mark on the city-state in the modern era. Very little is known about the traditional Kaonite religion, the nomadic tribes that practice it are difficult to find and not welcoming to visitors. Ancient logs from explorers note that living sacrifices were often involved with the larger rituals such as the descent into darkness and the return of the sun. Economy: Driven by weapons manufacturing, the Kaonite economy remains robust as they continue selling weapons to Simfur to fuel their civil war and other warring species. For those working in the factories, though, wages have begun to decline as the cost of living continues to rise. With more and more young mechs leaving their nomadic tribes and coming to the cities to engage with the modern world civil unrest has begun to grow. Revolutionaries have begun staging demonstrations; walkouts, shutdowns, and marches. The leader of the resistance is a young mech named Megatron. Population: 62 million Spoken Languages: Recki, Iax Official Language: Recki Currency: Kaonite Novac Government: Stratocracy World Council Member: Slick Primary Exports: Weapons oOo Polyhex Background: With the most warm water ports of any city-state, Polyhex is the shipping hub of the continent. Polyhexian sailing history stretches back eons. They were the first to circumnavigate the continent and discovered hundreds of smaller outlying islands where descendants of those early sailors still inhabit. At one point, the Polyhexian empire stretched up the eastern shoreline all the way to Praxian waters and up the western shore to the Silver Sea in northern Ahnkmor. As the Crystal City crusades marched across the continent, the Polyhexian empire was forced back until even they became occupied. Crystal City occupiers used Polyhexian seafaring knowledge to solidify their hold on their conquered lands, able to swiftly and efficiently transport soldiers anywhere on the continent. Polyhex was occupied again when the Iax monarchy deployed an army to seize Polyhexian ports during a dispute with Ahnkmor. A centicycle into the occupation, Iacon declared Polyhex a colony. Several attempts at revolution over the decacycles have resulted in tyrannical laws in Polyhex, enforced by Iax soldiers. Geography: Polyhex is the wettest of the city-states. Overrun with lakes, marshes, wetlands, rivers, streams, and oceanic tributaries the citizens of Polyhex live in partially flooded cities connected by a complex canal system. Highly social, Polyhexians live in large communities on the banks and shores of bodies of water. Several akaina off the southern coast is an archipelago historically claimed by Polyhex. Off the western coast the Polyhexian Cays have become a hotspot for revolutionaries. Religion: Between both the Crystal City occupation and the Iax colonization, very little Polyhexian tradition has survived. What traditions that have survived are those considered useful by the occupying forces such as ship building and star and tidal navigation. Economy: Iax uses Polyhex as its manufacturing center. Large tracts of marshes and wetlands have been cleared and built up to make room for warehouses and factories. Shipping is still the primary revenue for the city-state and as automation becomes more sophisticated dock work has pulled ahead in employment numbers. Many Polyhexians live below the poverty line but given their fluid communal living, homelessness is uncommon. Population: 24 million Spoken Languages: Teanga, Iax Official Language: Iax Currency: Government: Xenocracy World Council Member: Sapphire (Iax) Primary Exports: Manufactured goods, ships, assembled goods, cheap labor oOo Simfur Background: Under Crystal City occupation, Simfur was consolidated into one kingdom. After the collapse of the Crystal City empire, civil war broke out within the city-state as the wealthy and powerful fought for control. The result is that modern day Simfur is split into two kingdoms. In the southeast—with control of most of the coastline—is the Kingdom of Vepo. In the northwest is the Kingdom of Chrysos, which controls most of the mines and quarries as well as the border to Gygax and Iacon. For most of modern history, the two kingdoms have coexisted well enough, but with the unexpected and mysterious death of the Vepo monarch the city-state has once more plunged into civil war. Geography: Plains and deciduous forests make up the majority of Simfur. Much of the land is cultivated and before the civil war the coastal region was known for its sport fishing. With the war going into its seventh vorn and more and more Simfur becoming displaced, the World Council has stepped in and are trying to work out a peace agreement between the two kingdoms. Religion: In the Kingdom of Chrysos, the population practices the monarch’s chosen religion which for the past four generations has been Disciples of Primus. In the Kingdom of Vepo, the monarch is regarded as an avatar of Primus and worshipped as such. Crystal City has condemned Vepo for its heretical religion on several occasions and rumors abound that the monarch was assassinated by Disciples of Primus. Economy: The Kingdom of Chrysos has managed to keep its economy somewhat stable given its plentiful deposits of building stone and mines of precious stones and metals. The Kingdom of Vepo has begun to struggle as its primarily agricultural economy no longer has the hands needed to tend the land. Populations: Chrysos, 8 million/Vepo, 6 million Spoken Languages: Chrysos; Logia, Iax, Gyish/ Vepo; Frasi, Iax Official Languages: Chrysos, Logia/Vepo, Frasi Currencies: Chrysos, Crimat/Vepo, Kerm Governments: Monarchy World Council Members: Chrysos, Silverstrike/Vepo, Berm Primary Exports: Chrysos; building stone, precious stones, metals/Vepo; agricultural products, timber, animal products oOo Vos Background: Vos is an archipelago island nation northeast of Praxus. Made up of dozens of mid-size islands it is another city-state that escaped Crystal City occupation, simply by being out of reach. Vos, home of the seekers, also has a large Polyhexian population, most of which arrived during Crystal City’s failed attempts at invading the island. Vos is known for its luxury goods and ultra-wealthy citizens. While Vos might seem a place ripe for hedonia, strict laws and gruesome punishments keep out the excessive partiers. A selective visa process also makes access difficult to anyone without native ties. Vos is a sister city-state to Praxus and the only city-state to have any contact with the reclusive Praxians in eons. Geography: Blue lagoons, mountains, and dense forests make Vos an island paradise. The main island, N’Garep, is home to soaring skyscrapers and death defying walkways high above the forest canopy bridging buildings and crossing deep ravines. N’Garep is where most unwinged Vox make their homes and it acts as the financial center for the city-state. Winged Vox live on the more mountainous islands, making their homes in aeries cut into the mountains. The Polyhexian population is spread throughout the city-state along the shoreline and on small atolls where they primarily work as anglers and pearl divers. Religion: The native religion of Vox is Dewa, and much like the Ahnkmorish A’slaf, it focuses a great deal on ancestors and natural forces. The main Dewa deities are Angin, god of wind and Geni, goddess of fire. Both Angin and Geni are deities of life and kekacuauan—the idea of ordered chaos or freedom without negative repercussions. There are also Banyu, the goddess of water and Kuping, god of earth. Banyu and Kuping represent death and tawanan—too much order or limits and boundaries that wound the spirit. Economy: Vos is the wealthiest of the city-states with a per capita twice that of Iacon. Vos specializes in luxury goods, most famous being its high grade. There’s also fashion, polish, jewelry and accessories, furniture, and foods made from rare ingredients. But Vox don’t just cater to the wealthy, the foundation for many of their businesses rely on low income and middle-class necessities such as safety equipment, transport parts, and furniture. Population: 20 million Spoken Languages: Vox, Iax, Teanga, Kotoba Official Languages: Vox, Teanga Currency: Vox D’hu Government: Oligarchy World Council Member: Free Fall Primary Exports: Luxury goods oOo Praxus Background: Praxus was invaded, but not occupied, by Crystal City armies. The Praxian warrior class, known as Daninphyr, drove Crystal City out in a decisive battle that razed the fortified holy city to the ground. Many of the soldiers used in the Crystal City armies were conscripted slaves and captured revolutionaries, most of which had no families left to return to and so they settled in Praxus giving the city state and eclectic blend of culture and language. After the battle with Crystal City, Praxus withdrew from the world as the vacuum left by the slow collapse of the Crystal City Empire created warfare and chaos across the continent. Along land and sea, massive stone giants carved in the likeness of warriors guard the border. With the exception of Vos—who continue to trade with their sister city-state—no one has seen a Praxian since the stone giants appeared on the border. Geography: The largest of the city-states, Praxus encompasses an array of climates and environments; from sandstorms and deserts in the west to jungles and rocky coastlines in the east. Early Polyhexian sailors mapped the extensive Praxian coastline up to the Kaonite border where occasional ice flows were noted. Religion: What little is known about Praxian religion comes from Polyhexian explorers who traded frequently with Praxians. The explorers, unfortunately, were more concerned with the plentiful gems, precious metals, and stones than they were with Praxian society and religion. Their notes are incomplete and mention only briefly things that stood out to them, such as the belief that Daninphyr were demigods. Economy: The only city-state currently trading with Praxus is Vos.
