John Watson had a high threshold for terror. But he was not immune to fear and what it brought with it.

The way the black mood feels when it comes is hard for him to explain. What it feels like now, on the sofa, is like he's suspended between the light and the dark, the warmth and cold, with everything being tugged downward. If he moves at all, he might break free or completely submerge. He reckons it's too dangerous to try. So all he can do is wait for it to pass, or to consume him.

"Don't go into shock, obviously. Must be something in this ridiculous memory palace of yours that can calm you down," Mycroft had said. A retelling of the Mind Palace scene in His Last Vow, where Sherlock, searching for something to calm him through the shock, finds John Watson instead of Redbeard.

Missing scene from His Last Vow. After the unmasking at Leinster Gardens and subsequent confrontation at Baker Street, Sherlock winds up back in hospital. When he wakes up, John is there, and a bit not good. It's been a grueling week: Sherlock tries to make things right. Canon-compliant. No warnings, general pairings.

After the Baskerville disaster, John is having nightmares again. When he discovers Sherlock isn't sleeping, he assumes it's for the same reasons. But Sherlock's insomnia is for something different, and he's reluctant to say what. (Canon-compliant) (General)

When Sherlock returns to London after The Fall, there are two things he can't understand: why John was less than happy to learn he was alive, and why the silence in 221B can be so deafeningly loud. When past horrors and failures loop through the mind in vibrant technicolor, John Watson wonders if it's at all possible to stop the images. As always, Sherlock Holmes has a solution.

Set during "A Scandal in Belgravia," after Sherlock identifies Irene Adler's body at the morgue. There had been danger nights before, but never had they involved someone's death.
