Jesus tentatively leaned forward, careful not to startle Daryl. "I know she means the world to you," he said softly, then teasing, "Anyone with eyes knows that." He inched closer, meeting Daryl's eyes. "You don't have to answer, I just…" TRIGGER WARNING FOR: mentions of domestic abuse, child abuse, commitment issues, and insecurity.

"Why do you still insist on calling me a little shit?" Jesus had the audacity to ask one night, lying beside Daryl on his ratty bed in the Hilltop.

Daryl, of course, shrugged it off. "Ain't no such thing as too many," he always insisted, which was true. With Judith getting bigger every day - and with Maggie getting bigger every day - the extra squares were almost invaluable, but it didn't exactly explain why he came back with so many and why he only gave them to Jesus.

On his way, he met a handful of people - Rick and Michonne Grimes with their children, Glenn and Maggie Rhee and their two kids, Carol Peletier, Morgan Jones, Aaron and Eric Raleigh, Tara Chambler and Denise Cloyd - but none made so much of an impression on him as Paul Rovia, who called himself Jesus and, like Daryl, was running from his past.

(Were they friends? Boyfriends? Partners? Friends-with-benefits? Sometimes they held each other much longer than any platonic friends should, and sometimes they kissed each other, too, but neither of them discussed it with each other, and only a handful of people even knew about their… whatever they were.)

He watched how they each treated him: gently, slowly. Like he was a wild animal, ready to bolt the moment a twig snapped. He watched how he froze inside Tara's hug. He watched how he clenched his eyes shut when Michonne brought her hands to his face and kissed his cheek. But he also saw how Daryl dropped his anxieties when he and Rick stood face to face.

"Taking down all the dead makes me feel like," and he paused for a second, breath coming in short as he kicked down a pair of walkers before burying his heel in one of their skulls and his blade in the other's, before finishing, "I'm grinding for some massive boss level or something."

No one drank often. It wasn't a luxury they could typically afford. Drinking meant an inherent lowering of inhibitions and attentiveness. It meant slower reflexes and reaction time, and when death was only a second away on a good day, that wasn't a combination you wanted. But sometimes it was worth it.

He ducked behind an alley, a grin forming on his lips when he saw none other than the man he'd met the week before: Daryl Dixon, who threatened to knock him on his ass but in the same breath cooed lullabies to his niece; whose hard, calloused fingers locked around his throat when he thought Jesus was a threat but a second later combed downy-soft hair back on the little girl's head.
