I'd like to thank all of you who are just tuning in to our program today and say it's a real pleasure having you here. Today's program is brought to you by , and Gamma gulp beer. Welcome back to the Manatoc Fox variety hour! We're once again serving up a healthy heaping of Kneazle induced fun! Below are some likes, dislikes and general opinions on that which is Fanfiction. At this point I'm primarily Harry Potter based, but I'll read the odd one in another fandom. I enjoy: 1 Authors who take it slow. Its not a race people. If you want action, start at the action. If you don't start there don't rush it. It makes the story seem sloppy. 2: Canon storylines when dealing with sequels or prequels. If you want to do a life and times Marauder based fic, try to keep it canon. This makes sense. James didn't live, he was a total knob and they were friends with Peter. My personal favourite period pairing is Ted/Andromeda. I'm slowly developing one of my own, but it will be some time before it sees the light of day. 3: Reasons for changes. Let me explain: I am a firm adherent (as much as possible anyway) to the idea that Canon storyline is the way it was meant to be. For something to change later an action or event must precipitate that change. If you want to do a what if that is fine (what if Harry had three testicles etc.) but all changes from canon should be based from the point of divergence onwards. If your story starts in year 4 then the audience should assume that 1-3 happened the same unless the divergence happened around birth or some such. 4: Decent plot, with good characterizations. I've read some really decent plots in sideline pairings that were engaging and fun. I don't mind some OOC if it is explained well. Simply changing a character to suit your wants isn't my cup of tea. 5: My own story! Nothing quite like the feel of creating something even if slightly derivative. Please note, the next installment of the 'Kneazle' franchise is now online and updating, if somewhat slowly. Dislikes 1: Overall poor grammar. I don't begrudge people a few misspelled words here and there, I do it too. But for the love of god please proof read. If you can't proofread your own, get a beta or someone else to proof read for nothing else but grammar. Almost nothing makes me drop a story faster than poor grammar especially at the outset. 2: My summary sucks please read! No, I won't. If you can't write a decent summary why should I believe you can write a decent story? If you don't want a summary don't put one up, but they aren't that hard really folks Just a sentance or two nothing too tough. Just a hook. 3: Harems. Nothing against these stories, they just aren't my cup of tea. Nothing in the world of Naruto or Inuyasha or really any other anime/book I've read (save maybe Dune) lends its self to a credible harem fic. Girls don't share, and neither do boys. 4: Excessive Lemons. You want to put some smut in your story fine. It can be good, but really every other chapter folks? If its going to be book porn please put that at the beginning, if not keep them to tasteful and appropriate moments. 5: 13 year old's boinking. Thats right I just said 'boinking'. This particular piece of fiction is very common in Naruto ship fics when the one true pairing needs to be achieved before Shippuden. Come on guys 13 year olds doing the nasty is gross. Its worse when someone decides to do a lemon on it and it might be illegal (not really but all parties are not over 18. It has to be in there for movies so why not here?) Yes these are fictional characters, but really think about it in real life... gross. Really for some Harry Potter stuff a good teen age trist won't go amiss, but please keep it respectful. Harry doesn't have a clue about girls, so it isn't likely he's going to cause Ginny to explode with pleasure the first time is it? Please watch James Bond for ideas on how to do PG-13 lemons. There doesn't need to be graphic description and in most instances is better not to. 6: Crossovers that don't make sense. Naruto/Inuyasha good, Naruto/Harry Potter maybe, Naruto/DBZ not so much, DBZ/Harry Potter... Not happening. First fiction is up and complete. The next installment is now updating as well. Read and review. So, anyone want to take a swing at asnwering this one? Can anyone recommend a good time travel story? I've read a few, but nothing seems to be able to capture the true essence of what it would mean. It seems to either totally deviate or follow exactly the canon story line. I'm interested, so help a Fox out. Finally something I have to comment on. Super powered Harry through six months of training. I understand wanting to beef Harry up. He really is all things considered rather weak in canon. Heck my Harry is remarkably stronger if even through the calm use of detatched logic. However it bugs me when bing, bang, boom after six months Harry can duel Aurors and death eaters alike, run a four minute mile marathon, and the author insists on comparing him to a greek god! Yes six months is impressive. Much can be done in six months. However what seperates a good Auror from a dead Auror is experience which despite his multiple run ins Harry lacks. He simply can not go out and duel Dumbledore and WIN without serious experience. Old age and trickery will out do youth and enthusiasm every time. Also, giving Harry martial arts does not make him invincible. Also, no one person can train harry to be super or else they could just go kill Voldemort for him. Even in special forces there are multiple instructors. I will concede my Harry is a brawler. I make him able to overcome physically most of his peers. This is due to two things 1: His natural talent for it. 2: His lack of fear. Harry has no qualms about getting hurt and is an animal (you'll get the pun if you read my story!). However, as all students are in the first year... there isn't much they can do to each other. However, Malfoy is remarkably adept at the dark arts and can overcome bruce lee any day of the week from a distance. Please take these into consideration! I'm going to try not to make these mistakes in my story. |
