![]() Author has written 21 stories for Stargate: SG-1, Criminal Minds, Tangled, and Doctor Who. Hello! Sit down, please avoid the useless piles of junk in my bedroom, enjoy yourself! *Hands you a cup of tea* Thanks for stopping in. I'll introduce myself as Indigo Raine, penname of course. ;) I'm glad you decided to check out my profile! It's been a great couple of weeks as I've found myself recently fascinated with Doctor Who and the River/11 Ship. (I'm NOT a fangirl, I'm NOT a fangirl, I'm NOT... okay...maybe I am, a teeny-weeny-tiny bit!) I've been having hundreds of ideas for this fandom and I plan on writing ALL of them at one point or another. Useless and or obnoxious facts about myself and/or my life: - I was born on Gallifrey My writer personality: I'm extremely character driven. I listen to my characters and let them tell me what to do. I usually come up with characters and run with them before I even have a plot (in other words, a HUGE seat-of-the-pantser). Ideas hit me in the middle of the night and they will NOT let me fall asleep. I see my stories in images, not in words. They play out like a movie in my head and then I write down what I see. I swear I have absolutely NO control over my characters, so they tend to be (for fanfiction) quite themselves becuase they won't let me do anything OOC! I do have a sense of humor, and it will come across in some fics I write, but mostly I love to write hurt/comfort, angst, and things like that. Not my cup of tea: Smut, graphic violence/language, non-cannon character deaths (well, to be fair I don't even like CANNON character deaths), poor grammar/spelling, and summaries that say "I suck at summaries, but plz read anyway". Chat language in stories, Mary Sues/Gary Stus, any overly awesome character who says things that nobody would ever say and does things that are so over-the-top they'd never happen and seems to have no flaws (okay... so yeah, I basically just said Mary Sue twice). Mindless/Plotless fics, fics with no character development. XXX Writing Tips: Summary do's and don'ts:
2. DON'T give way the whole plot in your summary. Give people a teaser! Don't make it obvious either like "Are so and so going to get together?" Well...it's kind of obvious! If you're stuck on finding a summary (like I normally am) find a quote from your writing that kind of makes a seg-way into the story. 3. DO proofread your summary. Nobody will read a fic whose summary is riddled with errors and chat language, they'll assume the fic is like that too and move on. 4. DO put in tags like the pairing, special character (OC, etc), other things like AU, OOC, or any warnings you feel you should put. If you're going to suprise people, make it a pleasant surprise, not an unpleasant one. :) 5. DON'T put smileys in your summaries. Just don't. A/N do's and don'ts:
2. Page breaks of some sort before/after an A/N is nice. 3. DON'T put them in the middle of the story, I cannot stress this enough! General Writing Tips:
- Put it down, go for a walk, get a cup of tea, and come back to it! - Put your problem on a sticky note and post it to your wall, with it visible, you'll be thinking about it. - Go and watch the show/read the book/watch the movie! It'll help. Talk to other fans, search for prompts, anything to get your head back in the heads of the characters. - My favorite: to PREVENT writer's block, leave it off in the middle of the word! Then, you know exactly where you were going, a few keystrokes, and suddenly you're writing again! - Listen to some music that sets the mood, but don't get distracted by it! (I usually do) 2. If you procrastinate: - Butt in chair, hands on keyboard. - AND. Butt glue. ;) 3. Posting on a schedule: I cannot stress enough how important this is, for both you and the readers! If you procrastinate like I do, you will NEVER get anything done without a definite deadline which you're accountable to your readers for. Nothing helps you churn out the work like a deadline, and your readers will thank you for being reliable, trust me. 4. On editing: - Lock your inner editor out when you first start writing. No, literally. You run the risk of looking schizo, but it helps. Stand up, look over your shoulder, and say "Out." Open the door, usher your inner editor out, and then shut the door, sit down, and write. Maybe even turn off your spell check until you have a first draft. - Once that first draft is complete, turn on your spell check, read it through. - Read it through again. - And again. - One more time. - Out loud. - To your teddy bear. - To your dog. - To your siblings. - To whatever other relatives/spouses/neighbors/garbage-men/mail-men you can get a hold of. - Get up, walk away for a day, and then come back to it and read it through again with new eyes. - Rinse and repeat at least once. You'll still have the occasional error. 5. On getting more reviews: - Do unto others as you would have them do to you. (Imagine if all of did this? Think of all the reviews then! Novel idea, eh?) - DON'T hold fics hostage for reviews, it's childish. - DON'T beg for reviews. Just ask nicely. :) - If you don't get any, or you only get a few, try not to be dissapointed, and DON'T stop writing! If you stop, then you REALLY won't get any reviews! - If you get flames, take a deep breath, try to find a good chunk of advice in there or something you could improve on, and then walk away and learn from the experience. Keep writing. If you want any more advice, or ideas for more tips, give me a PM and I'll be happy to oblige.
The Story Corner
Currently, I'm in the middle of a novel-length work called Should Have Never Been. It's going to be quite long, with all sorts of plot twists and turns and interesting secrets. I'm not a regular updater, but I will be back to some sort of updating schedule once school is out and my life is less crazy. My main fandom is Doctor Who, for the sheer possibilities of Fanfics. I don't write or read smut/slash, so you don't have to worry about finding that in my writing. While I do use some language, I don't use a lot of it, and it's really only there to pack a punch when needed. I don't just throw it around, because I don't in my life, and I know that words have powerful meaning and should be used appropriately. XXX I'm American, I'm a Christian, and all the glory for any good fics should always go to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Love you all! Thanks for checking out my profile, and I hope to see you again soon! If you have any questions, comments, or just want to chat, I'm only a PM away, I'll reply as soon as I can. Well anyway, that's all there is to know about me, (all the interesting bits, anyway). I'm glad you stopped in to check out my profile! Oh! It's raining outside! Damn Oregon weather! *hands you Mary Poppins' umbrella* there you go! Have a nice walk home, I'd give you a ride but I'm afraid my TARDIS is out of commission at the moment. Bye! - Indigo xxx |
