![]() Author has written 23 stories for Twilight, Hunger Games, and Fifty Shades Trilogy. Knowledge of your characters also emerges the way a Polaroid develops: it takes time for you to know them. One image that helps me begin to know the people in my fiction is something a friend once told me. She said that every single one of us at birth is given an emotional acre all our own. You get one, your awful Uncle Phil gets one, I get one, Tricia Nixon gets one, everyone gets one. And as long as you don't hurt anyone, you really get to do with your acre as you please. You can plant fruit trees or flowers or alphabetized rows of vegetables, or nothing at all. If you want your acre to look like a giant garage sale, or an auto-wrecking yard, that's what you get to do with it. There's a fence around your acre, though, with a gate, and if people keep coming onto your land and sliming it or trying to get you to do what they think is right, you get to ask them to leave. And they have to go, because this is your acre. By the same token, each of your characters has an emotional acre that they tend, or don't tend in certain specific ways. One of the things you want to discover as you start out is what each person's acre looks like. What is the person growing, and what sort of shape is the land in? This knowledge may not show up per se in what you write, but the point is you need to find out as much as possible about the interior life of the people you are working with. —Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life
Thank you for joining me on their acres. Let us go through their gates together, and hope we aren't thrown out. In 2009, I fell in love with a different moody vampire than it seems everybody else did, and ten years later, I am still as hopelessly head over heels for him as I was that first moment that Bella laid eyes on a centuries-old wooden cross at the top of the stairs at that big house next to the Sol Duc. These days, I still enjoy writing fic but I post only completed things on FFnet so that I don't leave anyone hanging when my work inevitably gets in the way. At times, I post draftier things on my website for those who are dedicated enough to go there and willing to be VERY patient. But finished things will always end up here. For personal reasons, I've deleted most of my Twilight fandom social media and community accounts. But you can find me on tumblr both as myself () and as Carlisle (), and both get fed to twitter (@gisellelx and @askccullen). Ebooks, PDFs, and my more detailed author's notes for each of my fics (as well as just random, impassioned thoughts) are on my website, . Thank you for reading. |
