Also, I was very disappointed in how the story ended. I feel like the plot went off the rails, particularly in regards to Watanuki's characterization. I also think that the plot may still have been saved, but the choice to end the series the way it was ended, WHEN it was ended, was a bad one that left too much unexplained. I expect a certain amount of closure at the end of a long story and xxxHolic left me severely underwhelmed. I lost a lot of respect for CLAMP due to this, which makes me sad. It's like outgrowing a friend you no longer relate to, but still want to think well of. Some other thoughts: I think absolutely any series in existence can be crossed over with Stargate: SG-1. The thought of Daniel Jackson meeting Nico Robin gives me chills, because it would be epic. I think Mary Sue characters are a sign of immaturity, but can, with time, be outgrown. As a corollary, I think the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer is one of the most heinous examples of a popular Mary Sue story EVER. You will never convince me otherwise. The only thing I admire about Twilight is that Stephanie Meyer made a sh!tload of money off of it. The kind of fanfiction stories I like best are the ones that add to the mythology of a series, not change it. The more plausibly a fanfic can fit into a series' canon, the more I like it. I still like shipping fics (within reason) or alternate realities (of the "what if" variety), but to me, the best indication of a love and respect for the source material is to make it richer, not re-invent it as something it was never intended to be. One Piece is about a pirate crew's adventure on the high seas of a fantastic world, not a bunch of misfits at a high school on Earth. On the other hand, X-Men: Evolution is about a misfit group of teenagers attending high school, not pirates. There's a place for everything. |
