I’m one of those people for whom Bobby Goren is an acquired taste. In 2006, as a latecomer to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” watching every episode I could on the USA Network, I was often disappointed in the opening seconds when I realized it was “Criminal Intent” instead of SVU. There was that big guy with the stammer who kept berating people again. I wanted to watch Stabler and Benson and enjoy the way they interacted as they solved terrible crimes.

But somewhere along the line, I realized that as I was waiting for the next episode of SVU to start, I was enjoying watching the big guy nail the bad guys. His behavior grew familiar. His stammer and shyness were endearing. And, well, he was pretty doggone cute. Before I knew it, I was disappointed when it was SVU instead of CI. I wanted to watch Goren and Eames and enjoy the way they interacted as they solved fascinating crimes.

I work on the copy desk at the newspaper in Austin, Texas. I’m an Army brat, growing up mostly in the South. I’m very serious about my spiritual life. And I am a big sports fan, as you probably guessed if you’ve read much of “Holding Court.” I play city league softball, participate in fantasy baseball and follow several favorites, including the University of Texas football and baseball teams, Duke basketball, the Green Bay Packers, any NASCAR team employing Steve Hmiel and a number of major-league baseball teams, led by the Yankees, Braves and Dodgers.

The only other fan fiction I’ve written (not on the Net) has featured my all-time hero, Col. Joe Gallagher in “12 O’Clock High,” a 1960s TV show about B-17s in World War II. Other favorites include Mikhail Baryshnikov, James Bond movies with Sean Connery, spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood, the 1960s TV show “Naked City” (starring Paul Burke, who also played my man Gallagher) and Russian ice skaters Artur Dmitriev and Alexi Yagudin.

I guess my tastes are eclectic. I hope Bobby Goren would approve!
