Girls Harry Potter Fan 1994's grammar rants: Homophones. I get it, they're hard and stuff. But when they're not used properly in a story, it bugs me to no end. For example, however much Robin may love Starfire, he is not going to touch anything of hers that is supposed to go in a toilet. So, "waist," please, not "waste." Rushing. I have the worst problems with it. I've got no advice, other than rereading and having someone else read it over, because I've got no idea what to do about it. I understand the problem, though. It's hard to not rush when you've got a great idea and are trying to get it all down before you lose it. With speling, I totalee simphethise. I'm horibel att itt. Capitalization and punctuation, not so much. Capitalize the first letter of every sentence and proper nouns. The letter "I" by itself is always capitalized. Use periods at the end of every sentence, space out your words, quotes around dialogue, and commas after every item in a list (like this one). Repetition, repetition, repetition! I have problems with that, too, especially the word "said." But, at the risk of sounding hypocritical, it gets really annoying in stories. That's what synonyms are for... Wordiness! Please stop with the "Robin took her hand and her hand was in his and then they held hands and a smile was made on her face and his face and everything was okay." Really? "Robin grabbed her hand. "It's going to be okay," he whispered, smiling at her." Wasn't that like ten thousand words shorter? Didn't it get the point across without annoying the readers half to death? Keep your ideas as short as they need to be. Word choice. When you're writing a story, there are things you have to consider about the wording you choose. For example, Starfire will never, EVER say "y'all better get outside!" Similarly, the narrator, especially in any form of third person, should not be using slang. So, no "Beast Boy didn't really wanna do the dishes." Background knowledge. When you're writing about something you know nothing about, it shows. I know I've done this quite a few times (Wikipedia is my BFF) and I read over those stories and have to fight the urge to delete them. If you don't know anything about...say, math, do not put Dick and Kory in some sort of math class at any point in your story! It makes the characters and, more often than not, the author look stupid. Believe me, I know. The AU Titans will not be learning how to multiply in their senior year. That's it for now. If you spot any of these problems in my stories, please let me know so I won't make the same mistake next time! I'd also be happy to check over any of your stories. There aren't a whole lot of stories that I can say I'm glad I wrote, but...the few that I'm proud of, if you're not sure which ones to read, are Lost Without You, Forgive And Forget, Dear Starfire, Remembered, Cold Day, Don't Make Me Laugh, Randomness, Pen Pal, Trapped In An Ice Cave, and Saturday School (the revised version). For Teen Titans. iCarly-wise, I think iLove Him, iAm Not Weak, iDo, and iHope This Works are a few of my best. PLEASE check out my fav authors/stories. I'm sure you won't be disappointed! They're all awesome! |
