Now, fan fiction... Where do I start?

My first encounter with fan fiction was in the Star Trek fandom. It was way before anyone even knew what the internet was. Fan fiction was then published in printed fan magazines or self-published fan booklets. (And, yes, I am that old.) This was years before I started writing fan fiction myself. I don't actually (and this is kinda sad) remember the first fanfic I've written. I have vague recollections about a bad X-Files parody, but there was also this collection of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine character stories that I was planning to write with a friend of mine. I think I managed to finish the Sisko one and start on the Odo one, but that's as far as it went. And it weirds me out to think that I wrote them in German. But back then, my English wasn't good enough to say what I wanted to say and make it sound halfway eloquent.

My first real ventures into fan fiction started when I became a fan of Early Edition. Finally a show where I could write without having to look up technical details in a fake encyclopedia or invent settings that didn't actually insist in the real world (at least not for another 300 years). And I felt good enough about those to publish them online. The next show I became enamored enough with to want to write for was Roswell. Though my Roswell and Early Edition stories... they're so old, and I was young and inexperienced. I kinda wanna rewrite them when I read them now. I used to be involved in a project called Roswell - What Might Have Been. I'm not writing for it anymore, but Joan and Erica are carrying on the legacy. They do great work. Another big TV show love of mine is Joan of Arcadia. I fell for that show like I'd never fallen for anything, more specifically for Adam and Joan. I've been writing so many stories, I feel like I know those two characters better than even the show's writers. This epic story, Butterflies, that I was co-writing with my friend Deb, is the longest thing I've ever written. 500 pages. If you wanna pick one story of mine that you wanna read, I suggest you pick that one. And bring time--lots of it!

I've also written Michael/Sara Prison Break stories, but all my favorite shows tend to get cancelled way too soon. While it was fun playing in the PB sandbox, to tell you the truth, I don't think I'm gonna write much more in that fandom.

James Cameron's AVATAR came along in late 2009, and like all fandoms that really draw me in, I started writing in this universe too. However, I was always more fascinated with the human aspect of the characters than the Na'vi part of the movie.

The came this sweet, little show on USA Network, called White Collar. And the muse was running circles in my head for a while. Unfortunately, IMHO the show kinda went downhill after season three, so by season five, my interest had dwindled to a trickle.

Among other current interests is the fantastic Canadian TV show ReGenesis that is every molecular biologist's dream. Sadly, the fandom's pretty much dead, but I've written a few short pieces, and a long one that I don't dare put out there because I can't find a beta-reader for it. More recent fandoms that got me into fanfic writing again are Sherlock, Dominion, and Netflix's Daredevil.
