After being whacked over the head by a deranged simulant on an abandoned ship, Lister wakes up to find that he is a hologram.

AU Rimmer comes out of stasis one day to find that the entire crew are dead and he is three million years away from home. To make matters even more complicated, Kochanski is the one brought back as the ship's hologram.
