Author has written 2 stories for Fate/stay night, and Dresden Files. Thoughts on FanFiction: I find FanFiction to be an interesting idea. Not the concept of it in general as that makes plenty of sense. Simply write a story using characters that already exist. It gives rise to some great creativity, and also some not so great creativity, but hey that's what free access is all about right? I honestly can't tell which category I fall into, not that I really want to know all that much. But I digress, so I'll get back to my point. FanFiction presents a unique opportunity for character exploration that you don't find in other places and it is this that I find interesting. Setting aside stories where the author makes no effort to write in character at all (i.e. a clearly OOC story), every FanFiction adds a new facet to an old character. I don't mean that all stories should be considered 'canon' or part of a given character. It is just that when writing a story, each author has their own opinion/view on just how the characters they are writing will act and just who each 'character' is exactly. So when people read these stories they are shown the author's interpretation of a character. This interpretation may conflict, mesh with, or be very similar to what the reader has already decided on their own, but it is still an opportunity. An opportunity to look at a character in a new light, to expand our ways of thinking about the character and see how different people might view them. Some people might argue that this detracts from the way that the original creator of the character might have wanted them to be, but I disagree. With the creation of many different interpretations of a character, all based off the same original source, a much larger picture can be formed. The character can really come alive in the minds of readers as more and more ideas about who the character is are presented. Will some of these stories conflict with one another? Most definitely. Will others be eerily similar? Indeed. But with such a great pool of information the readers, and the authors, are given such an open resource to form their own views on just who a character is. People can decide if the way a character acts in a specific story fits the character or not. By doing this many times the definition of the character can continue to grow and be unique to each person. I don't mean to be so long winded. This topic is just difficult to put into words for me. No matter your opinion on the subject I hope everyone who reads this has found at least one FanFiction in which a character has gone beyond canon and still seemed to fit themselves perfectly. I know I have found several and that just speaks highly about some of the talented people on this site. Anyway, on to other things. My Writing: I would like to be a writer. Unfortunately a lot of things in my life get in the way of that. A particular offender is my own laziness. But hey I'll still try now and again. Please let me know what you think of it if you have the time. My Stories: The Way to the Clocktower's Heart... Update (5/28/19): This is what I get for trying to write something that I had no original plans for. It will be finished, but there are no guarantees on length or quality. What They See Misc. Thoughts: "Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts." If you don't know who said this quote you should read a certain book by Patrick Rothfuss. |
