![]() Constant reader. Massive fan of Supernatural. Public servant. Old enough to know better. Love chocolate. Always looking for the best stories I can find on my favourite show. That's about all anyone needs to know :P A bit about the community Unique & Unforgettable... Supernatural is my fandom of choice, but the stories I've collected on the community and in my Favourites list tend to have a tight criteria indeed. They are the stories that show Dean and Sam, John, Bobby and the rest of the Supernatural ensemble in the way I have come to love them in the first four seasons of the series. I wish the writers of the series had shown the same care, talent and respect for these characters as the writers here have done...it would be a far different television show if that were the case. Every story is of publishable quality by writers who know the story and the characters, have wonderful imaginations, a lot of life experience and are exceptionally skilled in the craft of writing. That might seem unnecessarily anal to some. I am sure there are a lot of good story ideas out there, but my perspective is if the idea isn't expressed well enough, then it's just an idea, not a story. Stories require a beginning, a middle and an end. They require a meaning and a resolution. As Chuck once commented...Any chapped-ass monkey with a keyboard can poop out a beginning, but endings are impossible. They aren't, of course. They are just hard to do well. The stories here have all that and a whole lot more. There are no stories held in the community where character -isms are a replacement for knowing the characters thoroughly and well. More than one 'bitch' or 'jerk' in a story guarantees it won't be on this community. As real fans are well aware, those -isms didn't occur every episode or even every few episodes. They were occasional. Not constant. The same goes for those authors who believe the car is actually named 'Baby'. Watch the episodes again - at least until the series' writers started reading fan-fiction as their source instead of watching the seasons - and you'll notice that Dean uses the endearment as just that, an endearment, not a name. For the same reasons, the mystical brotherly bond does not make an appearance in the stories I've collected. There is undoubtedly a bond between the characters of Sam and Dean Winchester; they're brothers and they've grown up fighting side-by-side and occasionally each other. But it's a human bond, as much from their foxhole mentality as their upbringing, not a magical one. As Mr Jensen Ackles and Mr Jared Padalecki pointed out in an interview with BuddyTV in 2013 : “There’s a scene where something’s said, like, well, the brothers have each other and that’s what counts, right?” Jensen says, adding “And then it’s like, yeah, but the brothers are constantly lying to each other, hiding things from each other –” “Yeah, that’s what it is,” Jared interjects as Jensen flops back into his chair. “There’s a line later where they’re talk about how the brothers comfort each other and we’re like – uh, I dunno that the brothers necessarily comfort each other –” Jensen starts laughing. “They’re kind of like…pushing each other, killing each other, lying to each other, bringing each other back –” Jared continues. “Maybe in fan-fiction, but not, uh –” Jensen interrupts, shaking his head. “Yeah, not...in...in,” Jared says, trying to think of the right words. “Not in the real world,” Jensen suggests. “Not in the real, fake world of Supernatural,” Jared adds. They're right too, although most fans have blithely ignored this interview. In the series, at least up until season 6, there was no suggestion of a magical brotherly bond. Just two brothers. My preference is to ignore fan wishful thinking and stick to the way the series plays out. If you enjoy the characters more than the actors, if you liked the gritty feel to the first three seasons and enjoy the supernatural aspects as much as everything else, if you're looking for stories that are extremely well-written, showing insight and imagination, knowledge and experience and skill, well those are the stories I'm looking for too and they're the ones I've collected for the community. If you know of any more like these, please don't hesitate to PM me with the details! “When I get a little money, I buy books. If any is left, I buy food and clothes.” — Erasmus “We don’t need a list of rights and wrongs, tables of dos and don’ts: we need books, time, and silence. Thou shalt not is soon forgotten, but Once upon a time lasts forever.” — Philip Pullman “If one reads enough books one has a fighting chance. Or better, one’s chances of survival increase with each book one reads.” — Sherman Alexie “Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another’s skin, another’s voice, another’s soul.” — Joyce Carol Oates “You should never read just for “enjoyment.” Read to make yourself smarter! Less judgmental. More apt to understand your friends’ insane behavior, or better yet, your own. Pick “hard books.” Ones you have to concentrate on while reading. And for god’s sake, don’t let me ever hear you say, “I can’t read fiction. I only have time for the truth.” Fiction is the truth, fool! Ever hear of “literature”? That means fiction, too, stupid.” — John Waters “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” – Ernest Hemingway “What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.” — Anne Lamott “I am simply a ‘book drunkard.’ Books have the same irresistible temptation for me that liquor has for its devotee. I cannot withstand them.” — L.M. Montgomery “If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr Seuss “A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.” “If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.” For readers and writers who love the series of Supernatural and want to talk to other like-minded fans, Heavenli24's new forum Supernatural Writer's Room is now open for business. Everyone is welcome and speaking personally and as a reader, not a writer, I've been delighted to be able to discuss stories, ideas and the episodes, characters and historical canon of the series with people who really care about their writing and reading of fan fiction stories. Just click on the link to join in! *NEWS* Are you a writer who wants to get more readers and feedback on your stories? Are you a reader who's trying to find more great stories to read? Do you have the time to read and judge stories on their entertainment, readability, characterisation and quality? If so, you'll be interested in a new forum - the Supernatural Fan Fiction Monthly Awards is a monthly fan fiction writing competition. Three sections and twelve categories include stories from 100-word drabbles to full-length novels and covering every genre from case fic adventures to romantic slash, horror and comedies. Anyone, even those of us who don't write and read, read, read, can nominate a much-loved story (with the writer's agreement) and all winners will be in a new Community (Supernatural Fan Fiction Awards) keeping great stories together in one location. All stories nominated must be complete and well-presented and well-written. Popular voting will be available on each nomination as well. The Awards forum is looking for judges and if you're interested, just PM BlackIceWitch for the details. I think it's a great idea to build bigger readerships for stories and to help readers find better-quality stories on the site! And something I've been thinking about while searching for wonderful stories for the community Unique & Unforgettable...
