Author has written 16 stories for Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. MY THEORY ON SLASHOkay this is in my mind why we all love to write/read slash. In a way, slash is similar to Mary Sue fics, although I think it is more developed and mature. A Mary Sue, being a self insert character, is a way to have romance with a favorite character who (in the case of a character such as Jack Sparrow or Legolas) does not have a romantic interest in canon. Therefore authors put themselves in that place. Now slash is similar, but by all means not the same. Slash works two ways. The first, is the one similar to Mary Sues. We, as authors, want our beloved single characters to have someone to love. But we don't want to commit the crime of the dreaded Mary Sue. So we do the next best thing. We use an already existant character, even if this character is the same gender (in the case of Jack Sparrow maybe Will Turner perhaps, and maybe Aragorn for Legolas). The second reason is for a character such as Aragorn. Here's an example: You love Aragorn dearly as a character, and want to write some sort of romance with him. But, you remind yourself, he already has someome, Arwen. You could write an Aragorn/Arwen story, but that is actually canon and therefore not as interesting as you would like. You look for another female character, but in Lord of the Rings, all the female characters we know and love already have romantic interests. Hmm... You could create your own woman, your own she-elf. But again, that would fall under the category of Mary Sue, which you don't want to do. And then there's Legolas for example, who again, has no one romantically. His character is canon, and he has already been developed. Even better, the two know and love each other through a bond of fellowship. (And both are pretty good lookers too..) So you choose slash. There is nothing wrong with this, hell you may not even like the idea of homosexual relationships. Although you don't think it's wrong when it happens between two characters you know and love. Think of it as a way to show your love of characters through each other. And of course that is how I personally see it. You may agree or disagree, but I think this is the basis on slash. You may think this is rediculous. You're right, it probably is. But hey, it's by opinion. Now for the real bio... Just your average student with a love of fanfiction, preferablely slash. My favorite sections are Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Final Fantasy X, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Yeah, I got some random intrests but it's all good. My favorite couples are (not all of them slash, mind you): Frodo/Sam (my new fetish.. *cackles* too cute. Check out Ivory-Bride for some awesome stories) Aragorn/Legolas (THROUGH BITTER CHAINS. Go read that.. NOW. Rhysenn is a god.) Harry/Draco (you MUST read these two stories if you love this pairing: Irresistible Poison by Rhysenn, and Moon-Kissed) Remus/Sirius (they were made for each other you know.) Remus/Serverus (Read Beneath the Silk by ArchArtist/writer, Mourning by Selke, and Lumus, Lupus by damsel13) Ron/Harry (If you consider liking one story liking the whole pairing... Read The Mirror Never Lies again, by Rhysenn. She'll convert you, I promise) Jack/Bill (Hmm.. I wonder who writes about that... :P) Jack/Will (Haldir Fancier's got some great stuff for these two) Jack/Elizabeth Auron/Rikku (or at least I used to... a 15 year old girl and a 36 or something year old man... just a little wrong. And you people say slash is twisted!) So if you have a fic or know of a fic that's well written containing those pairings send me an email and I'd love to read it! And hey I got my first flame today! (1/4/04) I feel like a real author now!... haha Updates: (as of 4/13/04) I am still here for my older stories, I swear! I know it's been a while, as always, but its lax season and i have practice every day etc... i don't have that much free time. BUT... I *promise* that eventually they will be finished, i just can't guarantee when. Right now I've turned to Lord of the Rings, considering Return of the King came out and all. LotR was my first writing obsession, so I'm taking a break and returning to it. It's quite fun. Just remember I haven't given up. Past the Horizon's almost done anyway. Boy you guys are gonna hate me...O:) So again if you do happen to read my stories... I (just like about every other author on the planet..) love to hear feedback, whether good or bad. I used to never review, but I'm getting into it and it leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling cuz you know you made someone happy with just a few words. So take a second and review my stuff. I'll love it! ((just know that I do write slash so uh, my motto is: don't like, don't read.)) As of 4/18/04, I am revisiting my various fandoms through drabbles. It is a quite interesting project - trying to convey a message in such limited circumstances. Please review and tell me how I do. |
