Influences
Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
This book has influenced my life too much not to creep into my writing. I can never look at foxes, or wheat, or sand, or stars ever the same way again.
Christopher Moore
Specifically 'A Dirty Job', though I love Lamb and many of his other works as well.
Miranda July
'No one belongs here more than you' broke my heart more acutely than anything I've ever read (aside from Le Petit Prince, of course). Her frankness is so refreshing and I feel like anyone else who writes contemporary fiction should realize that she exemplifies us more than anything else right now.
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
While I do love HP, the Bartimaeus Trilogy is just so much smarter (and I don't mean that in a pretentious way). Magic theory combined with adolescence and high politics.
Final Fantasy
As hilariously embarrassing as it is, even in my original fiction (which doesn't typically include anything fantasy), somehow FF tropes show up and I often don't realize it. Just goes to show how much I've internalized some of the games - this especially goes for FFVIII and FFVII.
The Adventures of Pete and Pete
Similarly to Miranda July, I feel like this show speaks almost directly to my aesthetic. Suburbia, desperate loneliness, severe dorkage, sparkling moments of severely eccentrism.
Brick by Ben Folds Five
Don't know how many times I listened to this song while writing. I consider it the official soundtrack to 'Chocolate Chip' and 'Ice Cream in December'.
