This story is a POV from Captain Stanley's wife during the first few chapters of my story Someone to Watch Over Me.

I do not own anyone or anything and I make nothing on my writing. It's all for fun.

This story is based on the Clay Aiken song Measure of a Man. All lyrics are in italics. Side note: If you can get on youtube, typee in Emergency Music Video and it should be the first video up. Someone put pics from the show to this song. So enjoy, it is very good!

She found him in the den, asleep at his desk, dried tears staining his cheeks. The pain of the loss of one of his men was eating at him. He was still with her, thank god.

If one day you discover him, broken down, he's lost everything. No cars, no fancy clothes to make him who he's not. The womean at his side is all that he's got.

Her heart ached for the man whose life was lost. He proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he loved what he did by giving the ultimate sacrifice.

Why do you ask him, move heaven and earth, to prove his love has worth?

She sat down beside her husband, her arm sliding in the crook of his arm. She rested her head on his shoulder. He never woke up. She knew in her heart her husband and the other men did everything they could to save one of their own. They were the bravest men she had the privilege of knowing.

Would he walk on water, would he run through fire, would he stand before you, when its down to the wire, would he give his life up, to be all he can? Is that, is that, is that how you measure a man?

She knew that some people never appreciate what the guys did, the extent of their love. The man who died had a family. His wife knew what it meant to be a fireman's wife. He truly loved her, sometimes that was all he could give to her.

If by chance all he had to give you, was three words wrapped around your finger, would that be deep enough at the end of everyday?

She knew JoAnne would be able to stand strong; she was that kind of person. Roy always saved his love for her. Emily sighed, lifting her head from her husband's shoulder. She knew their love was as deep as Roy and JoAnne's was. She loved her husband so much.

He never gives up, lets go of his dream, his world goes around for his one true belief.

Now that Roy was gone, she knew her husband just might not be the same. But the Hank Stanley she knew and married would never give up.

She felt him stir slightly. She wiped the tears out from his eyes as they began to sting hers. She knew he had tough times ahead, but he was strong. That was the true measure of a man.
