Reviews for Gowns by Newkirk
Abracadebra chapter 1 . 7/8/2018
This is a really first-rate snippet. You have Newkirk perfectly in character - grouchy, complaining, and resilient. They way you had him peering to see Kinch move out of sight before he gave into his real feelings was classic example of how to "show, don't tell." You accomplished so much with very few words! I would love to see you build this out into a full story.

I was really pleased that you chose this episode to expound on, because it has always intrigued me. It is quite amazing that Newkirk is simply expected to produce not one but two wedding gowns. It's equally amazing that he subsumes himself completely to LeBeau's (admittedly delightful) antics. There's LeBeau in the foreground, chewing up the scenery, while Newkirk labors in silence in the background. It really begs for a retelling from Newkirk's point of view!
Visage chapter 1 . 7/1/2018
What a great little story, I don't know how I missed it before! You have such a natural narrative voice that is such a pleasure to read! This is a perfect picture of Newkirk's character (at least my own take on him). Lots of big talk, sarcasm and complaining, but always going far above and beyond to make sure the Heroes succeed. You said so much in only a few words, I really liked your descriptions. The moment when he was left alone was perfect. Thank you so much for sharing!

lots of work needs to be done...especially if it is two wedding dresses. A lesson in lack of appreciation, and I have to feel for Newkirk here.

Wish there was more! Very good!
Signy1 chapter 1 . 11/28/2017
Awww... that is absolutely beautiful. Well done! And you're absolutely right; there is no way in the world that anyone could hand-sew two wedding dresses in a night.

I always felt kind of sorry for Newkirk in that episode, myself. All the work, none of the credit, and the mere idea of fitting a dress on Schultz should have qualified him for a medal, a promotion, and quite possibly a lot of therapy. And not just in that one episode, actually. Think about it- when Hogan needs someone to do something cultural, it's always LeBeau. If it's something solidly middle class, it's Carter. Newkirk gets to be the kleptomaniac and all the other disreputable ones. A bit hurtful, no?

Poor Newkirk. He does all the work and Lebeau gets all the credit:(
