They conceal their self-loathing behind a layer of arrogance, which itself is hidden by more self-loathing and existential despair. They know that they will fade into the void, their life having amounted to nothing, because when all is said and done, a person's passion may be nothing more than a silly pipe dream, and it will never change the terrible, terrible world in which we live.
