Jaune idly hummed to himself, a low tune that had a decent flow to it. It was one from Earth, some one that he didn't exactly remember the name to but it was stuck in his head nonetheless.
Yang was silent, focused intently on trying to recognize the song Jaune was humming. She couldn't however, and ended up asking him. "What is that song?" Her face seemed perplexed, confused but curious.
A wave of panic came over Jaune before he found the obvious answer. "I made it. Made it up, at least, it's a hobby of mine. I haven't had the motivation to put it out." He shrugged lightly, pausing and glancing around before taking a left. William was good with maps, so he was grateful for his expertise.
"Oh? Can I hear it then, hotshot? I'm sure it's just as bad as it sounds." She grinned at him, challenging him openly. He scoffed and smirked back at her, breaking into a chorus.
"Borous meetcha maker! Ohhhhh I'll tell you later. It seems that this scene has us careening down an elevatah." Jaune made the motion of falling backwards, catching himself by twirling his momentum and standing up back straight. He started walking backwards.
"Must've been dreeeeeaming that we'd make a clean escape and I doubt that one machine here will make it past the regulator." His words bled together with an astonishing flow, well crafted even if the tune didn't have the music behind it. It told a story, and that Yang had to realize, and shifted her focus on the lyrics themselves as she laughed softly. She continues to follow the man full of surprises.
"I swear we've never had this many levels, wheres the escavatah? What's so scary about a library and a record player? Thought I'd find an angel in a basement more dilapidated, this is kinda tasteful, tell me Alice who's ya decoratah?" He made a gesture of a photo frame, moving to her other side and making finger guns towards her.
"I never make a lady wait I guess you could say that I'm a playah! Angel wants a date and I'd really hate to aggravate her. Borous don'tcha worry I would never let her separate us! Hold it where'd ya go? Damn guess I need to go save ya.." His smile turned into a faux frown, and Yang nodded. So far, he and a buddy fell down an elevator. Crazy woman needed a date but she kidnapped friend. Yang was smarter than she looked.
"Alice thinks that hacking up my pal is gonna medicate her. Fallacy! The treatment that this gal would need is ahn eraser. Rap against an Animator? Alice get back on your paper. My rhyming on the multiplane, my lyrics work on several layahs." Yang widened her eyes, but was confused on what a multiplane was.
Jaune ceased his tune and stepped inside the repository, looking around before making his order. A laptop and a T.V. he paid for out of his school allocated funding, with Yang persuading him to stop being a chivalrous jackass and let her pay for the gaming system and a couple laptops. Weiss already had her personal set of luxury electronics, so Yang got the second laptop for Pyrrha.
Jaune chuckled when she scolded him, relenting to her request and letting her purchase those items. He held the laptop under his right arm, his left shoulder hefting the T.V.
He had to duck under the doorway as they left. Yang carried the laptops in a bag and the console under her right arm, unperturbed at his casual display of arrogant manliness.
Jaune ended up breaking into chuckles. "I remember as a kid that I'd believe I'd impress all the girls by carrying things like I am now. When you end up with a partner like you however, who could probably lift a small car due to her powers, seems even more stupid."
Yang smirked at him and shrugged, no effort being put into carrying the items he was mentioning. she nodded towards him and hummed a bit. "I remember being unimpressed when kids lifted four chairs at the same time. It kinda seemed stupid too, but maybe that just..nevermind. I'd rather not bring up unpleasant memories."
Jaune was very confused and was about to ask before Williams wisdom shut him the fuck up. He clamped his mouth shut and nodded, letting it be. Jaune felt retarded that he wouldnt have caught the message himself. It was clear that she had bad memories and a bad past, same as William, and Jaune needed to respect that.
He was growing more and more annoyed at William. He understood that his experience and knowledge were now vital for their future, and Jaune all the better man because of it, but their natures naturally conflicted. He felt sick, his hands sticky.
Flashbacks slammed into his mind, causing him to stop and drop to a knee to shake his head free of them. You want to have sticky hands? William seemed to say, even though it was literally impossible. In reality it was his own mind fucking with him, but Jaune tried to rationalize it all away. Let me show you how your hands can be stick-
He felt a shake on his shoulder, and he blinked. He looked upwards into the confused and slightly concerned visage of Yang's face. He stood, blinking away the spots in his gaze and picked up the items he had roughly set down.
Luckily nothing was broke, but Yang spoke up. "What was that, Hotshot?" She seemed more confused than anything else. She didn't really know him to be too concerned but she did care enough for the teammate that ended up falling in that chasm.
The veteran inside Jaune's cleared the boy's mind, flushing the memories away with practiced ease. He breathed out slowly and opened his eyes, adjusting the packages in his arms and nodding slowly.
"I don't know what that was. I'll be fine. Probably because I haven't been drinking enough water." Yang seemed to hum, but nodded at him. She didn't entirely believe him but she also didn't want to push.
It didn't take long for them to reach their dorm. Jaune entered the hovel by swinging around into the door and leveling the T.V. at Weiss.
He had set down the other bag, holding the T.V. like he would a cannon. He made machine gun sounds, moving to the left as Yang came in behind him with two controllers daul wielded like pistols.
Pyrrha snickered, covering her mouth with a dainty hand, before rolling over and off her bed. She came up with her scroll, and aimed it at Jaune.
She "fired" the scroll, causing Jaune to dramatically hold his heart and slink down to the floor. Weiss was confused and somewhat angry, looking down at Jaune who was half leaning on her bed.
Yang ran over, collapsing to her knees and moaning at the ceiling. Pyrrha giggled before trying to put on a serious face, standing and padding slowly over to Yang.
She held the scroll to her head, standing like she was gonna execute the yellow haired girl. Yang turned to her, fake tears in her eyes. "Pull the trigger. You are only killing a man."
Pyrrha solemnly nodded, trying- and failing spectacularly- to make the sound of a gunshot. It came out like a pathetic whoopie cushion, but to her credit she jolted the scroll back like she actually fired it.
Yang collapsed dramatically over Jaune and on Weiss' bed, who took the situation with a grain of salt and was rubbing her exasperated face with a palm.
Jaune held in his laughs, a finger raised before being pointed at Pyrrha. "I'm going to put whatever sound you just made on hold in favor of teasing Yang."
He pushed her off of him and stood, stepping over Yang and lifting the T.V. He nudged her with his foot, a deadpan and raised eyebrow at her smirking from.
"'Only killing a man'? Really? I can clearly see you are a woman." Yang shrugged before grinning widely, latching onto something that Jaune said. Her arms crossed under her breasts, subsequently perking them up a bit.
"Oh? And what gave you the impression that I was, as you just said, a woman?" Jaune rolled his eyes and stepped over her, moving his body to the side as Weiss passed by to grab the items left outside the dorm. Pyrrha returned to her bed, a silly smile and a weird expression on her face. Jaune had the impression that she was heavily satisfied for a reason she probably wouldn't share anytime soon.
Jaune ignored Yang's further teasing and Weiss' indignant scolding in favor of setting down the T.V. and unboxing it. He cracked his neck and stood, assembling it's stand with one hand before setting it down on the dresser under the window.
He wired it up and took the gaming system that Yang offered to him, hooking that up as well. He turned it all on and passed it off to Yang so she could set up the gaming system with her account first.
Pyrrha taped his shoulder, her new laptop under an arm. Jaune turned and rose an eyebrow, his expression reading as an offer to continue. She did so. "Forgive me for asking, I do wish not to be a bother, but I had left my own system at home along with most of my electronics due to..irrelevant reasons. I'm unfamiliar with the brand of this one, I've always used their competitors software. Would you mind helping me set this up?"
Pyrrha studied the man in front of her after asking her inquiry. That was a half lie, she knew perfectly well how to operate the device under her left arm. She still wanted to get a feel for his leadership skills regardless, and the opportunity simply presented itself.
To her surprise, Jaune frowned and shook his head. "You aren't a bother. Let's get that straight if nothing else. As for helping you? I'll see what I can do to guide you."
He moved to sit on the floor, before she shook his head and motioned to her bed. Pyrrha lead by example and sat down herself, scooting back a bit before opening the device on her lap.
Jaune sighed softly and sat next to her, his visage seeming to be conflicted. 'He's had that look the entire time I've known him. What's so significant of a problem that he's been fighting mentally over it the entire time for probably longer than I've known him?'
When Pyrrha came back to her thoughts, Jaune was patiently leading her through setting up her account. He was a decent teacher, though his tolerance needed improvement, not to mention the fact he didn't seem invested in what she needed help with.
Jaune was an enigma to the Champion. One she put effort to deciphering as she half listened to Jaune lead her through the start up process.
His movements and gestures were graceful. Even she could see the quiet expertise as he walked. Unconcious, most likely, as he was also somewhat clumsy in truth. Which was odd. Either he walked with an aura of subdued confidence and absolute assurance in his presence, or he was a bumbling idiot who's only good merit was that he knew what not to say.
And it didn't bleed together. She'd call it bipolar but even she could sense that it wasn't that. His aura itself seemed unsteady. Volatile.
And even his personality. He was kind, of that she had no doubt. He was also observant, but that conflicted with the naivety he also often shows.
She was shook out of her thoughts by Jaune gently shaking her shoulder. "You are kinda staring at me, Pyrrha. Like I know I'm hot but I want to hurry up and get this done so I can take a shower."
Pyrrha didn't blush in favor of deciphering a load of information that he presented to her in that one message. She idly nodded along and finished setting the laptop up before setting it under her bed. True to his word, Jaune took some clothes and headed into the bathroom to take a shower after asking everyone if they needed to use it first.
The first part of his sentence seemed that of a teenage civilian. The usage of kinda and the hesitance speaking her name. The next exuded the confidence and the easy demeanor she recongized, and the third was as if he double backed and was unsure of himself. So his response was to blame her, even if he didn't know it himself, and try to direct the attention of his "failed" attempt away and the fault on her so she'd hurry up indeed.
But she also knew his personality didn't let him be that harsh and so of course he wasn't.
Pyrrha hummed softly to herself. She concluded that Jaune was just a teenager who didn't have to wake up until now, and was just learning to balance what was socially acceptable and liked with his actual personality.
A bit shorter chapter as I want to hurry up and put this filler out so we can move on. Life happened, it's been a few weeks instead of the few days I promised to deliver on. No excuses, yet I trust you guys to understand why I sucked.I'd appreciate any reviews and criticism. As always, I hope you enjoyed the story. See ya next time.
