Nice story. Holmes said that Hopkins has a bright future ahead. I like the other inspectors' reaction similar to a family when their youngest achieves something but I feel that a little congratulation would have been nice.

Gah, too many of my reviews seem to start with either some variation of 'awww' or snickering noises. Am I just that easily touched/amused? Or are you just that consistently great? Whatever the case, I love this story like I love most of your stories. I love how you use the third-person limited, especially with things like Watson teasing Lestrade - we know it happened, and we're shown the aftermath and given the explanation, but we don't quite get to see it. It's a little bit frustrating for an eternally curious sort like me, but at the same time it adds another layer of depth to the matter, making it clear that there's a world going on outside each of these characters and we're only getting a tiny portion of it.

And I seem to have started rambling, so I'm going to go crash before it gets even worse.
